Looking at the do88 intercooler to throttle pipe (http://www.do88.se/en/artiklar/engine-_-tuning/pipe-kits/volvo-3/s60-_-v70n-2000-07/volvo-s60r_v70r-turbo-lower-intercooler-pipe-2003-07.html), which works out at about £160+, I thought I'd have a go at building one. I've been collecting the bits, bought cheap on fleabay, over the last few months and yesterday I had a dabble...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSC_0413_zps3f453ac1.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSC_0413_zps3f453ac1.jpg.html)

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSC_0414_zps0688c170.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSC_0414_zps0688c170.jpg.html)

I had to add a port to one end but since I have no tig welder and no welding abilities whatsoever, I concocted a more mechanical alternative...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSC_0415_zpsc98326f2.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSC_0415_zpsc98326f2.jpg.html)

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSC_0417_zps8def9e95.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSC_0417_zps8def9e95.jpg.html)

Pressure tested it to 40psi too :)

DIY industrial jubilee clips... yum yum lol.

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSC_0419_zps764516c0.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSC_0419_zps764516c0.jpg.html)

I didn't get any photos of it fitted as it was dark and I was hungry lol but it's a bloody tight fit in there. So tight in fact that it's touching the starter motor and only mm away from the rad fan. I'm contemplating redoing it all in 57mm right up to the throttle body but I'll see how this goes first.

Total cost... £40 (ish)

I'm just a cheapskate mate :) why spend nearly 200 quid when a bit of elbow grease and some pocket change will do.

The hardest bit was fitting the bloody thing.

No room for Mikalor clamps mate but the industrial jubilee clips are pretty tough.

In all honesty mate, I've not been brave enough to boost past 7psi lol, it was dark and I was tired so the thought of blowing a hose off, half way home really didn't appeal.
Throttle response is sharper tho :)

Fitting my intercooler should be a breeze.....save an industrial jubilee for it though, your right when you say you can't get a Mikalor in there.

Good job though, looks very tidy.

The elbows/bends on the OE pipe are constrictive (down to about 55mm the IC outlet is 57mm) and the concertina used to make it flexible can cause disruption in the airflow. The new one should allow a cleaner flow with no restrictions :)

And it looks the dogs doo-dahs too :)

M-R-P
Friday 18th October 2013, 19:29
to be honest, this is an easy mod that any half competent spanner monkey can do but I'd strongly suggest using 57mm right to the throttle elbow and using a 57mm to 76mm elbow to finish. there's. not a lot of room in there lol.

Very nice Martin. I'm planning on making myself a maf to turbo pipe soon. I refuse to pay £150 like I've seen them.

they're a bit more complicated, that's why I was happy to pay 50 quid for a 2nd hand one. you need to fit 4 ports and one is for the ptc nipple (which I binned and just put the pipe straight on)

Well, after a few short blasts over the weekend, I can say that the throttle response has improved considerably - whips your head back when you blip the throttle. The grumble from the exhaust had changed a little and the spoolup noise from the front is clearer and louder. Downshifting for corners is also more precise too which is fun :D
