Hi,

Need to either replace or adjust my handbrake (cable /shoes), unfortunately i jumped out of my car for a sec left it in neutral with the handbrake on (i know i should of put it in park!) and the handbrake failed and it rolled about 10 yrds into the back of a truck (ouch!) luckily only dented the bonnet as it wedged under the rear tailgate (no broken lights or bumper) have managed to find a bonnet from my local volvo specialist brakers yard in the same colour black for £60, result not as expensive as i thought it would be. But now need to tackle why the handbrake doesn't work, i have tried adjusting from the handbrake end and all though it is tighter will still not hold the car, i think it is still attached to the rear shoes as when i pull it up i can hear a clunk in the rear discs hub.

so questions i need answering are:
1) how to i remove the disc to check the handbrake shoes.
2) how do i replace the cable (had a look underneath and can't see where it comes through from the inside)
3) is there any other adjustment i can do, or do i need to replace the shoes and cable.

Ok - first we'll need to know what car you have as the handbrakes differ between models. ;)

Ok...
Take the wheel off and look at the hub, there's a hole in it that lets you see inside. Rotate it to about 11 or 1 o' clock (can't remember which) and you'll see a plastic adjuster. You can either remove the hub by undoing the adjuster and undoing the small bolt between 2 of the wheelbolt holes, to see if there's any damage to the shoes or just tighten the adjuster to bring the shoes out a little. (make sure the handbrake is off when doing this)

Great thanks, how do you undo the adjust did see the small hole (& the bolt) in the hub last night that wasn't for the wheel bolts when i took the wheel off to try and check the cable, it's quite small prob less than 10mm would only fit a smallish screwdriver in ? do i need a special tool ?

Will have a go tonight when i get in.

No special tool needed, a flat bladed screwdriver will do. Use a torch and turn the hub till you see a sort-of sausage shaped thing with nodules sticking out. push the nodules round with the screwdriver until you can't rotate the hub, then wind it back a turn.

I would probably add to this that you should back the handbrake cable adjuster right off before you adjust the shoes especially if you have adjusted the handbrake cable in an attempt to get the handbrake working.

As Mr Banana stated.. inside the glove box you'll want to slacken off the nut that is under the cover. Once this is done then do the shoes, then tighten back up afterwards.

Or.... if your feeling lazy, just tighten up the adjuster and see if it does the job...
