is the 960 throttle body a good idea or not, ive just found an old thread about making a homemade RIP and using one, but on there and other places it says it makes the throttle very on/off switch like.

is it that littral and unbearable or is it a good thing, i can imagine what it would feel like. im trying to price up bits of pipe and hose, so if i went for the 960 body i would have to price in an inlet manifold aswell and some porting tools.

cheers

Yes it is a good upgrade to do if you have one..

you can keep your old inlet manifold, you just need to open the inlet from the T.B up and as said elsewhere on here a n abrasive flap-wheel will easily do a good job. You will need an adaptor pipe from the new T.B back to the original intercooler pipework, anything else you want to do is up to you.

ya i was thinking of doing it all in one go, i was only thinking of getting another manifold so i could port it at my leasuire on the bench, so i dont get any bit in the engine and my car's a daily.
to the scrap yard i go then hehe.

I was going to stuff the manifold with oiled rags and rely on a good hoover out, but I was also toying with getting a second manifold, time will be the deciding factor as I want to do everything in one go, but then I will not know how well matched the inlet ports are on the standard manifold, so I may as well modify that and port it to the head at the same time. As you said, my car is my daily and I'll probably have to arrange something else for a day or two, but we will see, really have to get on with this now, ready for the next drag race and measuring the gains from it.

Thanks Colin, I'll bear that in mind. I have alot to do if I'm going to run a york next, things weren't great at the end of avon last time. Hoping its down to a split hose or something similar. Less than 14.5 will take a bit of work but I think she has it in her, so we will see.

Done this.
Boring out the TB hole Took me about 2 hours, got a set of rotary rasp file bits, a flap wheel will take forever. Had to wait for drills to cool down a few times. Finished with a hand file and then polished up with a flapwheel.

Only issue I found is the "new" TB has the throttle postion pot on at a different angle:>(. Thought it would be an easy change, the mount bracket is reversible and the TPS itself is the same part number, BUT the flat on the spindle is also at a different angle, so stuck with the TPS being at 90 degrees - hope the wiring fits when it goes back on the car. Any thoughts anyone??

Pics to follow. Also removed casting flashings from inside the manifold and in the runners to the injection ports. A bit of emery and a long stiff finger worked.
Washed out with paraffin, gunk and a garden hose, followed by a compressed air blowjob, sorry blow dry.

The TB gasket is common to both - the central hole is just the right size for the new TB (but oversized for the old one) and made a nice guide to cut to. Removing about 5mm of metall around took longer than I thought it would and killed a couple of file bits.

Will report on performance in a couple of weeks.

on the throttle position sensor being at the wrong angle, you have to extend the wiring so it reach round from what i have read.

i used the flap sander below & didn't take long at all. As for the wiring to the TPS i had to extend mine

I just did this at the weekend, mucked around with the throttle pot wiring and changing the angle of the throttle pot. I can make the wiring reach but I had to 'adjust' the main loom a little to bring it a touch closer. I may extend the wiring anyway as it's tuggin' a bit !

so what do you think of the upgrade?

i swear by it, when i first fitted my 19t the lag was so bad i almost went back to a 15g. Swopping to the 3" throttle body & 3" rip totally transformed it & spools up just as quick as if it was a 15g now. As mentioned some do say the throttle is a bit aggressive but i still used it as an everyday car ok

Has anyone with a 40 series fitted a 960 body?
I just wondered if it fitted??

(Hopefully) attached some pics. although the bigger TB not yet on the car - I left the 850 one on for now as I have enough problems getting it through the MoT without more unknowns. Done all the machining while the inlet was off for PCV clean and new pipes all round. Was blocked and perished, but also turbo seals gone.:>( In have a diagnostic check now to see if lanbda sensor has been fouled up. (oh not mention the "new" ABS module which is not working)

Planning to fiddle with the TB on the bench, - I have a spare 850 20v N-A one which I can fiddle with to get the TPS etc sorted. You can see all 3 in the pic. Only difference to the turbo one is the large plastic wedge fitted to the butterfly. Cant help thinking this would be the cause of the reported "sharp" throttle response encountered changing to the 960 body? That device would cause the aperture to be restricted until a greater angle of throttle opening - I bet the same effect would occur simply changing to the N/A throttle body. Its also going to restirct airflow at wide open position.

In the pics you can see the 850 TB gasket is the same size as the 960 TB bore.

Regards to all.

t its not back on the car

Thanks woz nice to see the differences, my TB is going on in the next few days, pipework permitting, as I still need her as a daily, all thanks to a certain supermarket stuffing up my car share with the mrs's (not very green of you Tesco's....lol)
