View Full Version : Swap out 2.3 engine for 2.4 t5 and gear box. What's needed?

What's needed to do this mod if at all possible with all the coding on the vehicle. Obviously the 2.4 ecu but will that just plug and play? Gear box to. Mate put the focus st 09 box in his automatic and worked. What's needed just to do the hear box? How say the facelift 6 speed box. And electronics re traction control or will old system work for that part?

My thought process here is this. I've got to upgrade the rod which alone will cost me £300 plus the head flow and all gaskets. So thinking wouldn't cost much more to swap out the engine as the 2.4 doesn't need the rods upgrading thus no need pull engine bits. Gear box could be done at same time was thinking

use the 2.4 bottom end with your current cylinder head then no need for blanking the vvt, the 2.4 ECU will be off no use too you as its coded to the car and is designed to run ME7 software ie electronic throttle

The 2.3 in a S60 is ME7 mate.

regardless off that fact the ECU is still off no use unless its cloned too the new car, ie immobiliser codes moved from 1 ECU too the other. Does the 2.3 have twin vvt??

Love the forum. I never even thought about changing the bottom end only. Top idea. So get the bigger bore and stronger rods with no issues with the head playing up. This will work ok will it? Is there much difference in head flow between the two units. Was quite £500 to have the head flowed and ported. Is it worth it?

on the 2.3 id be worth the porting heads.
done a bottom end swap on my old 3.0 vec lol

they use the same bore. You just need the 93mm crank, short skirt pistons & 143mm con-rods

Will the pistons fit into my bottom end lump? Will they not be over sized to fit into the 2.3 bore? Or u saying the 2. 4 has the same bore as the 2.3?thought that was the bore size? Lol I no nothing about engines, ££££ lol

the 2.3 uses a 81mm bore x 90mm stroke, the 2.4 uses a 81mm bore x 93mm stroke (although they did do 83mm bore x 90mm bore, but thats weaker)

displacement will be calculated from bore and stroke

81mm x 90mm = 2318.9cc
81mm x 93mm = 2396.2cc
83mm x 90mm = 2434.8cc
83mm x 93mm = 2516.0cc

That makes better sense. Right so just need get the internals from a 2.4 bottom end and job done. Might work out cheaper then forge rods. Think they were £300 plus. I'll b able to install the 19t then without the worries of bent rods

Is the gear box a simple straight fix? Plug and play or do I need extra stuff?

83mm bore in the R then which explains why they suffer from split liners?

yep, back in the 90's when Volvo were developing the 850 T-5 they experimented with a HPT 2.5 but dropped the idea because of the thin cylinder wall & went for the 2319cc. They should of stuck to there guns lol

Post 2002 bottom ends are much stronger than the earlier cars any way. Mine boosted to 22 psi @ 2200 rpm and didn't bend anything. Are you sure you need to do the engine swap at all? The 2.3 lump can make big power too.

Depends what boost & how aggressive you have it. I've known people bend rods with a 15g, yet I used my 19t for a couple of years with no issues

Might just stick it on and try. I know Ben from shark is a bit twitchy about doing the map with the weaker rods.

I would of thought so, to fit one in a ph1 it fits on the same front mountings but we have to make a custom rear. I'm pretty sure the ford mountings were based on the ph2 platform. Then obviously clutch & a linkage making I would imagine unless you could get a ph2 6 speed linkage.
Least it'll be as fast as it looks. Lol ;)

Mate I've driven t5 police cars for the last 10 years. We hammer them. Out of 30 cops on my unit only a few didn't. Speed humps at 60 plus, red lining all the time. Forgetting to do the oil checks which has caused a few to go off the road with seized engines. Don't get me wrong Not all are bad. Motorway cars are the best to go for. We have about 8 t5's left in our fleet now which are only there cause the engines are knackered so font get driven thus mileage too low to get rid. Interiors get messed up with the guns and cuff marking the trim. I was going to get one really cheap which was my main car I used but then the garages put me off saying it started to smoke and throwing codes up. That 07 one does look nice though. Better car then mine? Not really. Would need to swap out interior paint different colour as ££££s would know it was ex police.

The turbo isn't as good mate. To be far we had more issues with the facelift cars then mine at work. They were always going in the garage which is why we have bmw's now. I know what u mean re power potential but my main reason for the project is to learn about cars. Spraying, swapping out interior, upgrading f breaks and drive train. Just got a hunger to learn mate and see what I can get out of this car. I got the car for 2k 5 years a go with a £1700 lpg conversion on. Only want the power now and again. Most of the time I'm running round in it on gas. So really cheap to run. To get that facelift I'd need to put gas kit on first off that 2k spent. Then intercooler and all engine mods then interior then body skirts and exhaust just to get an extra 20 to 30bhp with a stage 3 map. Learnt loads doing this project.

youve put loads of work into your motor trying to make it a facelift but why not just buy a 2.4 t5 if thats what you want. no matter what you do to yours your never going to be happy and youll always be chasing your tail. theres not many about but im sure if you keep searching youll find one. i understand what you mean about explod. i wouldnt have one either. to any risks and you say they get bettered to hell

Don't think I'd be happy with the facelift either mate. Human nature we always want more! So no point really in getting facelift when I've come this far. Only got to look on here and those with the facelift or R are still wanting more bhp lop.

Even them guys want more power lol. That's just the way we are wired. We always crave for more power. I just want a nice interior to look at and a good bit of power as and when I need it. We drive the new BMW 335d and 330d at work now and I'm amazed how fast they are. 5.3 seconds to 60. 8 speed paddle shift box. They do a map for them which allow the car to keep up with a m3.
