View Full Version : Front bumper respray... and then a few extras...

Been gathering the bits for a few weeks now and this weekend, the wife and little'un are away to the mice will play lol.

I'll start it as a bit of a "how to" as bumper removal was something I never fancied and I know a few members have been wondering.

1. remove all the rivets where the bomper meets the slam panel...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0486_zps1ede2bb9.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0486_zps1ede2bb9.jpg.html)

2. Headlight wipers (if you have them) - undo the 8mm nut but leave it at the end of the shaft and squeeze the wiper arm off using pliers against the nut...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0493_zps4b1cbeaa.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0493_zps4b1cbeaa.jpg.html)

3. In both wheelarches you'll find the retaining screws for the sides of the bumper, undo the T25 torx screw 4 or 5 turns but don't remove it, then push it in.

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0489_zps5827b9a6.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0489_zps5827b9a6.jpg.html)

4. Pull the bumper sides away from the car by pushing towards the front of the car and pulling outward...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0495_zpsd9c64c32.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0495_zpsd9c64c32.jpg.html)

5. Prize the bumper trims off, they don't put up much of a fight...
Underneath, you'll find a bolt (I think it's 15mm head) on each side. remove them.

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0490_zps04174649.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0490_zps04174649.jpg.html)

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0494_zpsc1e8e09c.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0494_zpsc1e8e09c.jpg.html)

The bumper will now roll forward and drop off. Make sure you disconnect your foglights before you walk off with the bumper lol.

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0496_zpscfd87780.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0496_zpscfd87780.jpg.html)

Now... Anybody remember 2 years ago, when I did my PCV, I was moaning about a torx key vanishing into the depths of the bumper? Look waht I found lol...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0498_zps0bd7e12d.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0498_zps0bd7e12d.jpg.html)

So... on with the prep work...

The bumper is a sort of sandwich affair so separating the two bits was first on the list...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0499_zps395e62d8.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0499_zps395e62d8.jpg.html)

A good opportunity to spray the lower grill black without risk of getting it on the white bits.

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0503_zpsf8766ff5.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0503_zpsf8766ff5.jpg.html)

Time to test fit a little something...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0502_zpscdd5aeb2.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0502_zpscdd5aeb2.jpg.html)

Some masking, filling and sanding...

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/DSCF0505_zps4f28b664.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/DSCF0505_zps4f28b664.jpg.html)

While that was drying, I slapped a little something on the car... can you spot them?

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Snapbucket/IMG-20130921-WA0010_zps49aab8cf.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/martinrpeachey/media/Snapbucket/IMG-20130921-WA0010_zps49aab8cf.jpg.html)

I've seen the standard espace splitter used a few times on 850s, Mongo has one. Looks nice.

Where the P2 has a sloping front end, i needed something deeper. Cost me a fiver and needed some trimming but went well I think. :D

Needs some canards on the front bumper, a carbon sheet splitter under the french bit, complete with little struts & some phat compomotive mo5's for the 90's dtm look I reckon. Lol
I've seen a tidy ex plod up by my caravan. Owned by some polish lad according to my Volvo loving chip shop owner.

The number plate is held on with posh screws that require a special too to remove - a tool which I have lost.
I was in a rush to put the car back together as I had to be at work by 12:00, so the overspray and middle bumper trim will be dealt with soon.
Tigerseal costs money - Araldyte is something I have a lot of ;)

Or more double sided sticky tape :)
That stuff didn't hold up while the car was stationary lol.

Aah, the Volvo parts pimp, hard at work lmao. When there's some aftermarket headlights that don't look bloody awful, I'll consider it. Until then, I'm keeping an eye out for the facelift projectors in my local scrappy ;)

I think the standard lights on the facelift P2 look much better and would suit my car perfectly :)

There's no room under the bonnet of the starlet for something that big (it's nearly a foot round lol).

I'm tempted to carbon wrap it and fit it on the Sweed...

I'd tolerate those lights as it wouldn't be such a wiring nightmare :)

Now that the front's pretty much sorted, I'm left with the dilemma of what to do with the rear bumper. It's dented, hanging about 10mm low in places and in need of a respray. I wonder what sort of trim/lip etc I could throw at it...?

Any ideas peeps?
