Hi

Oddly, this morning both my ABS Service Required and STC Service Required messages came up on the display and stayed there. The car is in the garage today for the new bits to be fitted so I've asked them to look at it, but I'm thinking it could be a loose connection or something and it's odd how it started this morning and both at the same time.

I'll post later when I find out more from the garage.

Regards

James

The STC and ABS are part of the same system. It's probably an ABS wire/connection on one of the hubs.

Thanks, well the garage are doing the brakes so hopefully they'll use some common sense and take a look at that for me.

Oh, you should see the car they've loaned me, it's a X plate Peugeot 306 with some serious steering issues. The wheel does a shimmy when the car goes around corners after it straightens up and also over rough or uneven roads, I'm going to tell them when I take it back. I'm glad it's not mine because it's horrible to drive and I'll be glad to give it back to them. Hopefully I'll have the T5 back tonight completely finished, or failing that they said they'll get as much done as possible and then anything else will have to be done another day as I wanted it back tonight so I don't have to drive in the snow to get it tomorrow. :D

Could be an ABS sensor, hopefully just a bit of crud (normal at the moment with all the salt on the road) if not there's a way to test them with a multimeter.

Have you been driving in the recent snow and ice? I have here in Norfolk and this morning both my traction control and ABS had thrown up messages. This is because for the past 2 days I have travelled about 20 miles, but I have put on about 40 miles on the clock cos of wheelspin. The car just threw a wobbler! I have plugged in and reset and all OK now......................until tomorrow!!

Thanks for that, I'll see what the garage say as well just incase they find something obvious. :B_thumb:

thats true, they come up on a rolling road as the rear wheels are not moving, but the fronts have- then go off by driving normally .

These came on again today despite the garage reconnecting everything. I think the problem is under the bonnet, oddly it started the other day after I'd sprayed degreaser around the PAS resevoir. I wonder if I got some overspray in an electrical connector, and I'm thinking this will be an MOT fail if the warning messages are showing on the dash?

I'll hook up my code reader tomorrow and see if it tells me anything, i.e. gives me any error codes.

ABS light will be:(
Yeah, get codes read and reset and fingers crossed. I plugged mine into my ViDA and it lit up like a Christmas tree!! Reset and all OK now. Sure it was the snow

Right, a quick update......

Today I did some experimenting, firstly I plugged in the OBD2 reader and there were no codes stores in the ECU so then I went under the bonnet and pulled the wire from the ABS/STC unit (that big round thing at the back of the engine bay on the drivers side), plugged in the code reader and turned the engine on. The lights still came on on the dash and no DTC's in the ECU. So I reconnected the wire......

Then, I went and pulled the 30A fuse from the fuse box under the bonnet (fuse 19) and read the codes again to find nothing stored and the dashlights still on.

So, either the ABS/DSTC system is knackered or as suggested by people above, there's some dirt or crud on some of the connections. Unfortunately that's going to mean jacking the car up, taking the wheels off and cleaning each connector, which then opens up the question....

Do I need a special tool for removing the connector or is it just a simple plug in system?

This problem is bothering me because it's an MOT failure if it's not fixed.

Regards

James

Hi James,
it might be worth getting to a garage with ViDA as I am sure there are codes that a generic OBD2 reader will not pick up. If there are some bespoke codes for Volvo, then you will only see them with ViDA.
I had the exact same lights on my car after some serious wheel spinning in the snow(I disabled the traction control) and wiped the faults with my ViDA. There were so many codes stored. It is now fine. Might cost you 20 quid but could save you a load of grief trying to trace a fault that ain't there............

How do I find a garage with ViDA?

Well, there are the main stealers, but possible ££££££££££. Ring em up first and ask to speak to a technician. I did that and was surprised at how much he was willing to talk and help me out. Ask how much to plug car in.
also, there must be a Volvo independent specialist near you. They will have all the gear. Again, ask how much to plug in.
And, quite a few members on here have Vida. Might be someone your neck of the woods.
Personally ViDA/DiCE is the best thing I have bought for a long time. It is amazing what it can do/change/tell you/fix/read/clear, etc. Belated Christmas pressie to yourself?!

Well I know there's some knocking around on fleabay for <£100 so that may have to go on my 'to buy' list on payday in February. :)

I've finally got some answers to my ABS/STC light problem having been to the Main Stealers this afternoon, where they plugged the car in to DICE and up came some results.

The initial scan brought up the following fault codes and explanations;

Page 1
20565

Page 2
20566

Page 3
20567

Page 4
20568

Page 5
20569

Page 6
20570

Page 7
20571

The Technician cleared all the faults away (some were old faults stored in the ECU from previous issues), and then took the car for a drive. Then he came back and plugged the car back in to DICE, and this was the only fault code that reappeared;

20572

So the reason my STC/ABS light is on it because my ABS/STC module is on the blink! Brilliant :(

The MOT is due in March so this is either a 'fix it or fake it' scenario, in other words I either get the problem fixed before the MOT or find away to keep those lights from coming on and then get the problem fixed as soon as possible (you know where I'm coming from there don't you!) ;)

Anyway, they also gave the car a 'health check' and could find no cause for my wheels clunking and knocking on full lock (I thought the problem maybe related in some way, but no). They agreed there is a transmission issue and I have to say on the way back from the Dealers the car seemed really noisey in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, much noisier than before I took it in! I'm going to phone a transmission speacialist tomorrow to talk about options.

Oh, and the bill from the Main Stealers....... You're itching to know what they chaged me, right? Absolutely, nothing! Yes, you read that correctly, they didn't charge me at all, not a penny!

The Technician brought the key back to the service reception and I awaited the bill, but the service guy handed me my car key back and said "You owe me nothing, you should pay for the diagnostic really but we'll just call it a free safety inspection today!" I stood there absolutely gobsmacked and thought, what's going on here, what's the catch!

I have to say though, it's the only car dealers I've seen without a sales desk, they are mainly a service centre now and employ about 5 or 6 staff in total. I also had a good chat with them about the Volvos and their weak and strong points but I'll cover that more in my Main Stealers thread later on.

Anyway, feedback and advice appreciated as always! ;)

Regards

James

Looks like you had a result with them looking at the codes under a 'free safety inspection' and not charging you.
Not so good is the possibility of the ABS unit needing replacement along with your transmission woes.

Yes, well now I have some answers, at least I know where to look for solutions. I will of course keep the forum updated, this could be useful for someone else soon!

Pi55er!! But at least you know now what it is.

Hmmmm. I would probably get it sorted mate. I have been doing this cheat on my old Shogun for a few years, but I only use it for going across fields with the dogs or pulling trailers full of firewood from my local farm. No dangers really. Your Volvo travels at far greater speeds than my Shogun and probably on busy roads. Have you got kids.............??

Anyway, they also gave the car a 'health check' and could find no cause for my wheels clunking and knocking on full lock

Another pi55er! What to do now?

Oh well. You had a small result there then!!
How much for a new ABS module? £9.99??:sheep:

I've just saved myself a fortune and brought a second hand unit off fleabay. It's definatley the right part because I've checked it against the print out from the Main Stealers and the picture matches, plus what's even better is that I've just read this website (see link below), stating the unit can be fitted independently from the ABS Pump meaning the car can still be driven, meaning that the brake fluid hasn't got to be drained and I can fit this part myself!

http://www.ecutesting.com/volvo/volvo_abs_pump/module_failure.html

I'm even happier at the price too, £25.99 including postage and the pump, the seller claims, has come off a 2002 2.4 petrol with onyl 64K on the clock. If this works, I'll have saved myself a fortune! I'll post a "How To" on fitting when I do it, it may come in handy for someone one day.

Oh, today I thought I'd phone the Main Stealers for a laugh and nearly fell off my seat. I got a quote for the part that is faulty on my car as diagnosed by (the other) dealers on Wednesday. The man on the parts desk over the phone said to me, "Are you sitting down?", I said, "Yes...", and then came the shock....

£1700 for the ABS Module!!!!! :shockedbi :nut:

Then he said, "There's 2 parts,...." and then gave me the price for the other bit....

£930 + VAT!! (£1116)

Potentially that would have been a bill of £2816 plus labour at £80 an hour, so easily £3000 to fix an ABS and STC warning light. Nuts...... :saythat: :bricks:

I was absolutely gob smacked but also quite relieved that I'd just picked up a £1700 part for £25.99 on ebay with a 30 day money back guarantee. They (the Stealers) said I may need a software update for £40 but I'd rather change the unit first then have a software update (if it needs it), as if the first one doesn't work then I may need it on a replacement unit anyway. In other words, change the part and get the software update done if it needs it instead of potentially having it done twice.

Ok, the parts should be here next week.... fingers crossed it sorts the problem out.

Oh if it fits and works then that's going to be one of those lucky moments. If it's incorrect then I'm sure I'll get my money back on it but I'm sure it will be ok as the listing says "fits all petrol models" and it's come from a P2 that's a similar age to mine.

I will be posting either a video or pictures and a write up when it a) arrives, and b) I get a dry day to go out and change it. :)

I had to chase the seller on ebay today to see if he had sent my ABS module I paid for a week ago. He said the courier had had problems this week and it will be with me tomorrow.... Translated that means, "Sorry, forgot to send it so I've put it in the post today!". (I'm not stupid!)

Assuming it arrives tomorrow (Friday), I'll try and fit it on Sunday (weather permitting) and failing that if not it will have to be next week. The MOT is due around the 20th so I'm really hoping this solves the issue.

I've fitted the 'repaired' unit, took it for a drive and unfortunatley the lights still illuminate once I exceed around 15mph! :wallbash:

I may have to have yet another trip to the main stealer to see if a reset is required. There is of course the possibility that the repair was never done or needed and therefore I've just sent spent £70 on nothing.... :(

Whatever happens, the MOT is on Wednesday so I've got to make sure the lights don't show which won't happen unless they take the car above 15mph. Taking it down like this will be a BIG gamble!

Shame about that James, hopefully the dealer will be able to do a reset, if not I advise you to park as close to the MOT station door as possible so they just have to creep it in lol

I had the same error message come up this weekend, jumped in the car Saturday to go for a spin and got ABS and DTS error message so connected my code reader and it came back as low speed check sensor reading, so reset this turned the engine off waited 1 min turned it on again then got dtsc temporarily off, so read the codes again but there was nothing there this time so drove for 5 mins safely making sure the brakes and spin control was working and it went off. Pulled up turned the engine off and waited 1 min again and this time when i turned it on there was no error and hasnt been since think i may have just had a bit of grime in the sensor or something luckily

does you code reader list any faults,if it only comes on above 15mph sounds like a wheel speed sensor ?.

Good thought however the diagnostics from the Main Stealer suggest otherwise - unless they're keeping something from me to make me go back and spend some more money!
