Well as most of you will know I finally returned to Volvo ownership this week when I bought Sartain87's V70R, it's a manual car in silver with the dark interior. Picked the car up from Marc's in Kettering on Sunday at lunch time and then drove it the 200 odd miles home again, aside from a little pull to the right the car drove great. Once home I decided I wanted to clean the interior up a little and also do something about the leather as it had a few marks and some wear, out came the leather kit I've owned for forever. Sadly in the hurry to get it cleaned up I forgot to take any before shots but here's a couple of after shots along with a lovely view of the battered steering wheel which needs replacing.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/IMG_1345_zpsab978803.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/IMG_1345_zpsab978803.jpg.html)

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/IMG_1346_zps970f4ada.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/IMG_1346_zps970f4ada.jpg.html)

The to do list :-

Electric windows dont work
Rear wiper doesnt work
Slight pull to the right
blocked cat
Wheels BADLY need refurbing
Front and rear bumpers need re spraying, along with two splits to repair in the front bumper
Bonnet needs repainting to rectify stone chips
small patch of bubbled paint to re paint on front edge of rear wheel arch
Various bits of trim broken that need replacing/repairing.
Tailgate trim needs 'Fix' kit
Central locking on front doors intermitant
Front mudguard missing
Recirc needs re fitting
Boost guage needs moving(keeps wobbling and it's really annoying)
Headlights look very flat inside, will need replacing sooner or later.
Possible warped discs.
Handbrakes a little high.
Door straps are broken on both front doors.
Various small dents all over.

I know this looks like a rather extensive list and well to be fair it is, but a lot of this is cosmetic and I'm more than capable of repairing it myself, Marc thankfully gave me a shed load of spares to go with the car so hopefull I will be able to rectify some of the faults without having to spend any money. Plans at the moment intail repairing the esentials such as the windows, rear wiper, pull to the right, blocked cat and central locking and then the rest I will do as and when I have the funds availble. Not quite sure what to do about the wheels as they're really quite bad, the kerbing is simply shocking, I may just wait till I dont need it too much over summer and refurb them properly.

Here's a couple of pics that I took not longer after getting back but sadly before I cleaned it. After cleaning I polished off some of the black marks off the front bumper so it wont look as bad until I get time to fix it, I also removed the black strip from under the back window as it was starting to rust and was jutting out quite a bit on both ends. Also greased the rear door straps as they where making that lovely groaning noise that they do when they're dry.

At least he screwed the boost gauge to the speaker grill, he must of been a smart cookie, you just have a grill to replace, better than a dashboard.

Ordered a repair kit for the tailgate trim on Monday and I've purchased a really nice steering wheel off Niles along with some of the other missing odds and ends. Today I've pulled apart one of the spare switch packs that Marc gave me with the car, all I can say is what an overly complicated setup!, that said I'm going to see if I can make one good set out of the two, after that's done I'll commence with pulling the car apart to repair some of the faults. If the tailgate repair kit arrives tomorrow then I will attempt to repair the rear wiper.

Spent a good two hours on the car tonight trying to work out what was up with the windows, passenger front window was not quite shut and wouldn't move, took it all apart and couldn't find anything wrong with it. The motor works out of the car, the motor works in the car without the window attached, the window moves up and down ok, put the two together and ummm....nothing. I've managed to get the window shut by pushing it while pressing the button, when you press the button you can here the motor trying to move. After some playing with a couple of spare switchpacks (none of them where particularly good) I'm starting to think that either they all have the same fault or the fault lies elsewhere, the two passenger windows I can here trying to move, the two drivers side ones do nothing (other than the switch clicking when you press the drivers window). Anyone got any ideas?..or can anyone find me some of the previous owners (not Marc...obviously...I know him, lol) so I can try and work out what the hells wrong with it,it's almost like there's a voltage drop somewhere.

Oh....Also acquired a replacement steering wheel that is a quantum leap better than the old one, I'll be trying to fit that tomorrow...hopefully.

Cheers Biff..

Spent another couple of hours on the car today and actualy got a few jobs done, lol. Steering wheel is now replaced, the old one put up a valiant amount of resistance but sadly it wasn't a match for my hacksaw. I got the interior lights working again (only noticed they weren't working last night), thankfully it was nothing but a blown fuse. Drivers side front muflap has been replaced, it was missing before along with the rivets that hold it in place so the bottom of the wing could move around a little, I also noticed that none of the rivets in the wheel arches are the proper Volvo plastic ones, these will all have to be swapped out, my OCD wont allow them to stay, lol. I've removed the boost gauge, it wasn't to my taste and as it was only stuck on the dash top it was wobbling around looking cheap and boy racerish, haven't decided wether to just sell it on or keep it for checking boost issues later on. Also found today that one of the footwell lights (drivers side) was in the door pocket, upon fishing under the dash for the wiring I've found it but the positive has broken off the spade connector, have to re solder it when I get a minute. After some advice on ..Ahem...another volvo site (Volvospeed...sorry guys), I'm going to try putting twelve volts to each of the window motors to see if they're all working ok, if they are then it can only really be the drivers switch pack thats faulty...

Checked the lights, if they've been sprayed then it's on the inside as there's nothing on the lenses. While waiting for some Uni stuff to render on the pc today I thought I'd nip out and swap the rear wiper mech for the spare one that was in the box of bits that came with the car...took me all of about ten seconds to remove the rear trim from the tailgate...here's why

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/download3_zps70126240.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/download3_zps70126240.jpg.html)

Yup, it was only held in place by two wood screws...WTF?..Seriously?... After getting over that shock I pulled the old mech out to confirm my suspicion that...yep...it was seized solid...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/download2_zpsdc6b65c1.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/download2_zpsdc6b65c1.jpg.html)

After dumping that one I went to get the replacement out of the spares box...Ahhh...§§§§§§§§..... its a front wiper mech not a rear... how did I not notice that sooner?.... Never the less I carried on, I've managed to free one of these off before....I then spent the next ten minutes with a very large lump hammer, some WD40 and various other tools removing the shaft from the brace. I eventually got it out and cleaned it up, greased it and re fitted it. Once back in the car it functioned....sort of, apparently it's been seized for a long time and it's basically worn the ridges off one of the brackets in the linkage so it works, but it doesn't always park where it should. I've removed the wiper for now as I dont want it flopping around at the back looking stupid. After that fiasco I fitted the tailgate repair kit that I had bought, it went on but it just didn't really fit as well as the last one I got, not sure if it was the new clips (they seemed a bit 'chunky') or if it was the brackets?.. either way it's better than the two bloody wood screws for the time being..

Oh I bid on a set of Pegs on Ebay the other day, came so close..missed em by a tenner....Doh...oh well, the crumy Comets will have to stay on for now...

Cleaned the engine bay up a little today with some de-greaser, whoever sprayed that black oily §§§§ all over everything wants shooting, everything you touch is covered in it. I found a lead off the drivers side front wiper mech, plugged it in and the bloody washers came on and started squirting water out of a busted valve in the system...Wonder why it was disconnected?...I'll post pics tomorrow...

Cheers Andy, it only looks it though, it's bloody filthy, someone's sprayed christ knows what over anything and everything electrical and it's black and oily.

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon doing a few jobs, rear wiper now works again, sadly though the wash part of the wash wipe doesnt work, I've checked the pump and there's no noise coming from it at all so as it's definatley getting 12 volts I'd say it's dead. Pulled the drivers side headlight out while I was near the pump and while I had it off I pulled the lens off to see why they looked dark, still no idea however there's a lot of the silver paint missing off the reflector and what is there is not in good condition. Even after a good clean inside and out the light looks no different to the other one, time for new headlights I think. Oh I also noticed (while I had the headlight apart) that it's had HID's at some point and it's melted the reflector a little.Had another bash at the widows today, still sod all, tried replacing the other widow switches just in case one had a short but it had no effect at all. I also tried swapping the breaker over in the fuse box for the one for the drivers seat, sadly that did sod all as well.
While I was playing with the relays in the fuse box I noticed that part of the fusebox looks a little melted, it's not hear any of the connections so it's not been caused by over heating electricals but it makes me wonder if there's something seriously wrong with the wiring in or around the fuse box?.

Re adjusted the door catches as well today as one of the doors wasn't shutting flush, not a big job but it all add's up I suppose.

Had a little care package arrive yesterday from James (thanks bud) with some various odd's and sod's I was missing, I manged to fit a couple of the bits but I had problem with installing the 3 disc cd changer cartridge. After trying several times I just couldn't persuade it to go in, upon closer inspection I found that something had been shoved inside it!, after a little wrestling I managed to pull out a rather large bag of plastic scented beads...( I presume that this was inserted by a small child). Sadly even once I'd removed said item the cdchanger still refuses to work, think it may have broken or bent something inside, this means I now have yet another job to add to the list....FFS...

Electric windows dont work (Various switchpacks tried with no success at all)
Rear wiper doesnt work (Fixed...No Wash wipe yet though)
Slight pull to the right (Fixed...Tyre pressures sorted...Duh)
Steering wheel needs replacing (Bought and replaced)
blocked cat
Wheels BADLY need refurbing (Bought one Wheel which is being refurbed...4 more to go)
Front and rear bumpers need re spraying, along with two splits to repair in the front bumper
Both rear quarters need respraying
Boot outer grab handle needs re spraying
Bonnet needs repainting to rectify stone chips
small patch of bubbled paint to re paint on front edge of rear wheel arch
Various bits of trim broken that need replacing/repairing.
Tailgate trim needs 'Fix' kit (Fix kit bought and fitted)
Central locking on front doors intermitant
Front mudguard missing (Replaced)
Recirc needs re fitting
Boost guage needs moving(keeps wobbling and it's really annoying) (Removed)
Headlights look very flat inside, will need replacing sooner or later.
Possible warped discs.
Handbrakes a little high.
Door straps are broken on both front doors.
Various small dents all over.
3 Disc cd changer not accepting cartridge
Indicators mounting clips broken (Temporarily repaired, new set needs sourcing)
Cd Changer lid hinges in pieces (Repaired)
OS Mirror inner trim cover needs new mountings

Had a good day today, as some of you may know my compressor died the other day, a friend gave me a new but broken compressor yesterday (One of the air fittings had snapped off), when I checked it was exactly the same make and model as my old one so after a morning of swapping some parts around I have a brand new compressor!..

After such a success this morning I decided to have a look at the cabin filter as I'd noticed yesterday that there wasn't exactly a lot of air being blown through the heater even on full. To say it was filthy would be the understatement of the year, I don't think this thing has been changed in years!..

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/photo_zps57c03042.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zps57c03042.jpg.html)

I've left it off for now and the fan's much more usefull now, though I will have to order a replacement for it.

While I had the trim off under the windscreen I had a proper look at the fuse box to see if I could trace the window fault, sadly couldn't see anything wrong there. I then proceeded to remove the kick panel under the dash to examine the underside of the fusebox, still couldn't see anything wrong. I then decided that I'd checked everything else so I'd check the wiring multiplug on the door (as it was the only thing I hadn't checked)... This is what I found..

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/photo_zps7833272d.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zps7833272d.jpg.html)

Don't know about you guys but to me that just doesnt look right. Upon closer inspection there was 6 wires that where obviously not making any sort of contact as they'd been pushed back into the plastic housing. I pulled a couple of the wires but there was no way of re inserting them and having them stay in place, as a temporary fix I've hot glues all the wires that where loose to the rest of the wires that are firmly seated. Lo and behold...I HAVE WORKING WINDOWS!!!!... BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.. Really made my day this did, the only minor problem I have now is that I'm now in the land of dubious switchpacks.. the one I have now is ok but it's not brilliant, time to start saving for a new one.

On a side note, who was it that offered me a replacement drivers door in Silver?...(this one has a big dent at the bottom..and the knackered multiplug)

Looking good Tc, you're a braver man than I making a list ! Regarding your warped discs, just check to be sure that your wishbone inner bushes are okay. I chased a shudder under braking for ages on my T5, changed the front discs twice and the rears twice as well until I found out that the fault was the new wishbone bushes that I had fitted just a few months earlier ! (I'd ruled them out because they were new ffs ! ) Some poly bushes later and the shake had gone.

Tomcat

Cheers NB, I have to make lists as I have a memory like a sieve, lol. As for the brakes I'm reasonably sure it's the discs as when your coming to a stop at even slow speeds you can feel the car braking in little lurches as it comes to a stop. Poly bushes will be getting fitted as soon as funds allow.

Spent a couple of hours today getting another few jobs done, I didn't have long due to the weather but I decided to get something done during a break in the rain. I managed to get the rear blinds removed off the rear doors today, I had no need for them and didn't particularly like them so they're getting filed in the bin (unless someone wants them). I also noticed the other day that the front two tie down points were missing, it was only once I removed some of the boot floor that I realised they were not even bolted in. I forgot that Marc removed the rear brace when he sold me the car and that probably got in the way of the rear tie down points. Thankfully Marc had thrown them into one of the many spared boxes that he'd given me so they're now re attached.
The floor mats are currently doing a couple of laps in the washing machine, juydging by the amount of soap suds coming out of the powder draw I put too much washing up liquid in with them (oops..) After a good luck at them the mats have never been out the car as the carpet underneath is immaculate, that said the drivers mat has a hole in in so I could probably do with another.

I got excited today because I thought I'd found the cause of the central locking problem, I took the wiring multiplug off the passenger door and realised it too had about 6 wires missing....then I realised that as a PASSENGER door it wont have as much wiring going to it... :(

OK. One wheel done, 4 to go. This one isn't perfect (as I haven't done the back yet) but it's 500% better than the ones on the car and how it was when I first got it (sorry Frankie, but it was rough)..

No before photo as I forgot to take one (Just picture LOTS of kerbing and Lots of corrosion)

Decided to put the freshly painted wheel on the car today, as the back tyres are good and the fronts are shagged I thought I'd put the new one on the back and swap on of the backs to the front (still with me?), all went well until I got to the front wheel, all the bolts where stuck solid, after bashing them all with a large lump hammer to try and break their death grip I managed to undo thee (including the locking nut...which thankfully wasnt tight) the other two snapped...FFFFFFFFFF...etc.. Thankfully I managed to twist out the broken bits and fit new bolts. The wheel I removed has sadly a big dent in the back edge..this could be why it's got a slow leak (not sure as it's not a massive dent)... Not sure what to do now, is it worth repainting it or should I just get a replacement wheel?...

Pics to follow..

Well not done much this week...upto today, today I finally picked up the remaining plastic rivets for the bumper so tonight I've finally gotten around to removing the damn thing so I can repair it and repaint it (Sooo been wanting to do this since I got the car).
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/photo_zpsf7fae09b.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zpsf7fae09b.jpg.html)
A quick before shot showing some of the crap on the front of the bumper, apparently someone reversed into the front of it at some point, hence the big split in the front edge and the scuffed paint.

Took me about 15 minutes to remove the bumper as someone had used the wrong rivets to attach the wheel arch liners (metal ones are sooo ugly), once I finally got it off and stripped it down I found this on the back of one of the corners... (I knew it was full of filler anyway)

You can also see that the corner had split as at some point someones hit something really low and it stuffed all the bottom corner in.

Gawd I'm knackered, had a really busy day today. As I was up early I pulled the front bumper off and prepped it for paint, didn't take too long as I'd already done most of the groundwork last week. After about an hours work I managed to get it basecoated and laquered. Just as I was finished that my care package from James arrived, a replacement rad, intercooler, fan and aircon rad, also a replacement MAF, the rest of the day has been taken up with swapping bits over, had a major problem swapping the rad as the two mounting bolts that hold it in place got so far and then the captive nuts started to spin, I really struggled to get anything on them, finally managed to get the passenger side to snap off, the drivers side I had to break the radiator bracket off to give me enough room get at the captive nut. While the rad's where out I gave the chassis a clean up and then moved the horns, they now live under the N/s front wing. Not had chance to try it yet but it certainly sounds a lot healthier, just got to wait until tomorrow now to refit the front bumper as the paints still soft.

As the cars now running like it should I've started to get a few more costmetic jobs out the of the way. Managed to get the front bumper wiper blanks painted and then fitted today, these turned out ok. I've also given in and painted the front grill, I've never been a fan of the all silver grills on Volvo's, I wanted to remove the slash off the grill but couldn't get the damn clips on the back of it to move at all, so I've masked it up and just sprayed around it, scuffed up the plastic, wiped with pre paint and then painted with black etch primer and finally some satin black, looks a lot nicer and now I've also fitted the two grills Pete sent me (ta bud) the front actualy looks quite decent. Still got to make myself a front splitter as I've started it but I was too tired to finish the laminating last night, may get it done in a couple of weeks..

When I was looking at getting a V70 I was quite tempted to get a Cross country front and rear bumper just for a different look (cross country front bumper with R splitter ?!), may still get a rear one for the 850 but not sure how it would look as the lines are a little different.

Looks like one of the previous owners used it for target practise, then decided to try and hide all the damadge by just blowing fresh paint over the nice shiny existing paint, hence large chunks of paint have just peeled off. There's nothing quite like good preperation is there?.

Because of all the problems of late I've had no time or inclination to do anything on the car. The rear bumper still needs painting and recently it's started to run a bit rough again and use plenty of fuel again, I'm thinking though that its probably the O2 sensor getting crapped up with all the oil blowing through the exhaust.

Hoping to try and get the handbrake sorted over the next few days as it's crap, have to leave the car in gear otherwise it rolls, not sure if it's a cable it needs or if its just shoes, I'll pull the rear discs when I get a minute and check.

The last few times I've had the car on a bit of a drive (ie. motorways), when I've come to slow down and change gear I've noticed that the first press of the clutch is really heavy, after that it's ok. any ideas?..

Noticed that in the past week or so the cars lost it's oomph again and started stinking of petrol. Would I be right in presuming that as the seals are leaking on the turbo (if in fact that's what it is) and there's a constant flow of oil vapour through the exhaust that it would clog up the O2 sensor?. If it is then is there going to be a way of stopping this until I can afford to get the seals done on the turbo?.

This is the result of the blowout (not sure it actualy was a blow out looking at it) I had coming off the motorway the other day.

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/photo_zps30e401aa.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zps30e401aa.jpg.html)

I checked the spare rim I had taken off to put this one on and after doing a leak test I found air coming out of the valve and the area where the dent is on the back edge of the wheel, after a teeny bit of oil in the valve and a quick whack with the lump hammer both where looking a lot better. I then repeated the leak test again, left it a little longer and discovered that there's leaks in at least 4 places around the edge of the rim, I can only conclude that it's corrosion on the mating faces, looks like it'll have to wait until next week.

When I bought my silver V70 T5, someone had tried to sort the front bumper. They sprayed straight over the fog lights and plastic grilles, as I couldn't even see the fog lights when I bought her. They worked, but were under a thick layer of silver paint!! Complete botch job, until the R bumper was fitted.

Yeah someones done a similar thing with this car, they'd just sprayed over the front bumper with a new coat of paint, they'd not prepared it or anything, as a result most of it was just peeling off in big chunks. Both rear quarters have been repainted at some point too. I'd like to try and get all the paintwork done before winter but with the weather being as bad as it is it may have to wait.

Well a small job has turned into several larger jobs. I decided today to clean up the leather again, that took all of half an hour. While cleaning that I got really annoyed at the gearstick lock that's been fitted to the car at some point and decided that as I dont use it that had to go. To work out how it was bolted on I had to remove the rear part of the centre console, this was already in quite a state so I was pleased to be removing it so I could fix it up. Upon getting it out I realised that the bolts holding it in place must be in the tunnel...where the exhaust is (behind the bloody shielding), so sod that, I'll break the grinder out and chop it off. To facilitate that I removed the passenger seat, and the passenger carpet...to discover......a wet floor......FEK..... So now I have to repair the centre console, remove the stupid gearlock I wanted to remove in the first place and also I now have to replace the heter matrix (thankfully I think I have a spare in the shed)....I did think the windscreen was misting up a little the other night when I put it on hot....

Looks like its got lots of jobs for u tc it is a shame people let them get into this state but as ive said many times you minds well save up and buy a right one to start with as buying one that needs loads of work normally cost double that of a good one In the end its just a good job u do the work your self craig which will save you lots of money.

Thanksfully today's liitle trip into the land of "Fek it's borked" didn't cost me anything, I had antifreeze already in, I had a spare heater matrix and I had a spare day, all done...suprisingly no drama. The matrix took about an hour to replace at it came out very, very easily. I've also managed to remove the gearstick lock, wasnt too bad but the nuts used inside the car where some sort of wierd sort that had a revolving outer rim that made them impossible to remove - unless of course you have a grinder, this made very short work of them. The centre console has been repaired where I could but really it needs replacing, it's really rather tatty and also now has a nice 4 inch long slit down the passenger side where the gearstick lock used to live.

To be honest guys so far it doesnt owe me that much, granted some of the repairs have come via generous parts donations off forum members but on the whole it wasn't too bad mechanicaly to start off with. The brakes are ok (just ok), they're not brilliant but they work fine at normal road speeds, being as I dont plan on driving like a lunatic any time soon they'll be ok until I replace them next month. Did check today while it was jacked up and the fuel filter needs replacing too, it looks original...so very, very, rusty.

As far as it turning into a money pit.... I kinda knew what I was getting into and at the time it was all I could afford, if I had more money at the time then I too would have bought something different, probably another T5-R if I'm honest. I do like this car it's just that it's a long term project, which kinda suits me as I've always got something to do on it if I get bored.

Speaking of which, after all that drama I thought "Sod it" and whipped the cone filter off for a clean, it's been looking very grubby since I got the car but I hadnt gotten around to cleaning it. I gave it a good shot of K&N airfilter cleaner and left it to soak in for ten minutes, after which I rinsed it out (from the inside obviously), I was rather shocked by the crap that came out of it..

Here it is before cleaning:

Yes I am. The whole point of the oil is that it helps to trap the smaller particles of dust in the filter, thats why the tell you to rinse them from the inside out, otherise the water pushes the particles further into the filter. I think the problems come from over oiling filters, my oil isnt spray stuff it comes in a bottle, so umm god knows how I'm gonna do this as I need to put a small bead on the edge of every fold... That's gonna take a hell of a long time to do.. Wonder if I can find a spray bottle and pour the oil into it?

If it was me, I think I'd prioritise getting the tyres and brakes sorted ASAP. Didn't you say the brakes are only good for gentle driving, anything more and there useless? Inefficient
brakes and poor tyres sounds like a recipe for disaster, hate for you to have an accident and damage your car or worse someone else's.

Tomcat
Sunday 4th August 2013, 13:18
No the brakes are ok, I only said they where ok fot normal driving because after a rather spirited drive the other day at the Demon Tweeks meet I had rather squeely brakes afterwards. Believe me if they where that bad then I wouldnt even be driving it. The tyres are fine, I just need the two off side ones re seating as they have slight leaks on the rim.

Finally got around to finishing the front splitter I started making for my own car!, this is the first one I've ever made for myself.. Basically I'm lazy and if it wasn't something that was making me money then it didnt get done,lol.. This time however I want to get the front of the car looking good so as I already have the stuff in I may as well make one. Also making myself a pair of headlight eyebrows, think they really suit the V70, normally I would just buy a pair but I have no spare money at the minute so as I have the materials I may as well just make some,lol.. Here's hoping the turn out ok.

Pics to follow...

Had quite a busy day today, I decided to get a couple of jobs out of the way and things sort of snowballed. I started off removing the windscreen wiper arms to repaint them, they'd gotten quite badly stone chipped (how the hell does that happen anyway?), while they where off I noticed that for some strange reason one of the wipers was a lot smaller than it should be, this has now been replaced with a handy spare one I had lying around. I then decided to finally fit the replacement rear window washer pump I've had lying around for months, this went a lot smoother than I though it would and I now have a working rear wash wipe. I've removed the stickers for the gearstick lock as I hate having pointless stickers in the windows (also the windows are getting tinted at some point anyway). After all this I decided that the engine bay was looking very sorry for itself..

Before:
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/photo_zpscddc42a2.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zpscddc42a2.jpg.html)
As you can see the engine has lots of that orrible engine laquer on it (curse the guy/woman that invented that crap), took ages to scrape it all off, I then gave the head a bit of a clean up along with the fuel rail and a few other bits and pieces and I then decided to paint the cam cover and the inlet manifold.

After:
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/volvo850t5r/photo_zpsdc7e738a.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zpsdc7e738a.jpg.html)
Not the best job I've ever done but certainly an improvement on what it was, to do much more I'm going to have to strip things down and I really wasnt in the mood for that today.

Once all this was complete I decided I would finally fit one of my own splitters to the front of the car, this is actualy the first one I've ever put on any of my cars, not out of not wanting to, purely because I'm a lazy bugger and couldn't be bothered making one before,lol.. I have a feeling that after repairing the bumper it's now a slightly different shape as it was a pig to fit and I'm not overly happy with how far back the front edge is, given more time I'd have hacked it up and remade it fit better.

Finished it all off with a wash, now knackered and going in search of alcohol.

Looking good, the work you've done to the engine bay, even if your not happy with it has made it look a lot cleaner/tidier just like the way a low mileage bay would look, job well done. Splitter finishes it off at the front but then I've always loved the TC splitter :)

Thanks Andy, still tons to do yet but it's slowly coming together. No idea why I've never put a splitter on one of my cars before, glad I put one on this as it ad's a lot to the look of the front end. Should have some eyebrows for it in the next day or so, they're just being finished now so as soon as I have them painted I'll get em on. Also got an eggcrate grill coming next week as well, didn't cost very much, just hope it's as good as it looks in the pics.

Added another new piece the other day, nothing amazing, just an egg crate grill that I managed to pick up reasonably cheap off Ebay, undecided on painting it or not yet. Appologies for the poor photo, it was getting a little dark when I took it.

A few weeks ago I was filling up the car at the petrol station and noticed something rattling around in the very top part of the rear lights, that weekend I pulled both lights off and fished these out:

I'm presuming that they're a strobe bulb?.. they where obviously fitted by one of the previous owners but I dont know why, does anyone know the history on this car?.

Tomcat
Thursday 5th September 2013, 14:20
After doing some investigating on the forum today I've worked out that one of the previous owners refurbed the turbo, I have no idea how good the refurb was but the car's still producing blue smoke. Going to get a compression test done before I buy anything, make sure it's not the rings, failing that it's another rebuild or the stem seals.

Well being as I've finally found a little bit of time where I wont need the car for a couple of days I've decided to repaint the wheels, sadly it's not going to be a full on strip down refurb as I dont have time for that, just going to clean up and repaint the outer faces. Before I started on them they where badly kerbed, chipped, the top coat of powder coating was peeling off in large chunks due to it not bonding properly and they just looked a site. Spent most of yesterday cleaning up the two nearside wheels and then painting them. Got them back on the car today and now I'm on with the two offside wheels, they're currently in primer but I hope to get them done by the end of today. Here's a couple of photos of yesterdays wheels.

I know the backs of the wheels are going to be rougher than rough now as i didnt mask them off, they'll get done at some point when I have a little more free time.

Not quite sure what colour this is, I kinda made it out of some spare paint I had lying around, it sorta looks like Anthracite, I think they could do with being a little darker but they'll do for now as they're definatley an improvement on how they where before.

On the down side I'm replacing the side lights with LED strips, I ordered them ages ago and they sent the wrong ones. The right ones came today, then it dawned on me that I hadnt actualy ordered enough, I only ordered two and as they need doubling up I need another two so I've ordered them again today. Thankfully most of that was simple to fix, the LED's I'd just wired in the wrong way around (the wiring on the LED'd is crap to say the least), after reversing both sides they both work perfectly. Now looking forward to having better lights at night.. Just hope I dont blind anyone as I've not had the chance to check the alignment yet as it's still light out. Better bulbs will get fitted at some point, at the moment I'm just glad to have headlights that look and function better than the old ones.

Oh and as a side note.. I wasn't overly impressed with the way the indicator units fitted, they refused to line up with the mounting holes (even with the headlights left loose for wiggle room)..

some people use a sharp knife to trim off the little spacing tags on the indicators to let them sit closer to the headlights if they find fitment is tight.

looks nice, like the led's

so much better than when i saw it.

Ahhh, lol, yes it was those spacers that caused the problem. I managed to wiggle them in in the end but I was worried about breaking off one or both the mounting tabs in the process. Still they're on now... and thanks, it was a bit rough when I first bought it.

Mega chuffed with the way the headlights turned out, new lenses an a few other new bits has helped but being as I only paid £80 for them I'm not complaining. There's still a shed load of other work to do on her but she's certainly on the right side again.

Thanks Ian, so much happier with the front now. Just hope that the two retaining bolts on the n/s headlight that kept pulling out will stay in place, dont want a headlight falling out do I?

Yeah... Only thing I need to do now is change the headlight bulbs for something with a white lite as the yellow bulbs looks crap alongside the white LED's...

Looks the business TC, you really know how to turn a motor around! I have to say too I've never really been a fan of projectors but on your car in silver with the newer grill it seems to work.

Im guessing you'd still rather have the old R back though?

Thanks, I wasn't too sure about them on a silver car but now they're fitted I love them. You know.... I think I may finally have gotten over the black R, really like this car now (bar a few little niggles).

That's smashing mate, I've got funds building up again now I'm married. Lol
Keep seeing the splitters on cars & it really is missing & it will set it off more when I lower it.
Cheers mate, happy now. :)
