Hi, I have had 4 T5's (C70, 850, V70p1, V70p2) in the past and sold my last one a year or so ago.

Bought a BMW X5 which is great but I miss the performance. I always fancied a V70R so when I saw one the other day I had to knock on the door of the house it was parked outside and give her my number if they ever wanted to sell it. He phoned today and said he wanted to so I'm going to look around it tomorrow.

It is a V70R awd auto on a T plate with 3 local owners and just over 100k.

I wondered if anyone knew what engine it would have (i.e. ME7?), and what to look out for with regards to the 4 wheel drive system and auto box (all my last ones were manuals.)

Any advise much appreciated, thanks.

Dave

not an expert on change over dates, but would guess it would pre me7, the autobox will give it away before opening the bonnet, If it has the winter, sport and economy buttons below the gearshift it is a pre-me7 4 speed and if it just has a winter button it is a me7 5 speed adaptive auto, hope that helps

that's not totally correct adrian you got the me7 4 speed adaptive box first with a winter button in 99

You do need to be a bit careful with all but the very latest of the old shape V70r AWDs, Volvo fitted the T5 engine in the autos 'though they were badged as 'R's.

Regards, Don.

If you check on the vehicle's plate you should be able to find the engine code B5234 or B5244 followed by T then another number.

You can cross check at http://www.wothrline.com/main/main_engine_performance.htm a very useful site run by Jan Elwoth a former long term Volvo development fellow...now with Volvo AB.

Regards, Don.

When I had the T5's, I thought the "R" 's were something special. Just reading up a bit tonight and they dont all seem to be much better than a T5.
Confused now!

Sounds like fun! I thought remapping mine but read that the older 5 speed auto boxes (03 and earlier) can throw a wobbly.

ok so you had the older model with what 184bhp? when you map one of those it takes it only to the power level of a standard 04 model, so you can imagine what an 04 plate one goes like when it's mapped especially with the 6 speed box, was alot of fun

the r is just a top of the range t5 mate, same engine, auto for auto they are identical, only the manuals differ slightly, R's handle better due to concrete springs

yeah about the same, i just been to spain in it and doing 80mph on the motorway i was getting 38mpg and doing 60mpg i was getting 48mpg, i thought it was really good seeing the weight and power it had, also had a full stainless exhaust which sounded meaty and like a turbocharged v8 lol

always willing to learn some more, didn't know me7 was available with the 4 speed, as they say everyday's a school day, but it was the later ones that had 265hp as standard ??

thats why ours will be a 5 speed manual awd by next year ( me7 and all ) goodbye to autobox troubles, hello fun, powerful awd

Would you advise avoiding the auto then mate? are they problematic? Are the manuals better? Cheers

Don't know of anybody really trying with one, for fear of breaking it really ??, I've not even tried a 1/4 in our one, now I think I've missed out on trying it out properly, should have given it hell before sorn'ing it, damn missed out there, oh well fun will start again road testing the manual

horse's for course's mate, people will tell you all sort's, yes our 1999 5speed has got issues, I honestly think a flush and software upgrades could sort it, but for how long ?? I now have all the parts in place for a 5 speed awd manual conversion ( should be 6 speed but cost rules this out at present , but 6 speed will be in asap when one comes along at the right price) so I'm converting and saving future headache's, it is one fantastic car and will I'm sure be improved with this mod as with the necessary re-map to get around the software issues she should then have 330+ bhp

Well , I didnt get it. Was lovely in black with anthracite coloured alloys, with new brakes and toyo proxes all round - but needed a possible new alternator and had the me7 engine. It had 106k on clock and he wanted £1500 for it.

Was that a good price? I was hoping it wasnt the ME7 and didnt know if the auto would be problematic.

was it a 4 speed or 5 speed auto, me7 is fine mate, smoother and faster. just harder ansd more expensive to tune if thats what you wanted to do, 1500 anyhow is a good price for a v70r with those miles
