View Full Version : D5 Turbo replacement cost?

Well, after much diagnosing and messing around it looks like my turbo is gunked up.

Does anyone have an idea how much I`m looking at to refurb/replace the turbo on a 2002 EU3 S60 D5?

No errors on dash or relevant codes stored on the car, just intermittent restricted performance under load.
Oddly, no apparent smoke or noise from the turbo etc.
Nothing else obvious that could cause this, as far as I`m aware, without throwing error codes in the ECU or a warning on the dash.
Dice/Vida at a friends shows nothing at all that could account for the problem.
Been perfect for over 3 weeks now, then started to "hold back" when accelerating up a steep hill last night, kept my foot in it and it seemed to "cough" and clear itself. Been driving fine ever since.

I suspect I`m looking at £600 plus for a recon turbo but I`d like to hear your experiences.

Cheers.

Check the boost solenoid first, could be leaking a bit. Or maybe the waste gate flutters a bit. Try the cheaper bits first.
Or an air leak downstream from the turbo.

I have a good used one if you get stuck mate

Thanks guys.
Faulty boost solenoid would give an error code though, wouldn't it?

Most of the turbo pipework has been renewed, particularly the large pipe that's prone to collapsing. New intercooler too. Cheers for the suggestions Marc.

Thanks a lot Andy, might be interested as I'm just stuck as to what to do next, the lack of codes is throwing me and, as we all know, throwing parts at these things can get expensive!
Could you PM me a price Andy? Much appreciated.

A faulty BCS would throw a code, a tired one wouldn't. For the money I'd try changing it first.

Aren't intercoolers more typically the culprit than turbos on these?

EDIT D'oh, just seen you've swapped that already :)

Thanks very much for the advice guys, I`ll have a good read through the links provided and will try the BCS first.
The lack or relevant codes has thrown me a bit but it`s worth trying the cheaper stuff first.

Thank God for VPC, this place is awesome :)

I`ll post back with the results when I`ve changed the BCS and hopefully that`ll sort it.

One last question, would a faulty BCS still cause this issue with the engine vacuum mounts blanked off?
I ask because blanking the mounts off did not resolve the issue when I tried it a few weeks ago.
They are now reconnected.

And, just to clarify, the car does not smoke at all, even in limp mode or when giving it a bootfull.
Just a small puff of grey smoke on startup

Thanks.

Quick update, got a new BCS and the sodding bolts holding it to the block are seized/cold welded in.
Leaving them soaked in penetrating fluid overnight see if they'll play nice tomorrow...

New BCS fitted and, first time out, after about 20 miles sodding limp mode again, same as before.
Also managed to snap the top off the dipstick whilst swapping the BCS so has to go and get one of those.

Whilst at the dealers I may have agreed to buy a 2005 V70 D5 SE and I might have just chucked the S60 in for part ex.
Oops!

I'll find out tomorrow if it's going ahead.

HaHa, problem now irrelevant as I`ve pulled the trigger on the V70.

Happy days.
Cheers for the advice guys.

Lol.
Pics to follow as I didn`t take any when viewing the car.

It looks a peach though, 2006 V70 2.4D (163) SE in Barents Blue with the options list thrown at it.
Full main dealer S/Hist 1 owner from new, 84000 miles and the dealer will do a full service, fresh MOT and do the belts/tensioners etc before I take delivery on Wednesday or Thursday.
They are also fixing a couple of minor dents/scratches before I pick it up.
Will post pics when I get it home.

The only thing I didn`t check was whether it has the Aux in audio connector in the centre armrest, I suspect not as that seems to be on 2007> facelift cars so it will be getting a GROM unit fitted as soon a possible.
It has the upgraded dolby pro-logic stereo, listed as the 9 speaker one in the specs.

Only downside is that the exhaust looks a little rough and a tad rusty compared to mine, but the rest of the underside looks mint.

Just hoping it won`t be the "problem child" my S60 D5 was, fingers crossed.

When I have a shopping accident I do it properly.

Yep, expensive way of saving £600 but hey, you`ve got to draw a line somewhere.
I`ll post pics next week when I`ve got her home and cleaned/polished it.

It`ll come to me valeted but I need to clean/go over it myself before it`ll feel like mine.

Thanks again to AndyB for the stonking offer of the turbo, very much appreciated.

Gotta love this place :)

If anyone's interested in a cheap BCS, brand new, boxed, fitted once and removed please feel free to pm me an offer...

Also not sure how to upload photos on here either, do I need something like photobucket or can I upload from my computer?

I had the same issue on my 2005 model, it turned out to be sticky VNT vains and the turbo was replaced ;)
Mine threw up "engine service required" when it went into limp mode

Good luck with the new motor
