Finally got time today to check the compression on the engine. I checked it cold and hot and there's very little difference, book says it should be between 11-13bar mine where all around 12, very little in them all maybe.2 of a bar something like that, but that could be just down to not cranking for the same amount of time on each one. Soooo it's gotta be either stem seals or the turbo. As I now have a rebuild kit for the turbo that's my next move, I'm off around the 21st for a week so that'll be when I attempt it.

As I had to take the sparkplug cover off today to do the compression test I finally decided to cut and polish the cover, looks loads better now..

Speaking of sparkplugs though I had a look at the colour of the plugs when I took them out for testing and they all look a little er...white/pale.. I thought they where supposed to be a nice browny colour?... Is it running weak?

Appologies for the pic being blurred, the sun was shining and I couldnt see the screen to see if it was in focus or not. You can sort of get the picture though?..

No, white is fine, back when I started driving.you could tell your car was running well if the inside of the exhaust was white.

Not been on much latley what with feeling completley jaded and uninterested, however I feel a little pick me up coming in the form of a new design for the rear bumper, maybe over the chistmas break from Uni.

This is something I knocked together in photoshop this morning, ignore the sides of the bumper they didnt turn out quite how I'd wanted but you get the idea, this will be getting made just for my car.

I'm not 100% sold on the diffuser but the sides would work nicely (I see what you were getting at with the pic, angles like that are hard to produce)

Sorry for those that dont like it but it's still getting done, I've always felt the back end of the volvo's is a weak styling area. The front looks very aggresive but the back could be any old V70, if it's good enough for the likes of the AMG Merc's then it's good enough for the back of my car.

M-R-P
Wednesday 4th December 2013, 15:23
Fair play mate. It's not about what makes everybody else happy, styling is a personal thing. I'm sure, once it's done, it'll look great. Especially with your skills.

At the Ace Cafe last weekend, two guys were stood looking at the front of mine for a while before one said "looks aggressive". Made my day :)

The car got a small prezzie today, I finally managed to get hold of the trim piece that goes around the rear tailgate inner handle, it's been missing since I repaired the tailgate trim all those months ago, I had to get it from Volvo in the end, cost me a massive £11 but I think even I can manage that, lol.

Stuff to come in the coming month, replace a couple of tyres, try and sort the central locking, look in the rear boot floor to see if they're filling up with water.. (cd player misteriously stopped working the other day and all the rear windows are steaming up) and maybe get around to trying the HID kits that came with the car.

I've got an alpine changer minus the mag if it's any good to you mate? I think the bumper will look ok if it's pulled off properly. Getting the exhaust to sit nice would be my concern. Wish my car had come up so well so quickly.
It's not a race, it's a marathon. Lol

Tomcat
Saturday 14th December 2013, 16:51
Thanks Biff, I'll bear it in mind once I've had a look at it, not sure what's wrong yet, it's played up before and when removed the cartridge and re inserted it it worked fine afterwards. As for the rest of the car, the bodywork looks pretty nice now (though it's no where near perfect yet) but the mechanical side of it is still crap. Hopefully in the new year I will be able to afford the other bits and pieces it needs doing, the only reason it's come up so well is the paint and bodywork side I can do for myself.

Mine still needs a few hundred quid in bits & then I'll concentrate on the interior & cosmetics side. I can't wait to get it somewhere near now mate & get out & about in it properly. I'll have to pop up for a splitter & some pictures.
The changers here if you want it mate, it's been in my boot since I bought the car with the volvo stereo in.

Managed to get the cd changer working again today, unplugged/plugged the lead at the changer end, tried it... nothing. Unplugged/plugged the lead at the head unit end, nothing. Ejected the cd cartridge.. and working... Despite the fact that I'd previsouly ejected the cartridge a few times and it had done sod all this time it worked. Can only presume it was a dodgy connection.

While I was looking at the car I realised the service light bulb has either been removed or has blown, as I cant get the service light reset any more because someone borrowed my reset tool and never returned it I'll leave it as is for now. I also found that the drivers seat was a bit 'wobbly' in the left hand lower corner, after rumedging around I found a loose bolt in the bottom corner of the seat back, it's slightly better now but there's still something a little loose somewhere.

Not updated for ages as there's been sod all to show (due to a complete lack of funds). Car has been running faultlessly with the exception of the central locking in the rear doors has started to get a bit slow. Today, I've been and picked up a new set of wheels (new to me anyway), these are going to get stripped, repainted etc in the coming weeks..

Also finished making an new splittter shape for the V70's as apparently the last one didn't fit too well..

Nothing really new to report as I've been busy with other stuff, only recently managed to get the wheels stripped and started to get them painted..

Had to paint these twice, the first time was with a Vaxhaull shade of anthracite, this was basically sparkly brown so that got binned and I made some up myself from some left over paint. Got two centres done, just got the other two to flat and paint and the outers to clean up.

Thanks Andy.. I've just had a read back through and apparently I missed a rather crucial update a good while back...

Car now has a fully rebuilt turbo on it. After buying a kit off Ebay so I could fit new seals and bearings to the turbo to stop it smoking I eventually realised that the shaft on the turbo was knackered, it was sent off to a specialist who sourced a good second hand shaft, fitted the new bearings and seals and also balanced it for a very cheap price.

Ooops.. Missed this as well...

Back in January..

Finally!!!!.. On Thursday I managed to get all my rear brakes replaced, new discs, pads, handbrake shoes, new fitting kit for the shoes, new handbrake cables. Took most of the morning as it was peeing down on and off (including hail at one point), I had to cut the old cables off with a grinder as they just wouldnt budge due to being completely worn through and siezed. Discs had seen much better days, they where badly scored and pitted, all nice and shiny and new now..

Forgot to take any after pics ( I know.. the best bit).. but here's some before pics..

Wheels are now finished and back together again, sadly I have one wheel that has four bolts that wont tighten up and another that just has the one. All bolts have thread lock on them to stop the unfastening, the five that wont fighten up at all I'm going to try some PTFE tape on them to get them to grip, as long as they tighten up a bit I'll be happy, at the moment all five are just loose and spinning.

It's been a busy couple of weeks with the car recently, got a few jobs done and some tidying up. I'm still working on getting rid of the intermitant ABS light and also getting the handbrake to actualy work properly (even though it's almost all new parts). Last weekend I swapped out the rear ABS sensors as they where coming up as faulty/intermitant, this was a complete pig of a job as it requires the fuel tank to be moved out of the way to get the wires past it, I also replaced the short length of fuel pipe from the tank to the filter which had been bodged when I bought the car. The fuel pipe was relatively easy to swap out as it was just a push fit at both ends, the abs sensors where a bloody nightmare though as the actual sensors where seizes in on both hubs, nothing some brute force and ignorance with a hammer couldnt rectify though.

The old (Bodged) fuel pipe and battered ABS sensors

Brakes after painting, I used silver as it was the only colour I had handy, glad I did though as it seems to go well with the wheels.

Also got around to fitting the rear lights I bought off Dan, had a few problems with these as one of them arrives broken, managed to repair it though and thankfully it's not visible unless you open the boot. Could do with getting hold of a replacement upper left hand rear light though if anyone knows of any?.

And a quick one of the car at one of the recent shows, now with a splitter finally fitted too.

Still lots to do, I'm hoping to try and get some of the remaining little faults sorted over the coming weeks, the handbrake I now have an idea on, the abs I will have to try and work out why its still logging the rear sensors as faulty and the minor smoking issue I'm gonna check the PCV replacement to make sure it's been done properly.

Car is looking spot on Craig, like the wheels and I think you're right with the choice of brake colour complements the wheels nicely :)

On a side note I can believe that you've finally treated yourself to one of your own front splitters, it's only been around 6 years since you first started making them.... lol

Progress from today.

Had some more supplies arrive today so I could get a little more invloved in this bumper build. Added some more shape to the bumper skin around the opening for the diffuser, still needs some more shaping but it's certainly getting there now. Also added some curves into the diffuser itself, the teeth will be added in tomorrow probably.

Well today is suspension swap day, rear nivo's are being swapped out in favour of Bilsteins and replacement springs. Started well already, managed to snap on of the bolts holding the top mounts in the captive nut, got around that managed to fit the replacement top mount. Moved onto the spring, bottom nut that holds the spring in place is just turning the whole bolt in the retainer, cant get anything in there to secure it, cant even weld it in place as I'd run out of welding wire previously and didnt realise.. Hmmph.... Thought about digging the grinder out and chopping the bottom retaining nut off, just checked though and the new retainers dont come with any nuts.. Think I should never have started this...

Thanks bud.. looks a hell of a lot better now doesn't it?..

Well I won!.. I manged to get the otherside done fairly painlessly, then went back to the drivers side. No matter what I tried the spring retainer bolt wouldnt come undone. In the end I cut the spring to pieces with my grinder and then ground the back off the captive bolt so I could pull it through what was left. New stuff went back on without a hitch (though I did have to find new nuts for them as there was none supplied).

Pics to follow..

TBH it was a doddle, in the past I've tried to remove the lid by prying it out of it's slot but this time I just took a hacksaw blade and gently cut it off all the way around, made it a much easier task. The soldering was childs play, I used to be a TV engineer so soldering is second nature to me, following one of the guides to work out what needed soldering it only took about 20 mins from start to finish, and that includes reattaching the lid and bolting it back on.

Yeah I know, I'm still undecided myself,lol.. Have to wait until I've sorted the few problems out and then painted it, looks a bit much all in grey but once the centre section is in black it'll not look as bad.

Some people just don't seem to be able to imagine what the final painted look will be like, and to be honest that angle the photo is taken at doesn't do it any favors, if the car was at the correct height and the picture was taken at eye level it would look completely different.

Gotten a few jobs done recently..

Recovered the drivers seat with the covers off the 99 year car, would have just put the seat straight in but the airbags are different. The last couple of days I've swapped the drivers door over and the sill cover, the old door had a nasty dent at the bottom that had pushed the skin down and it had scratched the sill cover. Swapped the door handle over to keep the same lock, all nice and straight again now.

I've never been the shy retiring sort as far as my cars go, no point holding back now is there?.. No real news but the cars been merrily munching away at the miles lately, with the exception of a few minor problems it's been plain sailing.

Last week the tint on both front windows decided to start to peel at the bottom edges, it's only a very light tint (stops it having the van look) but as it's still under warranty they've kindly agreed to come out and replace it for me. Around a week earlier I started to notice a rubbing type noise that was coming from what seemed like the N/S front, as I've not been too well recently I took it into the indy round the corner that I know really well and asked them to have a quick look ( I was also having some steering problems too). They told me to bring it in and then stuck it up on the ramps, after five minutes he brought it back and told me they couldnt find anything wrong, as I know my car quite well I wasn't really impressed by this and I felt fobbed off so I thought I'd have a look myself instead. When I eventually got around to crawling under it recently I found that the O/s inner cv boot was ripped and the two inner track control arm bushes are worn and allowing the arm to move around a little, why they couldnt have told me this the other day I dont know, I was more than willing to pay them for their time. The rubbing noise I think I've eventually figured out is the handbrake cable on the N/s rubbing against the back of the wheel, these cables came with no clips to allow you to rivet them to the trailing arm so I had to make do and use cable ties, these sadly weren't upto the job. Today I've ordered some replacements from FRF, rather dear at nigh on £60 a side but more than worth it if they fit and actually allow the handbrake to work again.

As lots of you will know the cars had a smoking problem since I got it, I've now got a replacement head waiting to go on, along with new timing belt, I just need to gather a few more gaskettes and some head bolts before I attempt the swap. While I was on the phone to FRF today I ordered the special sealant for the cam cover.. Crap that stuff aint cheap is it?.. £35 a bottle!!.. Hope to get the head done towards the end of October when I get a week off Uni.

Finally an update!!

Not had anything to really write about for a long time now as I've just been driving it. The car has had other ideas though and as the MOT was up at the end of January I decided to buy another car to run around in while I took the V70 off the road for some long awaited maintentance.

As the run around has turned out to be a bit of a pig in a poke I was unsure about starting work but as the MOT had expired anyway I decided to strip the car down today, all went pretty well with the exception of finding two sparkplugs lose, breaking two and also finding that the inlet manifold was lose as well (after a previous owner fitted a PCV kit)

I only started around 10-11 oclock but I've managed to get it stripped right back and its currently just needing the turbo and downpipe removing before the head can be taken off.

More progress on the R today, got the inlet manifold cleaned up and painted, also managed to finaly get the head off as well. Sadly the head decided to put up a fight though as some ham fisted idiot had obviously over tightened the head bolts last time, got 11 out of twelve bolts out without a problem but one decided to snap. Strangely enough yes, it's on the exhaust side, I thought it was going to be relatively easy to drill and use an easy out but having had another look this morning its actually about 5-6 cm's down inside the block so the drill bits I have will barely reach it. This may mean new block time as I cant see an easy way of getting this sorted. I've just emailed a local spark errosion place to see if its something they could do, just waiting on a reply.

...not good...no chance of getting the extractor out? Post a picture up maybe someone will have an idea

Cant even see it bud, the whole lot is a good 5 or 6 cm's down inside the block. I'm just going to leave it for now and get back to it when I have more time/money. I dont think it's going to be fixable as that bolt is in there really tight (hence why it snapped), think the best way forward is to just replace the bottom end.

Weird, thought I'd updated this thread recently.

I've now managed to purchase a complete engine to replace the now defunct one in my R, there's no point trying to get this stud out, it's too far down inside the block and with the extractor now stuck in it as well there's bugger all chance.

The last few days have been spent removing stuff and getting it ready for the new engine, with the help of Mr Sideways today we've managed to get everything removed (driveshafts as well) and get the subframe almost on the floor. This car seems to have a large appetite for tools, todate it's broken two breaker bars, a torq wrench and now a teng ratchet. All of them where broken (bar the ratchet) trying to undo the drive shaft nuts, these buggers where on mega tight. The driverside one we've had to leave attached to the hub and just removed the strut and driveshaft as one.

The only thing stopping me from removing the engine totaly now is the fluid line going to the clutch internal slave, I cannot for the life of me see how it's attached.

Well, engines out and now sat on the floor outside (in the rain) with no head on it. As it's now effectively only usefull as a boat anchor there didn't seem any point in taking it inside. Gearbox is now in the garage being cleaned up (it was absolutely filthy), once it's clean I'm not sure what to do with it, I'd like to check the diff bearings but I'm terrified of opening up the gearbox lol. I may just take it to a gearbox centre and ask them to give it a once over for me.

It's surprisingly easy to open up the gearbox, but you will then have to sealant it back together afterwards, there's a thread on vs re a quaife install that shows how to open up the box, but you just want to check play in the diff bearings opening it up may not help much as there tappered, you'll be better off just popping the shafts back in and checking for play or as you say take it to a gearbox guy for complete peace of mind

Yeah I think I'll take it in somewhere as I want to get rid of this horrible noise. Not really sure if it's gearbox, diff, clutch or drive shafts tbh.. I know it didn't really get any worse over the 8 or 9 months I heard it for but it is annoying.

Well the old engine is now in a pile of pieces, and the NEW engine has arrived.. I say new like that because it looks anything but new, apparently it's had wildlife living on it for a while and they weren't toilet trained.

After removing the old engine I was trying to decide what I should do about the weird noise I've been experiencing that could have been gearbox, flywheel or clutch related. After removing the old flywheel today and watching a few video's about them on youtube I'm thinking it could actually be the DMF that's been the cause of the odd noise. The sprung face of the flywheel can be moved around very easily, need to double check tomorrow if there's any rattle to it as that would definitley indicate a knackered flywheel. If this is in fact the cause then I will be trying to pick up a single mass flywheel off an 850 and also an 850R clutch, I'm not going to risk fitting another second hand DMF that may only last another few thousand miles before failing as well.

New engine has been stripped down a little so I could clean up the block and throw some paint on it, there was no way I could stick it in the car looking like it did even if it is a freshly rebuilt motor. It has now been mostly painted silver and the head has been painted crackle black. hopefully in the coming weeks I can see about getting it fitted (provided I can spare the time away from my studies to get it done that is)

Not got around to the water yet as the weathers been pants anyway. I did however manage to have a second look at the DMF today and upon closer inspection it looks fine, there's minimal movement in the springs and no movement at all in the centre bearing. Not really sure where to go with this now as I could still stick a SMF in it just to remove the possibility of it failing at a later date, this also means I'll have to buy a none DMF clutch though. Together with the new flywheel it's going to cost me nigh on £300 to swap it out (that's not including switching to an external slave if I have to).

If the Flywheel is currently ok, and the clutch was definitley ok (no slipping etc) then the only possible source of the whine would be the gearbox. As most places are wanting at least £150-£250 just to open mine up and tell me whats wrong with it I may just go for a replacement gearbox instead. Wish there was as cheaper way of getting around all this but sadly there doesn't seem to be. Still need to buy a few other bits for the suspension and also pay for the new downpipe I'm having made.

the internal slave should be fine if you swap to smf, as I ran that set-up on my low ratio box before I killed it (oil has it's uses....lol)....does the box whine in all gears or just one or two, does it go when you accelerate and return on the over run..??

It's more noticeable around 20-30 mph when coasting down in speed, can't really hear it at motorway speeds and it doesn't seem to matter what gear it's in, also pushing the clutch in doesn't make much if any difference.

Still no major news on this, engine still isn't in as I went to refit the flywheel the other day with my sparkly new bolts and realised that Volvo had sent me bolts for a flex plate rather than a flywheel (even though I also asked them for some clutch cover bolts too). Now sat waiting for them to arrive before I can start putting stuff back together again. In the mean time, subframe is now back in place fitted with some lovely poly bushes that mr Tempest suppied me with (cheers bud), stil trying to get a few bits and pieces lined up and I also think I need to re route the fuel lines as I've put them where the downpipe will go and that would be a VERY bad idea lol. Should have some pics to post in a few days (if it EVER stop raining)

Not looking forward to this at all.

So 6-700 miles later and I have.. an oil leak from the turbo oil return (or somewhere around there), a leaky expansion tank cap, a rattling downpipe, a leaky exhaust (somewhere.. I can hear it sodding blowing on tickover), a buggered rear door central locking motor, a missing rear wheel centrecap and also an egg in a front tyre that was only fitted the day before.

Having just bucket loads of fun lately. Bought four part worn Vredestein's off Seb, had them fitted and then drove to Lincoln and back. On the way back I diverted through Huddersfield (dont ask) and went over an ubber fekkin massive pothole. Didn't realise till I got home that I'd lost a centre cap and also now gained an egg in the sidewall of one of my front tyres. Now ordered two brand new Yoho's to replace the two fronts with. Also had the worlds worst tyre fitter to fit them, he managed to struggle to locate four spacers, took him a good 15 minutes a wheel and he had to resort to using a sodding screwdriver to prize them into place, in the end I told him to leave the back ones, I did one of the front ones and I told him to leave the other one. I now have at least two maybe three rims with the paint all chewed up around the bolt holes, going back on Tuesday to shout at the manager.

Car is doing its bloody utmost to pee me off lately. :(

sometimes with all the effort you've put in it becomes the final straw and the camels back.

Sort what's urgent after shouting at the manager and do nothing else for a good month, if oil return isn't terrible just check level and use the car.

My gwe dp is up hard against the bracket that protects the prop tunnel and the heat shield vibes underneath a bit but can't be heard in the car and I get a little vibe, but I did anyway with everything polyd on front end.

With working on the Gul (a total pita) and the olive the sonic is just patiently waiting until both are finished, then tbh I don't want to touch another Volvo for a good year or two

Been out in the car again today and it's driving ok, though the exhaust blow is somewhat annoying. Fettled my downpipe/exhaust again today (about the 6th time), hopefully it stays in place this time and stops blowing. Also think I nay have found the source of my oil leak, I dont think it was the turbo return pipe after all, I'm hoping it was just one of the unions that wasn't tight enough on the turbo.

I also managed to find a persistant clicking noise I had when pulling away, turns out that not just one but both handbrake cables where rubbing against the back of the wheels, now pinned both back for the time being with cable ties as I dont have the correct 'P' bracket for the cables (they never came with any from Volvo). Car still had a bit of a whine coming from what I think is the aircon pump, system has no gas in it at the moment so I'm hoping once it's gassed up that it shuts up, also has a slight whine from what I think is the clutch release bearing but its working fine and not leaking so I'll leave that be for the time being.

After getting an egg in one of my replacement tyres I've now had two brand new tyres fitted on the fronts, I bought Yoko Parada's in 225x40x18's really seam to grip in the dry, not had chance to test them in the wet yet.

Had the car back for a little while now and its driving ok, MOT is overdue though as it failed last week when I put it in. They failed it on a split tyre (didn't even know about it), worn front ball joint, SRS light on and no cat (wouldnt mind but they passed it last year with no cat) SRS light has been on since I got the car back and apparently its coming up as either the drivers seat belt or the steering wheel airbag, seat belt has been replaced as it was jammed but the light still wont go out.

Need to spend a couple of days going through the car once I have some spare time and it's not peeing down, think most of the cars current problems are minor.

Need to get a wishbone, an expansion tank (as this ones leaking from somewhere), a tyre and then spend a few hours on it (preferably when its not raining). I will attempt to get the damn things exhaust finally sorted once I have some money, hoping to get the downpipe to exhaust V flanged as its constantly blowing there and also get the second pipe fitted at the back (still bugs me that I have two openings but only one pipe)

Wow, not updated this thread in a while. Been a baaaad year..I separated from my wife last year, moved into a smaller place with my daughter about six months ago. My wife finally moved out of our house last week but not before my tool boxes went missing. My wife then died last week....

Car is back to smoking its tits off if it's left idling for long (especially noticeable in heavy queuing traffic), Clutch release bearing squeels unless slight pressure is applied to the clutch, Drivers side drive shaft is knackered and in dire need of replacement, brakes still need bleeding, sunroof drains need clearing and the engines feeling rather flat (I actually got passed by a Golf GTI this morning and I WAS trying).

The main problem I currently have (besides having no tools and a dead wife) is that I dont have anywhere to work on my car, I am going to attempt to replace my tools and then possibly find somewhere to work on her. Need a good few jobs doing as she's currently being used for travelling to work and back every day (50+ miles).

Stay tuned for more exciting updates..
