Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has heard of other stories of Gearbox trouble, and I mean real trouble with the stock V70 T5.

After a week of 'Transmission Service Required' messages Volvo have, after 3 weeks of monkeying about, come back and said that the Gearbox on my car is totalled (i.e. Metal in the Oil, not pressurising yada yada yada)
and that I am looking at € 5k plus to put it right.

My dealer says they are putting in for a good will request but I'm not confident,
Anyone here have similar stories or any advice?

Frustrated T5 Lover...

Well first of all take it to a specialist - not a main stealer.

Then consider getting your box reconditioned or getting a second hand one from someone like Salvo.

Either way - you will be off the road for a while

€5k? 5000 Euro? Or £?

Either way, it's steep. Very steep?!

Umm, 5K sounds way too much, I had mine go belly up (850 T5) only cost me £1200 (Cash, saved the VAT) to get it fixed up, like a new box now....

You should shop arund a bit before letting the main dealer at it!!!

Yeah, £1200 - £1500 is the norm for a fully recon box inc. install!

For £5,000 I'd want them to throw in a brand new engine too!

A month ago, I was quoted £850 for a recon'd 'box including fitting & VAT by Gary's Gearboxes (or somesuch) in Twickenham 020 8607 9060

5k euros is way too much, Surely it would be cheaper for you to come over here to England and get a recon fitted?

Hi folks,

Thanks for your suggestions, I went ahead and had the new box fitted by Volvo main dealer, just because of the warranty issues with reco'd boxes. I am really disappointed by Volvo's approach which was basically - Tough! Buy a new gearbox.

There was another V70 T5 of similar age and mileage in the dealers at exactly the same time with the same issue, really a shame as I loved my T5. It's currently back in with them as it's driving like a Massey Ferguson since the new box went in, feels like it's lost about 100bhp, vibrations when between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm, way under powered, Turbo behaving erratically.. Not a happy chappie, and getting shut of it as soon as it's fixed up.

Was looking at New V70R but having been burnt by this one, going to settle for a 5.30D Beemer.

Cheers anyway...

Shame - he could have had mine old one for 600 quid

I somehow dont think this was a manual box!
Is it a Geartronic as gearbox failure on a manual dont normally happen on such a young vehicle.
