Hi Guys,

Just want to share this because i found out the hard/loooooooong way:

I have a 1997 Volvo 850, i have bought a usb odb2 cable (Elm 327) and a serial one. For the serial cable i had to search everywhere for a really old laptop with a serial connection, which i managed to borrow. Got hold of the VOL-FCR software but i still cant connect to the car! I noticed some people said you would be able to connect to the car with the ebay Serial cables, well you cant!

Im really stuck now

Hope people find this useful

Will,

How the hell else are you supposed to get the Service light and codes cleared. Go to the dealer? I was quoted £100 for a diagnostic session. Screw that!

Thanks Volvo

you can read the codes with this LINK (https://www.box.com/shared/oy63haaef2)

theirs a special sequence to resetting the service light, hold the trip reset button then turn the ignition on for example. Can't remember the exact thing but should be able to google it

You might need to switch some wires at the OBD port in order for the generic readers to work.
The K-line is not in the right places.
Now.... where did I put my schematics.

My January 1997 V70 T5 is OBD11 compliant.......i don`t think you can get much earlier than that??

Although 850 are not V70`s are!

I went to a local auto electrical (local to ME - LOL), it was £38 for a diagnostic read, printout and code clear. My garage always resets the service light as part of the 5k/10k Service schedule, its not itemised, and the bill is usually only £100 or so including incidental items.

I would keep looking for a good local side street Volvo specialist.

Thanks for the Replies guys, Was it the Elm 327 you used?

I cant get it to connect with the Volvo Software or the Diagnostic Freeware :(

You can build your own reader, bit more basic than hooked up to laptop. But it works.

Link here for it http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=46943

Here's mine. It works on my 96 850.

Yep later models do not link, unless you've got the proper software. My 1997 850 only even worked at the main dealer. I should try Dalhouse's code reader unit one day as it is specifically for Volvo's only

I'm using my old generic usb obd2 lead which I used to use on VAGCOM, BUT IT DOES WORK, if you were closer I could set it up for you

1997 looks like its a problem then, thanks for the info JUDGENINJA

Thanks for the offer Shepbomb

Maybe this is why the car was so cheap, the §§§§§§ knew 97 was a problem with odb ;)
