Im going to get one off ebay most likely, there is one currently on there that comes with everything, all the bolts, wiring etc, i think the actual fitting of the towbar is relatively straight forward, my main concern is the wiring. Do the V70's have a connector there so i can just plug and play so to speak?

Got one off Ebay from a company called Towequipe.

Its a detachable Westfalia for my Passat- quality product stamped up with VW part numbers. Cost me £140 :jaw:
Now thats cheap!

Paid a local auto electrical specialist £40 to do the electrics- didn't want to screw up my car! Instructions looked straight forward though.

Cost about half of what towbar specialists were quoting.

There are around 4 on ebay at the moment for the 850/v70, im interested in 2 of them, one is made by Brink (£52 last time i checked) and the other made by Witter, its the Witter one i really want, it comes with all the bolts and electrics, should hopefully get it for around £40-60 :)

I recently fitted a Witter towbar to mine. (www.towbarwarehouse.co.uk)
My car is a Phase 2 so yours may be different.

Bolting on the towbar itself was simplicity itself. The instructions recommended removing the rear bumper for better access, so I did, but even that was easy and, in hindsight, probably cost more time than it saved.

The wiring is something else though. The towbar came with a generic 7-pin socket but you're expected to splice it into the car's wiring loom yourself. Not good. My car got really upset when I tried that.
In the spare wheel well is a socket for Volvo's 7 OR 11 pin wiring harness which you can get from your dealer for about £14. Super simple .... BUUUUT ... on my Phase 2 car, the harness isn't activated until Volvo load the right bit of software, which cost me another £80. Grumble, grumble. Your P1 hopefully doesn't need that.
