I have a new K&N induction kit sitting and was wondering if it would be worth fitting and is it straight forward to fit? Seems a shame to have the kit sitting in a box doing §§§§§§ all.

Piece of cake, have a browse on youtube mate, plenty of guides, maybe not volvo specific but pretty much the same.

you could keep the bottom half of the air box, like i had on mine:

In fact heres a guide ;)

Although if it was me i wouldn't take off bottom air box housing off, or air filter feed from the slam panel. Install it like above.

Just take the top of the box off, undo air sensor from the air filter side and connect the induction kit. Rest in the bottom of the box, simple.

if you fit a little filter it can fit into the bottom half of the box, but if you want a big cone the whole lot will have to come out

Get the induction kit fitted, strip the bonnet insulation, and enjoy the sound. ;)
