View Full Version : Bonelorry's 854 T5-R, Manual, Creme "Gul" Yellow project...

Well here is where it starts, As some of you I have been on the hunt for an 850R or 850 T5-R saloon with Manual gearbox on and off for quite a few years now and sadly I have never been successful. Having owned a four previous Volvo's between 2007 and 2010 in the order of V70 T5, 854 T5, S70R and 855R it would be now 2013 when I finally got to own the car I have always lusted after!

Ofcourse I have seen examples pop up from time to time but I have very high standards and sadly as we all know there are not many cherished examples out there in the Volvo world, After selling my Golf Edition 30 in May I decided to have another hunt and began looking in the usual places. I actually spotted this car on the Autotrader website and although it was very heavily priced it was local to me so thought I would have a chat with the seller and pop over for a look.

I did not expect too much but upon arrival I was blown away with the cars condition, The car looked amazing and even after inspecting it with a fine tooth comb I struggled to find any faults with the car. After a test drive and a look through the massive file full of invoices in which there even was the original press release paperwork and brochure for the T5-R and service history, I made an offer which he accepted and the rest is history.

The seller is a proper Volvo nut and although he does not go on any of the owners forums certainly knows his stuff! He bought the car in 2008 from London and said the car was enthusiast owned by the previous owner also. The car has covered a mere 9k miles in his ownership, He only ever used the car during the summer months for local shows and occasionally went to Germany in the car.

In his ownership he has only run the car on V-Power, The car has had a full suspension overhaul, Dampers, Top mounts, Wishbones, Droplinks etc. The standard 15G turbo has been rebuilt by A.R turbo's, The car has had new front Discs & Pads and new rear pads in the last 200 Miles, He has changed the oil and other service items annually regardless of mileage, The timing belt was replaced in 2010 less than 6K miles ago and equally as importantly to me has kept the exterior and interior of the car in what I can only describe as mint condition also.

So as you can imagine the car drives very well and certainly does not feel like an 18 year old car to drive, A very rare find these days and I just had to buy it as IMO it was a once in a lifetime chance and something I am very proud to own! As you know the car will want for nothing in my ownership.

Heres the current spec of the car...

Spec:

Dec 1994 Volvo 850 T5-R, Standard M56 Manual Gearbox, Standard B5234T5 engine with rebuilt 15G turbo, Currently on 104K miles with FSH.

Exterior:

Standard T5-R bodykit, Creme Yellow in colour, Volvo Mudflaps and headlight protectors.

Interior:

Standard T5-R interior, Half leather half alacantara seats, Walnut dash surround with matching gearknob and alacantara gearbag, T5-R floowmats in unmarked condition with genuine Volvo rubber overmats.

Wheels & Tyres:

Standard T5-R 17" x 7j Titans with matching spare, All 5 Refurbished in Anthracite with Pirelli P-Zero Asymmetric Tyres in 205/45R17 88W Fitment allround.

Suspension:

Stock T5-R suspension, Boge shock absorbers, Kalmar Union front strut brace.

In car entrainment:

Kenwood CD head unit with IPOD connection, Factory Volvo alarm and additional CAT 1 alarm/immobiliser.

Future Plans:

Keep the car as O.E and clean as possible, I want to paint all the brake calipers and dics guards/bells black just to freshen them up. The car will be receiving full Stage 0 very soon including a PCV change and new BCS/Vac lines etc.

A few select but subtle modifications are a must IMO just to finish the car off....I will be carrying out the 302mm front brake upgrade, Fitting braided hoses and changing the brake fluid in favour of some decent DOT 5.1 fluid. I have toyed with the idea of replacing the exhaust, The car is on the original exhaust system with a very 1990's looked DTM style tailpipe. Not sure whether to go Cat-Back or Turbo back yet we shall see. Possibly a stage one map MTE or the likes but I am not wanting to going any further with regards to tuning it is not why I bought the car.

We shall see how it goes!

Pictures:

Here a few a pictures from today's 5 hour cleaning session, It was the 1st time I have washed the car so did the car in usual Bonelorry fashion...

: Rinsed the car and wheel arches thoroughly
: Washed the car using 2 bucket method with a Lambswool mitt and Meguires ultimate shampoo, One panel at a time working from top down
: Washed the wheels, Tyres and wheel arches using a Meguires Microfibre Mitt, Soft wheel brush and bottle container with foaming head containing Megs APC to a high concentrate
: Rinsed the car again
: Dryed the whole car with an Elite XL drying towel, Dryed the wheels, Door shuts and engine bay with a Microfibre cloth
: Removed any tar specs using Autoglym Intensive Tar remover
: Dressed the tyres, Bump strips and other plastics/textured parts with Meguires Endurance Tyre Gel
: Cleaned the glass inside and out using Autoglym Fast Glass
: Polished the glass inside and out using Autoglym Glass polish

Skipped the polishing and waxing stage as the previous owner has done a fine job in the dept and there is plenty of protection on the paint at the moment I was getting lots of beading today and there is plenty of depth to the paint, At some stage I will be stripping the wax off and applying a few layers of Collinites No:845 wax.

Here goes...

A few have mentioned the badges and I might well replace them and put in their original locations but it is certainly not on my list of priority's...It really does not detract from the cars condition.

If originality was the key I would be binning the Kenwood head unit, front strut brace, Tailpipes and would keep the 280mm front brakes in a bid to keep the car completely original....How far do you go with a car?

Thing is the car is my daily driver and although I am not going to go silly with regards to upgrades I still want to do subtle things to the car to make it that little bit better to drive but not ruin it! Tasteful, Purposeful and sensible upgrades, Less is more IMO and the car will not be getting ruined that is for sure.

Cheers

Well 250 miles in and nearly 2 weeks ownership and so far so good, I am currently making a list of To-Do's on the car which the majority is for my own benefit for piece of mind and others are select upgrades which I plan to do. I got hold of some 302mm front carriers with thanks to Shem so I will be fitting those soon.

I have however had to carry out my first mechanical job on the old girl but only in the form on an OSF outer C.V Boot. When I washed the car last week I noticed a small amount of C.V grease on the inside OSF alloy wheel so I got the car on the ramp the next day and sure enough the outer C.V was badly perished and had split in the middle, Luckily it was only a minor tear and not much grease was lost so I managed to do a temp repair on the boot with some heavy duty duct tape so I could use the car that day and then replaced the boot after work the day after.

The NSF boot had already been replaced so I left that alone, I went for a quality GSF supplied GKN after market boot kit as we have used these for various applications at work in the past with no issues.

On the plus side I am very happy to report that the underside of the car is in exceptional condition for its age, It has been under-sealed in the past at some point also. It was also a pleasure to work on a car that none of the bolts are seized of cross-threaded and everything has anti seizure compound applied so it shows the car has been very well maintained!

Here's a few pics of the work and a bit of a write up, Although not the most exciting job in the world I like to keep a journal of any work carried out...

Straight forward enough job, Leave the keys in the ignition so the steering lock is disabled, Jack the car up and remove the OSF wheel, Move the ABS wiring out of the way, Unbolt the brake caliper/carrier and hang out of the way on the strut with a metal wire or the likes just don't let it hang on the flexible brake hose, I opted to unbolt the strut bottom to allow the hub enough movement for the shaft to come out opposed to splitting the bottom ball joint, Undid the hubnut and pulled the hub off the shaft, Cut the steel clips off the old C.V boot, Give the C.V joint throughout wipe to remove the old grease and remove the circlip which retains the C.V joint on the driveshaft...

Old C.V boot...

Repacked with new grease and fitted the new C.V boot and new steel clips, Rebuilt everything pretty much in reverse.
The finished article..

The car is officially in my ownership as of yesterday, The private reg number is now off the car and its back on M251 TFC which I actually prefer as the cherished plate meant nothing to me.

On another note today has been an expensive one, I did question the fact that I must be mad throwing just shy of £1000 at an 18 year old car on various service/Stage 0 items and few sneaky uprated items but I wont cut corners and want to make sure everything is spot on so here goes.

The car has been very well looked after by its previous owner and over serviced but I wanted to go that extra mile and carry out full stage 0 plus carry out a few extra subtle upgrades at the same time, The Engine oil, Air filter, Gearbox oil and a Bosch Lambda sensor where replaced within the last 1000 miles so I will be leaving them alone but on the way from Parts For Volvo's and FRF Swansea with thanks to Rufe are the following items...

Genuine Mitsubishi TD04 Recirc rebuild kit, Inc New Diaphragm and spring from Japan
Genuine Distributor cap
Genuine Rotor Arm
New Bougicord HT Leads which are the same as the Genuine Volvo items
Genuine Spark Plugs
Genuine Thermostat with seal
Genuine Coolant Temp Sensor
Genuine Boost Control Solenoid, Later square style item fitted to the pre ME7 S70/V70 models
New Vacuum pipes/hoses and hose clips for the BCS, BCS to Turbo/Recirc etc
Genuine PCV Kit
Genuine Fuel Filter
Genuine Expansion Header Tank
Genuine Green Expansion Tank Cap
DO88 Black Silicone 2 x piece Hose Kit for Expansion Tank
DO88 Black Silicone 2 x piece Hose Kit for Radiator upper and lower
DO88 Black Silicon 5 piece Turbo Hose Kit
New Stainless Hose clips for radiator and turbo boost hoses
Goodridge Braided hoses for 302mm set up
Powerflex Lower Engine Tie bar Large and small bushes
Powerflex Upper Engine Mounting bush

Should keep me busy for a little while, Will be fitting the Goodridge hoses when I carry out the 302mm conversion on the front and also replacing the rear discs and pads as the discs are a bit corroded. Currently undecided on what Brand/combo of discs and pads to go for, I have though about going for Pagid but for not much more I could get Genuine items so at the moment I am opting more towards the Genuine Volvo 302mm discs with police spec pads but we shall see. The calipers and disc guards etc will be getting painted black at this time also along with some decent DOT 5.1 fluid.

Other than that, Re-underseal the car and it should not want for anything. Have to say I am tempted to fit a Cat-Back Ferrita and Stage one MTE map but we shall see. Even though the TD04 was rebuilt not that long ago I would like to double check the base boost with a Mityvac before any ECU upgrades commence as a matter of course.

All good fun, I will keep the thread updated as and when I start fitting the parts.

Cheers Simon

Had a nice little package arrived today from Rufe so going to make a bit of progress tomorrow night after work and getting the first few jobs off the expanding list LOL....

Fitting a new later style square BCS from the S70/V70 along with new vac pipes from the BCS to turbo and from the CBV to the inlet
Fitting a new complete PCV system, Cleaning the PTC nipple in the inlet pipe

I will be disconnecting the battery also to reset the ECU.

Expecting my other package from Parts For Volvo's later this week as they are awaiting the arrival of the Silicone hoses from Sweden.

Will update my findings tomorrow, Expecting to find quite a few perished and split 18 year old hoses on the PCV if past experience is anything to go by on these cars.

Thanks for all the kind words, Means a lot and makes all the effort worthwhile!

Managed to get a few jobs crossed off the list last night and carried out the PCV change, FItted the new BCS and vac pipes. Not a bad job and took us about 2 and a half hours to complete in total. I can confirm it was a very worthwhile job to do, I do not think its ever been replaced so is 18 years old and as expected the vacuum hoses where split and literally dropped to bits BUT I was more than happy with the condition of PTC as it was spotless as was the two vent holes on the block where the catch can attaches.

This shows the car has been maintained and had regular oil changes etc

Not really a write up but thought I would share a few snaps from last night, Excuse the dirty engine bay....Not upto my standards of cleanliness yet but will be getting sorted as will the blue silicone HT leads.

Summary...

A very worthwhile job to do indeed, I know most of you guys know this but I would advise anyone who is carrying out stage 0 to factor this into it. All those little vac pipes that perish and split over time can cause major problems on a standard car never mind a re-mapped car! Get it right to start with.

I can confirm the car is considerably more responsive and part throttle is improved, The revs do not seem to be hanging between gear-changes either which was a sign of a possible vac leak.

I also had the battery disconnected to re-set the ECU, Replaced the Fuel pressure reg hose and one of the hoses from the Vac tee to the Evap system. Everything else was all OK.

Checked the Base Boost using a MItyvac and got around 2.5PSI which seems about right for a stock 15G turbo, I am sure someone will confirm this?

So moving forward I will be doing the plugs, Leads, Distributor and rotor arm over the next few days. Possibly the Boost hoses if they arrive.

Then the cooling system, Thermostat, Coolant temp sensor, Expansion tank and cap, Silicone hoses and Coolant change.

Its all happening.

Stay tuned!

Cheers Simon

Think it should be around 4psi for the 15/16's and 7psi for 18/19's.

I cant find a definitive answer for this, I did read that it was about 2psi for a 15G turbo but 4psi on the 16t straight flange on the 850r.

If it is 4psi then it is currently on the low side although its not unresponsive. I need to plumb a decent mechanical boost gauge in to see if i am getting the full 12.5psi on overboost.

Another very productive night after work last night and some more jobs off the list, Took about 3 hours in total but 45 mins of that was running the car up-to temp ensuring the fan cuts OK in and bleeding the cooling system.

New Black Silicone Upper and Lower Radiator coolant hoses
New Black Silicone Header tank Upper and Lower hoses
New Genuine Expansion Tank
New Genuine Expansion Green Tank Cap
New Genuine Thermostat
New Genuine Coolant Temp Sensor
New Stainless hose clips throughout
Coolant change using the Pink coloured 5 Year Super OAT Anti-Freeze 50/50 mix
New Genuine Fuel Filter
Nitrogen filled all the tyres

Not a bad job to do, The Thermostat bolts where fiddly especially the one next to the Fuel rail and the Lower Coolant hose was a §§§§§§ to route but other than that all went OK.

Off with the old...

All finished, Not much to see as most of the hoses are hidden. Decided to remove the heatwrap that I fitted on the upper Intercooler hose also, Think I was having a blonde moment DOH...

Onto the Coolant SAGA...

Just like to say thanks to Tingy on T5D5 for the heads up on the Super OAT Coolant, It resulted in me doing about 2 hours of research on Friday night and my findings where interesting. The H-OAT which are Hybrid OAT Coolants are OK as they contain Silicates and G-05 but the normal OAT long-life 5-Year Coolant like the one I used is Silicate free and generally contains 2-EHA which is a form of Acid that literally eats away any Silicone Seals, Gaskets or hoses over time. This is pretty well documented on various Car Forums and I even found an article from SFS Performance stating to Subaru owners that the OAT Coolant the Main Dealers where using was not compatible with their cars if they used after market Silicone hoses!

The END result and something I wish I and done in the first place was to ring Volvo yesterday morning and carry out Coolant change number 2 for this week, I am getting good at this now. Better safe than sorry so a thoroughly flushed out the cooling system through the expansion tank and then the top hose until the water ran clear then refilled the system using the Genuine Volvo Coolant 50/50 Mix....

Well all is well with the car, Just got back off my holiday abroad and stored the car at a friends for the week while I was away.

Needless to say I could not wait to get back and drive it HAHA.

Had a few hours spare today so gave the car a good clean/detail as it has not been done for a few weeks, Had a good look at the paint under the UV lighting at work and have decided that a machine polish/Paint correction to remove the swirls from the paint would be a step in the right direct so...

I had a chat with Clean-Detail who are based in South Yorkshire and are professional detailers this afternoon and have booked the car in on the 29th of August for a Minor correction/Enhancement detail with them. I have used them before earlier this year on my Golf GTI Edition 30 and the results where amazing, They usually ask to see the car first but as they did my Golf earlier this year and know how particular I am with my cars they are happy for me to just turn up.

I do all my cleaning/detailing by hand and do not own a machine polisher but even if I did I simply do not have the facilities to carry out a proper paint correction and achieve a good finish, Sure you can get quite far with polish applied by hand and patience but having a proper temperature controlled environment and proper lighting with a machine polisher, various compounds and pads you can achieve a 90-95% correction on a car with decent paint.

I do feel that its worth paying good money to get the car done, The 850 is an investment and I am intending to look after it!

Ofcourse I have done ALOT of the donkey work but they always start from scratch on every car and the full process they will be doing includes the following...

Full Jetwash Inc arches and inner wheels
28 step Citrus Pre-wash
Washed using Lambs wool mitts
PH neutral snow foam bath
Non acidic wheel cleaner
PH neutral 2 bucket method body shampoo
Iron X metal fallout removal
Tar spots removal
Full vehicle Clay bar
Paintwork and wheels pat dried using microfibre towels
Paintwork and wheels finished with hot air blower
Crevis drying using hot air
Positest paint thickness readings taken
Paintwork inspected under proper lighting
Multiple 1-6 stage machine polish using various compounds and pads to achieve best correction/swirl removal possible
50/50 photos taken
All chrome and stainless surfaces cleaned, polished and sealed
Paintwork sealed
Wheels sealed
Windows polished and sealed
Hand application on Swissvax best of show wax
Plasitcs/bump strips dressed
Tyres dressed
Door sills polished and sealed

Hopefully they will do a full write up of my car on Detailing World with before, During and after pictures. They are looking forward to getting their hands on the car as even though they do a lot of exotic and expensive machinery they have an appreciation for all cars and know how rare and how much the Volvo means to me so its in good hands.

Cheers Simon

Thought it was time to get a bit more serious with the renovation, I mentioned a while back in the thread that I had plans to fully under seal the car so today I bit the bullet and got stuck in.

Took me about 6 hours in total which included 3 hours of preparation, De-greasing, Wire brushing the subframes and wheel arches/chassis legs, Rubbing down the tank straps and Masking everything up properly before I started. I opted to use Bilt Hamber Dynax under seal which comes in a 750ml aerosol can of which I used just under 3 cans which equates to about 2 litres.

I am very happy with the outcome indeed and now the underneath of the car looks as good as the top!

I have no before's or durings as I was covered in the stuff but here are some not great quality I-Phone pics of the completed job but you get the idea...

Good thing with the stuff I used it never sets solid so is very durable and wont chip off should a stone flick up or anything.

Decided to stay behind after work today and do a few more jobs on the car, Took me a little longer than I first expected but it was a worthwhile task and I even repaired something that I already suspected broken so all good.

Fitted the following items this afternoon...

Powerflex Upper engine torque mount bush
New O.E standard rubber firewall mount, Newer uprated type
Powerflex lower torque arm/Tie rod bush the large type
Left the smaller O.E lower torque/tie rod solid donut bush
Fitted a new pair of Bosch 21" wipers both with spoilers because I am anal

Not a bad job to do overall, The firewall mount bush was split in half and I suspected this as I was getting a bit of movement from the engine when I was shutting off the throttle, This issue has now completely gone which I am very happy with and the new O.E bush I have fitted is the uprated item about twice the size of the original. The upper engine torque mounting was a PITA to get out but luckily for me I had the use of an Air chisel so I was able to do it in SITU without the need for a hacksaw, The replacement Powerflex item was a snug fit on the non tapered drivers side of the housing so I used my initiative and trimmed a little off to make a slight taper on the bush and it went in with a G-Clamp and plenty of Copperslip. I had to do a bit of fiddling to get the cage back over the larger Powerflex bush, In the end I fitted the cage over the Powerflex bush first and left the bolt out of the firewall bush to give me some movement.

As for the lower Torque tie rod, All the bolts where seized so it was a case of a bit at a time and working it with Pen oil but it came undone. I pressed out the larger bush of the two using our press and fitted the Powerflex item by hand and yet again the original one was split so was in need of replacing, As for the smaller of the two this looked in good order and as it was solid donut type bush I would have gained nothing by fitting the Powerflex item so I left this one alone. All the threads where cleaned up on the bolts using our bench wire brush cleaner and again plenty of Copperslip was applied before I reassembled it all.

I also gave the scuttle panel a good clean out since I had the wiper arms off etc, My car does not have a cabin filter so I might look into getting the adaptor to allow fitment of one in the future.

Pretty chuffed I managed to cure the issue that was the split firewall bush, I am now noticing quite a bit more noise/vibration since fitting the new bushes but I read a while back this is the case. Not excessive but noticeable, Quite audible now.....Almost enhanced 5-pot goodness.

The pile of parts I bought have dwindled away and are nearly all fitted now, The car keeps getting better each time which I am please about.

Thanks for looking.

Cheers Simon

Nice weather and some spare time so I thought it was time to have a bit of a detailing session on the Gul, Although I clean the car weekly I have not been able to do the full works for quite a while as I have been busy doing all the mechanical jobs on the car and undersealing it also in my spare time.

Prob spent around 6.5 hours in total today including a few cuppas and a bacon buttie.

Following process I used today...

Rinsed the car and wheel arches thoroughly
Washed the car using 2 bucket method with a Lambswool mitt and Meguires ultimate shampoo
Washed the wheels, Tyres and wheel arches using a Meguires Microfibre Mitt, Soft wheel brush and bottle container with foaming head containing Megs soap to a high concentrate
Rinsed the car again
Dryed the whole car with Elite XL drying towel, Dried the wheels, Door shuts and engine bay with Microfibre towel.
Cleaned the glass with Autoglym fast glass then Autoglym Glass Polish
Removed any tar specs using Autoglym Intensive Tar remover
Polished the car using Autoglym Super Resin Polish using a sponge applicator to apply and microfibre towel to remove
Waxed the car using Collinites No:845 liquid insulator wax using soft applicator and Elite buffing towel to remove
Wax the wheels with Collinites No:476 wax using different applicator and microfibre cloth to remove
Dressed the bumper tops and mudflaps with Autoglym bumper care using an applicator and then buffed with a Microfibre cloth
Polished the tailpipes with Autosol
Final spritz over with Megs Quick detailer

The car is in on the 29th for a professional paint correction/machine polish to further enhance the depth and clarity of the paint....And to remove the minor swirls also. Hoping for a 90% correction on the swirls from past experience, Then I will paint all the calipers etc and its pretty much how I want it cosmetic wise.

Got the proper camera out today so took a few snaps of the finished article...

Sadly it did not quite go to plan as the OSR brake caliper needs replacing, The outer piston is seized but I was not surprised after all it is a 19 year old car and those ATE twin piston designed calipers where never the best of designs.

I did not even bother trying to free the piston as the seal is torn so I have ordered a new caliper which comes tomorrow morning.

Over the last few days a few last minute decisions where made regarding the brakes, In the end I opted not to fit the Goodridge Braided Hoses. Since all the flexible brake hoses have been replaced on the car by the previous owner so are virtually new along with the majority of the metal brake pipes that have been replaced with Copper ones so I left them alone.

Not sure everyone will approve but I also decided not to go for Genuine Discs and pads for no other reason than I did not think it was worth the extra £150 for the Genuine items. I have had good experience using the Pagid brake products from Euro Car Parts on a daily basis and on my Saab last year and since I have a trade account through work it made sense to go down that route. Not that money is an issue especially where the car is concerned but I paid only £100 for the front and rear discs and pads and they are of very good quality indeed.

So the car is on the ramp at work overnight until the new caliper arrives in the morning then on Saturday I will be painting all the calipers, Disc bells and disc guards Black.

Hopefully give it a quick wash ready for Sundays meeting at Grantham.

So brake wise the car has had...

New Pagid Front discs and pads with 302mm upgrade
New Pagid Rear discs and pads
New Pagid rear pad anti rattle and pin kit
New OSR brake caliper
Brake fluid change using ATE Super racing blue brake fluid

Off with the old...

New 302's up-front...

Another nice job completed, your lucky you've only need 1 caliper, I've had 3 on mine since I've had it, only got one original one left... Lol
I can see your logic regarding the brake hoses but I still think you should have opted for the braided items. In any case as I said job well done and you'll no doubt notice a nice improvement over the original ones :)

Its already had at least one of the calipers replaced on the front by the previous owner, I made the decision not to get the car mapped and to leave it as standard as possible with just a few sensible upgrades along the way.

Trouble is with the braided items is that you cant clamp them off should you need to do any further brake work in the future, Not the main reason I opted to leave the stock hoses but something else I considered.

Fact is the car never gets driven in anger at all and will never see a track day so knew that standard pads and hoses would be more than upto the job, I thought the 302's where a worthwhile uprgade and I wanted to change the brake fluid for some decent stuff for piece of mind. I do not need braided hoses or more hardcore pads so think that what I have gone for will be fine.

Thanks

Fair enough, the 280's are crap tbf even with the standard power, the 302's should have been factory fitted to these, especially when you think that Volvo marketed these as the "performance" model in the lineup. I've been happy with the performance of the 302's on mine but I'd like to upgrade to the AP's next year, although if I'm honest with myself it's probably going to be more for looks than braking performance as like you I don't do track days and don't really drive the car like a racing driver either..

Don't get me wrong, I have had the AP 340mm fronts on my old 854 T5 and they where unreal but on the T5-R it would be a step in the wrong direction.

If I went down the tuning route, Forged rods etc then I would without a doubt go for something more hardcore. Since there are very few Manual Gul Saloons left that are even worth buying these days mine just has to stay standard or as near as.

It will be going up for sale early next year so I want it to appeal to enthusiasts and I am hoping the work I have done will help the car retain its value. I am thoroughly enjoying owning the car and making my mark on it but I always planned not to keep it long term.

Cheers :)

Really!?!? You can't let another immaculate Volvo slip through your fingers in a short space of time, you've got to keep it. Not many will cherish it like you've done over this short period...

Yes this was always my plan, Buy and own the best example I could get my hands on. I am enjoying the car and enjoying improving it but the car will be pretty much what I consider finished very soon, I will use the car for a few months get it MOT'd in Jan 2013 and see how I feel at the time.

I will most likely sell it on though if I got a buyer, I never wanted to keep it long term as I have plans for building something and having a bit of a project car in the pipeline so will need the money to fund that next year.

Had another few hours on the car this afternoon finishing the brakes off, Fitted the new OSR brake caliper which turned out to be an ATE re manufactured unit but had to cut and re-flare the copper brake pipe that goes into the caliper.

The old caliper was totally goosed.

I removed the 3 bleed nipples from the other calipers and cleaned up all the threads before refitting then bled the braking system using about 1 litre of Super Blue, Adjusted the handbrake and then took the car for a quick test drive....All good.

Job for tomorrow afternoon is to get all the brakes painted up.

Another very productive afternoon today, Finished work at 12.30pm and in the 850 came into the workshop for some more finishing touches.

Very happy indeed with this afternoons work, Its all about the little details now with the car and today I did the following...

Painted all the Brake Calipers, Disc bells, Disc vents and Disc guards with Hammerite Smooth Black.
Removed all four tyres and fitted new rubber valves in the wheels
Removed all the old stick on balance weights
Nitrogen infated all the tyres
Rebalanced the wheels
Rotated the tyres front to back

Few snaps from today's activities....

Wheels off...

Removed all the old weights and then did a painstaking job off getting the old residue off each wheel...

Tyres off, New valves fitted. No worries about marking the wheels as I fit my own tyres...

Nitrogen inflation, Excuse the marks on the wheel its just tyre bead lubricant, Then re-balanced the all four wheels...

Thought I would update the thread with the cars current spec as of today as it has undergone quite a bit of work and new parts fitted over the last few months.

What turned out to be just carrying out Stage 0 ended up turning into a bit of a restoration project and an already very well looked after car has now gone up to another level. It has been a much quicker turnaround than what I initially expected but I managed to get through my list of To-Do's in just a few months.

Although its been pretty intensive and has taken up pretty much all my spare time after work and at weekends not just fitting new parts and renovation work but also detailing the car and all the little details its been worth it, I can now just enjoy the car for a while without worrying about anything.

I wont do a checklist as the list of parts I bought and fitted are found earlier in this thread...

Volvo 850 T5-R, Registered Dec 1994, Standard M56 Manual Gearbox, Currently on 105260 miles.

In car entrainment:

Kenwood CD head unit with IPOD connection, Factory Volvo alarm and additional CAT 1 alarm/immobiliser. Also have original Volvo CD/Radio head unit.

Future plans:

Apart from the car having a minor paint correction next week and carrying out an Oil & Filter change over the next few months as it was done prior to myself purchasing the car just over 1000 miles ago so is not due yet I have no plans for the car.

It is for me pretty much finished and getting the paint correction done will be the icing on the cake, It is a bit too late to start showing the car this year so I will just enjoy it and ofcourse keep it in as good condition as possible.

The car received a lot of positive comments by fellow members at the Grantham meeting on Sunday aswell as Tim Williams saying it was probably the best Yellow one he had seen aswell as having a good poke around and giving it his approval which meant alot! I was asked by a few people about the future of the car and what my plans are and my reply was....

I have done what I always set out to do, Own a Gul Yellow T5-R and hopefully make my own mark on it. I have and still are enjoying my ownership with the car but I am not in it for the long haul, The MOT is due at the end of December and I have already decided that I will be advertising/selling the car after the MOT.

I was told I am mad for even considering letting a car like this go especially with all the work I have done but that was always my plan from day one, It is a very special car, Totally unique and a car I am glad I had the chance to own.

As said it wont be for another few months yet and until the MOT has been done but I am hoping the car will go to a fellow enthusiast and a good home!

Thanks Simon

Very excited as I am dropping the car off at the detailers tomorrow and leaving it for a few days. As mentioned earlier in the thread I am wanting to have a paint correction/machine polish carried out by a professional and even though they will be giving the car a full pre-wash, wash and so on it just would not be right to drop it off dirty!

So had a few hours on the car this morning and as usual a quick wash turned into a 5 hour mini-detail LOL.

Thanks TC, Afraid the holes behind are a bit on the big side where the front bumper for the original items and so the wheel arch liner would not be a secure fitment.

There are 3 pop rivets fitted either side, I actually did four of them myself as the original items where not doing anything and the arch liner was in-secure so I drilled them out and re-fitted with rivets.

Not O.E I appreciate but still looks tidy IMO and more importantly its all secure.

Just read through the thread from start to finish. That's a lot of hard work you have put in in a short space of time. Its good to see that their are owners that are still willing to pump the money in (and hard labour) to keep these models in fine condition.
Look forward to seeing the pic's after the paint correction.

Thanks Simon, I am glad that fellow members are enjoying the thread and hopefully I am not making it too boring LOL. I am very fortunate to have the facilities and knowledge which alot I have acquired off the forums to be able to carry out the work on my car to a high standard and in such a short space of time.

I have spent around the £1300 mark on the car since June but I dread to think how much it would have cost if I was paying someone else to do it?

I have not added up the labour time I have spent on the car to date....Probably around the 35 hour mark for all the mechanical work/renovation work. At £50 per hour labour thats well over £1500!

Not that this counts but it gets at least 2 hours most weekends for a basic clean or upto 6 hours if I am doing a detail.

It adds up but its money and time well spent :) Its my only hobby and I dont drink or smoke.

I will be following this thread to see when it comes up for sale.

You are not the only one! I have had a PM on here and on UKSaabs from members already asking for first refusal on the car, Ofcourse it might come to nothing but its nice to have such appreciation for the car!

Dropped the car off at the detailer's this afternoon and will be collecting on Friday, Think he was surprised how clean it already was as when I walked him around it and discussed wax options and so on. They get a lot of far more expensive machinery dropped off in a right state believe it or not!

There is a possibility he will be doing a full write up on my car if he has the time, Fingers crossed he does and I will update the thread!

Got it back from the detailers...

So am I happy with it?

Over the moon!

Cant recommend these guys highly enough, I am very picky and like to think I keep the car clean and detailed to a very good standard but I was amazed to see the difference when I walked into the showroom area and saw the car sat there with all the lighting. The paint looks like glass with so much depth! Its as I have said before, You can achieve a decent finish at home but having the right know-how on machine polishers/pad compounds/polish compounds, Proper lighting and a temperature controlled environment to allow the waxes to cure properly makes a huge difference to the end result.

I did get complimented on the cars condition on arrival as I took the car in just after I had cleaned/Detailed it myself, He also mentioned how good my brakes looked all painted up and the quality of the under-sealing which I had done so I was very pleased with those comments. He said it was a pleasure to work on such a well looked after and rare car and that for a 19 year old car it was exceptional!

I sent him a bit of work a few months ago and have recommended quite a few people on various forums so as a thank you he has taken a load of photo's of the full detail start to finish and is going to do a full write up on Detailing World of my car, He also very kindly spent quite a bit more time on my car around 15 hours in total with no extra charge during the machine polish stage to get a near full correction and upgraded the wax from Swissvax Sheild to Swissvax Crystal Rock which is £795 per 200ml pot! Yes thats £795 LOL.

So just a few snaps of the car for now the first 2 are taken by Nick who did the work on the car and the last 3 are taken by me as I collected the car, I am awaiting the thread on Detailing World which will be much more detailed and show the different stages on the work with 50/50 shots etc Once this write up is uploaded I will put the link on here for those who would like to read it.

1AM this morning...Thats commitment! After the multiple stage machine polish and IPA wipe down...

After the refine stage, More gloss but still not waxed yet! The finishing products used where Swissvax including, Swissvax Crystal Rock wax Arguably the best wax you can buy!, Swissvax Autobahn wheel wax, Swissvax Pneu Glossy tyre dressing and Swissvax Seal feed on all the bumper tops/door bump strips aswell as the rubber window seals and rubber roof mouldings...

WOW that is nice, you must have either put a lot of work his way or have deep pockets....wax at £795 for 200ml:yikes:

The result does look good though and I for one can't wait till we get to read the full write up.

Just the one downer.....by the look of those lines on the workshop floor he wasn't quite as careful driving it as detailing it lol

HAHA, Yes I said to him when I picked the car up....I hope they are not my tyre marks!

Apparently one of the lads who knows the owners uses the workshop and carries out work on his own excessively lowered Vauxhall Astra and the marks are from his car.

Dont worry I trust Nick implicitly with my car, He gets some very expensive and exotic machinery in there but really appreciated the Gul which was nice.

Yes the detail I had done today was not cheap, I spat my drink out last night when I found out how much that wax costs! I have spent quite a bit with him this year as I have had 2 Enhancment Details done with my own cars, A lad off T5D5 also went on my recommendation and spent a few hundred pounds with them.

This eBay link may seem almost uninteresting to you Simon but look at the registration of the T-5R in the feature... Is it possible your car was originally a Volvo UK car? Would be interesting to research the previous owner history :)

No it is interesting, I was told by the chap I bought the car off that one of the dealer who sold my car when it was new had a run of number plates prefix M*** TFC.

I have seen a few Gul Yellow T5-R's on google images with this reg prefix and know of a car on VOC that came 2nd at the BKV Show for the 850 section and is owned by a chap called Alan reg no: M165 TFC which is also a T5-R Gul Saloon.

So speaking of Gul Yellow T5-R's...

Not everyday this happens...

Yesterday I was on my way to a local cash machine and just as I parked up to my amazement I spotted a Volvo 855 T5-R in Gul yellow parked at the bottom of the car park, I made eye contact with the owner who was sat in the car with his family and then we began waving at each other like a pair of nutters HAHA.

I had about 30 mins chatting with him and admiring each others cars, It turns out he does not live that far away from me and is a Professional Mobile Valeter by trade and dabbles with a bit of detailing work, His car was an Automatic which he has owned for 10 years and does not use very often these days.

Was very nice to have mine parked upto another one, His was in good condition for the year but he did say after seeing mine that he really needs to put some more time into his car.

I did have to laugh though as when he looked around mine and saw all the little details like the brakes painted, The floor mats, The underseaing, The condition of the bodywork and wheels, The engine bay he simply said...I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, ITS FU**ING MINT THIS then he made his wife get out of their car to look too much to her amusement LOL.

Gave myself a little job to do for after work on Saturday.

Although the previous owner changed the Oil & Filter annually regardless of mileage which was usually a mere 1000 per year! I have covered just over 1200 miles since buying the car in June and wanted to change it myself for piece of mind and since I have done everything else.

The car has been run on Castrol 10w40 Magnatec for the last 7 years or so whilst the previous owner had the car and since the main Volvo dealers now use Castrol for servicing I thought why not.

So I bought 8 Litres of Castrol 10w40 Magnatec A3/B4 and a Genuine Volvo filter.

Cheers Pete, The previous owner probably got the car 60% of the way there and indeed did a fine job of looking after the car.

The difference is now the car is able to be used daily and mechanically/Cosmetically wants for nothing. All the Little details have really finished the car off :)

I will have to pop over soon and have a chin-wag and let you have a look at mine, I might not have it much longer as I am thinking about getting it MOT'd early and selling it in October now.

Selling up...

Right as mentioned earlier in this thread it was always my intention to not keep the car long term and this is something I have been giving this much thought recently.

The cars MOT is not due until the end of December and this was when I originally considered selling the car but I have decided that I am going to get the car MOT'd early at some over the next few weeks with a view of selling/advertising it at the beginning of October.

I have set out what I wanted to achieve with the car and I am very happy with the level of condition the car is now at, I have taken an already good example and made it one of the best Volvo 854 T5-R's in the country.

I know and always did know that it was a one off purchase and its a car that I will probably never own again as they are becoming rarer as time goes on in any condition, Never mind good ones! I

I do however have other projects I want to pursue and have plans to have a bit of a stripped out/track toy and a cheap daily driver next year so the Volvo will have to go. I actually wanted to go down this route before I spotted the Volvo for sale but when I saw it I had to have one last fling and fulfil the need which I have always had to own a Volvo 854 T5-R in Gul Yellow with a manual gearbox!

So keep your eyes out for the For Sale thread over the next 3-4 weeks.

Cheers Simon

Shame to hear your selling up so soon Simon, but as you've said it was never going to be a long term thing. So best of luck with the sale I hope it goes to someone who will cherish it as it has been up until now and appreciate it for what it is whole and not what it could be in parts after thrashing and ruining it...

What are you after for it? PM if you'd rather not say on here just yet.

Thanks Andy,

Yes I do hope the car stays on the forums and goes to an enthusiast that will cherish and pamper the car, I will be keeping my eyes out on the forums to see its progress with the prospective new owner who ever that might be???? Ofcourse in my opinion the car is now complete and is ready to be used, I have only covered 1600 Miles since I bought the car and all the new parts have covered even less so it wants for nothing.

I do not mind disclosing the price on the forum, I am always upfront with people...

I bought this car purely because I have always wanted one and always knew it would be for non profit and more for my love of these cars.

The car was up for £6000 when I went to look at it!

In the end I paid £5000 for the car and that is the amount I will be wanting back for the car. I have spent £1500 on the car and even though I am lucky enough to have carried out all the work myself...if you where factoring labour into the equation its had probably about £1500 worth of labour charges on-top also!

So I feel that its justifiable to ask for £5000 for the car although whether perspective buyers feel this is reasonable is another question? Its not just the rarity of the car but also its condition I honestly do not think there can be many examples left as good.

The picture of yours and the estate together is brilliant. They both look so good in that colour it makes me wonder why there are so few of them around. My old man had a Vauxhall Cavalier Sports Hatch when I was young , it was a very similar colour and looked great it really stood out.

I think your asking price is both reasonable and realistic, if anything you've added to the price you paid by investing your time, efforts and attention to detail making this car more than just the rare yellow manual T-5R you originally bought. There will be 2 types of buyer interested in this car, the majority of buyers that are interested will question your price, and quite simply will not be able to afford such an example. Then there will be the minority who will welcome it's history and well kept appearance, indeed it will be these few who are after a car of this caliber . This is the class of buyer you should be interested in as they will appreciate it's rarity and pay to have such a car, it will also secure the cars future and make sure that it continues to be looked after and maintained "correctly". Again I wish you well with the sale and ask that you stay in touch as I always enjoy reading through your vehicles project threads as your attention to detail and insistence on quality make for great reading and in a way remind me of me... lol

Thanks Andy, As you said and I feel the same...I would prefer for the car to go to an enthusiast and to be honest I doubt anyone other than someone who really appreciates the car for what it is will be interested.

I was advised to put the car up for a little more than what I paid by a fellow member who has seen the car in the flesh, However I am not greedy and I am also realistic in the current climate.

There is currently a Gul 855 T5-R on ebay for £4750 which looks very average in condition and is not a patch on what my car was before I carried out all the work. Ofcourse the owner/seller is cashing in on the rarity of the car and his value is a little high in my opinion. I would hope someone looking would appreciate the quality of my car.

We shall see :)
