say if i wanted to take a 850 t5 to the next level say to around a genuine 400hp what would need doing, i understand the rods are the weak point in 850's so is there another bottom end with stronger internals that you can fit the head on or is it a case of you have to strip and rebuild with stronger rods? also if you have the bottom end strong enough what turbo would you go for and would standard injectors be enough, obviously i know it would need some sort of custom mapping, anyone in the south west you can recommend?

lastly would the standard 5 speed gear box fit and it there a lsd you could recommend? does the t5r or 850r come with a lsd gearbox or is it aftermarket only?

thanks very much

all you need is rods, a garrett gt3071, matching injectors and a custom map and brakes etc probably about £2500

Cool, is it cheaper to get new rods fitted or is there a bottom end of a newer t5 that can cope and would fit?

To strip and rebuild a forged 850 engine would cost around £1300, a good turbo would be about same.

The s60r bottom end is forged and is good for 400bhp, all you have to do is drop a 850 head on it.

search blackbeast on here, he has a 450bhp v70 t5

It costs slightly more than that,
my garrett was £1200, thats before any of the pipework,
Simens Deka 630cc injectors were £120,
Map, mines on a Turbo Tuner ECU, £300+ (mine was 2nd hand)
Brakes, I've got AP Racing £1200, then I had to get different wheels £600
Rods are £500
You will need to think about a LSD for the 'box, either Gripper or Quaife or an 850R box

Its not a cheap upgrade, but once its done, it will be fun! :D

Thats good :)

All the prices I put is what I paid for the bits on mine, if you can get them cheaper, even better.

Don't forget the fmic if you going for a big turbo.

A couple of years ago if I had a volvo I`d deffo had a forged engine built.Say £2,500 for 400hp is not alot of money

I was lucky to get them at that price

& they work fine with the TT

If only it was that simple, a few people on here have spent £2500 and not managed 400bhp.

No idea, they are not in at the moment, its running blues while I'm running it in, from what I have read on the TT forum, they will be good

Forgot to add, its worth upgrading the fuel pump and wiring

You can make it cheaper if you do all the work yourself - and quite a lot needs proper engineering works.

I am 80% through the process with my build project to install a GTX3071R garrett. Bearing in mind I spent over 1500 quid just getting the gearbox ready (not including the failures along the way) plus all the other supporting mods - stiffer ARBs better suspension etc. I think you can easily chew up 4K and probably more like 6K by the end.

500 rods
500 forged pistons
1300 rebuilt engine (bored, total overhaul, reworked head)
so 26 hundred gave me a bear block

200 for a worked s60R manifold
Add to that cost of the turbo ~1600 - there are cheaper but if you are going down this route why bother?
800 quid custom D/p with race cat.
170 actuator
150 Tial BOV

Then you're going to need a proper clutch

Injectors & a fuel pump - ???

custom map - ???

I think Frankie's estimate is wildly under estimated.

Probably much easier to buy an s60 2.4 t5 and remap it - 320bhp easy peasy.

Dave, I'll say it again, but im expecting 500bhp from your setup, IMO with a few hardware tweaks and a proper ignition map mine would reach that, but after a few years its time to move on to something at the other end of the weight spectrum :)

Don't take this the wrong way BB - Say what again - sorry but I must have missed the first time? 500 seems a bit unlikely to me.

TBH I'll be happy with anything over 400. Any tips you can give me would be appreciated - perhaps on another thread?

It cost me around £3400 but that included the cost of the worn lump, machine work and an 82mm Wiesco piston kit! All that before a new turbo has touched her. Some expensive lessons learnt there! Arrghhh. Hence still running a very nice little 15g until funds permit the next chapter! That said, if a 15g can pull that hard, I'm so looking forward to the next chapter!

what bottom ends are stronger than the 850 and will fit straight in? ive decided im aiming for about 340-350 bhp, I have an exhaust sorted with a straight edge and I have in my mind an 18t turbo but i want the bottom end to take the power

Wobbly Dave

Using a stock block from an 850 is no different until you reach much much later, namely 2004. The con rods are the limitation.

If budget is your problem then sell the 850 & buy the 2.4L t5 in either s60/v70 form from 2005 onwards. Remaps to 320 bhp easy - with no changes. If you were then to change the turbo & put some free flow mods & bigger FMIC - you'd be able to reach 340.

Otherwise you'll have to do what woody has done.

An 850 will make 300 ish with a 19T, race cat & a custom map. Getting 340 out of an 850 is no small undertaking.

mike 850
Monday 11th February 2013, 20:39
cool, definitely wanna keep the 850, i have had 2 s60s now much prefer the 850 plus its an ongoing project so budget isn't really a problem because it just means it'll take longer. is that 300 whp? on a previous 850 t5 i made 284 at the fly with a 304 rica, air filter and exhaust on std turbo. I think i might strip the block and get decent rods and do it properly

Wobbly Dave
Monday 11th February 2013, 20:43
Yes you can go that route - with standard pistons/forged rods.

BTW I had 300 whp with the 19T, standard rods.

Yes 320 at the fly. Custom APT map (from Sweden).

Making 20 bhp extra takes some doing.

Difference is quite a lot to my mind. To make 340 on stock internals is really on the limit. Some may disagree.

Also don't get too worked up on peak numbers. The shape & longevity of the torque curve is far more important as that is what will pin you to your seat.

i agree with you and to be honest im pulling figures out the air because id rather have more usable power. how do they do that map, do you tell them the mods or do you have it setup by them? I was looking at an 18t because I already have a straight face downpipe which apparently is less peaky than angled 19t? which i guess makes it a safer bet for rods

Wobbly Dave
Monday 11th February 2013, 21:15
I've had 4 different custom maps for my angled 19T and but the APT one - as many who have enjoyed 3rd gear in Betsy can atest, was unrelenting. Earlier maps had more torque up front but they were not as powerful all the way through.
