Did a job on one of these yesterday, it had 26000 miles from new and understandably it was like new. They are built to last and are a proper luxury barge. The owner paid £1000 for his 1996 960 6cyl SE !!

Why do that when you could buy a red block already fitted?

Speaking from experience, I had a 2.5 960 and it was god awful, the build quality was fine, generaly it was a nice car but the fuel economy was worse than a T5 and it was so slow... That said if you get a 3.0 the power should be a bit better as they're nigh on 200bhp, dont know what the fuel economy's like though. Not really a car for modding unless you have deep pockets as there are little to no tuning parts available.

As I said when I had mine bud I neve really cared for the older Volvo's the 960's about as far back as I'd want to go, even that is borderline as it shares a lot of parts with the 940.

Fantastic cars... I've had a couple now.

Thirsty as hell for the power they produce, but they are an excellent luxo-barge for pennys really!!

Why not go the other way and drop a D24 in from a 940 like some crazy barsteward I know and crank up the fuel/boost/James Bond smoke-screen!! ;)
They do make a lovely growl!! :D

its been suggested before a few time about putting in a t5 into a 940. seems pointless to me when the redblock will handle 400bhp.

i wouldn't bother with a 960, just get a 2.3 red block.

my 940 has 247000 on the clock and is going well. its been running 100bhp more than standard for the last 6,000 or so and has been fine. its in really good condition with all the extra and cost £350.

Very good point Frankie.

I believe Antz's 240 T5 project is still ongoing, although slowly. He's been pretty quiet recently.

Unless you have owned or driven a 960 in anger with 6 pots on heat 204bhp you have NO idea. Why do you think i am 960kg and not V70kg

I had one for 5yrs in standard form and superb bags of torque as low as you would want it a very powerful great sounding 6 cylinder, no comparison to my V70 T5 with a remap!

I suppose its a personal preference, as the only 6 pots i'v heard that sound better than t5 engines are the bmw M straight 6's.

Turboed 6 pots sound the best with a manual box .but I still say my 940 sounded nice when the turbo started to come in and on full boost very addictive .and it will sound even better soon you will see .

personnally, i find most turbo'd cars sound the same, thats why the 5 pots are so good as they have a unique sound. For me you can't beat a a nice big V8........preferably supercharged.........or maybe a v10 lol

Very true but you can tune the exhaust and manifolds to change the sound of a car .mine will sound completely different now with its manifold .

I do agree Frankie that the t5's sound good, but to me speed is more important than sound. If you get left behind you can only hear the sound of loosing!
