Ive finally ordered all the stuff for my '02 S60 T5 SE to go with my HIDs!

Here we go then:-

8x19" HEICO Volution V wheels

Tyres 235/35/19 - TBA (Waiting for an Ebay bargain to compensate for the cost of the wheels!)

HEICO front spolier flaps

OE Volvo rear spoiler + grey plastic body bits to be colour coded

WP Pro 6 pot 18" big brake kit with 360mm cross drilled discs

Koni FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) dampers with H&R springs

RICA Stage 2 - 19T turbo, downpipe, exhaust remap...340+ BHP

Oh yeah, Bluetooth Parrot and rear parking sensors ('cos Im c**p at reversing!)

Please dont ask the total cost 'cos I wont print it in case the wife stumbles accross this board! :remybussi

I can't wait, most of the stuff should be here next week. Just waiting on the downpipe from Adam at VT and the brake kit from Parts For Volvos which Ive been told will be up to 3 weeks.

I'll let you all know how I get on. :B_steerin

Be very careful fitting rear parking sensors that are not Volvo OEM/Fitted by Volvo. I would go as far as to say - DONT! ME7 can get really narked off.

You will not be disappointed with the Stage 2 - I can tell you that much!!

IMHO you only need crossed and drilled disks to prevent water fouling. Volvo brakes dont get wet enough to need the grooves? Standard size for the S60R is 330mm with 4 pot brembo calipers so why are you looking to go bigger?

After_Shock
Monday 3rd October 2005, 00:09
Dave if you have 19's why not have bigger discs and fancy grooved ones at that to show off behind them!

Grooved discs do help with the stopping power a bit and arent just their to get rid of any excess water, 360mm discs would look very nice though :B_steerin

I dont see any holes or grooves....
http://www.bigredvolvos.co.uk/images/v70R/rims.jpg

Sorry mate but I dont agree. Grooves reduce the friction surface and as such brake torque. Grooves are for water dispersal surely!?

This is just my opinion and I am not saying dont - based on my own experience I manage just fine on plain rotors.

I found this
http://www.hispecmotorsport.co.uk/discs.htm

I think it gives a fairly balanced view.

After_Shock

Dave I went for grooves purely for the looks plus they keep the discs slightly cooler.

So what if the R's have plain discs their not exactly the best braking system in the world, plus it would cost Volvo more to make the cars with grooved or drilled discs as opposed to plain.

Aston Martin and some of the other premium brands make them with grooved discs as standard then the likes of porsche and BM do the cars with drilled discs so they must be of some use!

I cant see how they would help water dispersion as theirs no veins or channels to send surface water into the grooves, plus their cant be any issues with water on discs if the R's just use the plain discs.

After_Shock
Monday 3rd October 2005, 07:45
Just read the Hi-Spec thing, probably copied and pasted off AP's site or something, as they say the grooves basically keep the discs cooler so help with stopping power so why not go for them? Plus they look better if your going for a none standard look which you wouldnt be but others might just personal choice really.

I am with you Aftershock they do look very good, but the EBC discs are not very good that i have on my car, they are ok for the odd brief blast and brake but for constant on off they are :pants:

Wasnt aware of the non OE parking sensor problems.....They're in and no issues so far....I'll keep you posted. :B_blite:

The drilled discs not only prevent water fauling but the main reason is to reduce latent heat build up druing hard use. Ive got them as factory fit on my Jag XKR are Ive never mananged to get them to fade yet :B_steerin

Ive gone for the biggest possible discs purely because when it comes to brakes, biggest is best and I'll be running more BHP than a stock R and I do use my brakes quite heavily! Only issue I havent resolved yet is the spare wheel which is a space saver and unlikely to fit anymore!...can of tyreweld maybe the only solution.

Wobbly Dave
Monday 3rd October 2005, 14:33
Just my opinion, my friend. Power increase is irrelevant to braking. Car weighs the same braking from 70mph weather you have 90bhp or 900 - forces involved for both machines will be the same. I do agree that the stock pads are not fantastic.

You are going to LOVE the brakes :remybussi i have a set of the 336x30 6 pots on my 850, friggn amazing!!!Dont worry about the drilling 's the rotors are cast very few people cast holes, Porsche are the only others i know of ;).Very smart bits of kit the WP stuff! money well spent my man.Standard size discs (302,280) and whatever pads will not even come close, the cost will be long forgotton after you have stood on them at 100plus several times, and every time you walk back to your car and see them behind the wheels ;)

:slap: Sorry i may be being stupid here but what has it got to do with the ME7, my old man has an aftermarket set fitted on his Saab & the nearest it gets to involving the engine is taking a positive feed off the reversing lights so it knows when to activate the system?

The remap wouldnt work properly, interfered with the knock sensors and generally caused havoc. The reversing sensors involved were cheapo £99 halford jobs. It is not so simple these days to integrate them into a complex car, with modern electronics.

still sounds very odd to me, especially as the reverse sensors tend to be at the rear of the car & engine normally at the front lol (did the car have the sensors on before the remap, & was how was the car then?)

I am calm. My motives are purely altruistic. I just wanna make sure peeps are aware that there are risks involved.

In the case of the V70 I have in mind, the parking sensors obviously interferred with the sensor voltages in other parts of the car - other than that I couldnt say - I didnt fix it.

Oh no, near disaster has struck! :jaw:

HEICO wheels arrived yesterday and tyres arrived today so off I went merrily to the tyre place to have them fitted.

Unfortunately, some chimp with King Kong strength had previously tightened the front wheel nuts. Managed to to get one side off and fitted the new wheels Ok...just.

went to remove the divers side front and.....snap, the original Volvo locking wheel nut sheared :slap:

The car as we speak is still laid up in the tyre bay with 2 HEICO 19" wheels on one side stuck on with a locking wheel nuts that I have no key for and the 2 original Tethys on the other side that cant be removed either!!!!...HELP!

We tried for 3 hours to get the b****r off to no avail.

Volvo dont supply the keys by themselves just to add insult and the locker is made of some super strength steel so you cant just knock a socket on and loosen it.

Anyone any experience with getting lockers off without damaging the rims?

lol, sorry about my laughing, but i had the same thing happen to me!, some chimps at the tyre place with that air gun thing, tighted them up to tight, and i mean really tight!

you have a couple of options, you can get a locking wheel nut thing from volvo if you have the code number for it, i couldn't find this number in my docs that claim with car

the way my tyre place got them off is, you can get a special set of reverse thread sockets, which has a very gentle curves inside it, they are made out of very hard metal

they hammer the socket on, then with alot of hardwork undo the locking nut, sometimes the socket would slip, but they justed hammered back on again until it did grip, but after 30mins, job done all off.

since that day, i dont let any tyre place tighten the nuts up with anything else apart from a handtool!

The ribbon in the key on my locking wheel nuts sheared on the 850 (it's a common problem). Used the socket thing as above with an opposite thread inside to grip the wheel nut (makes an anticlockwise thread on it) - came off very easy - though the bolts were not in particularly tight.

In the wall, shoulder or the floor of the tyre? Most times you can get them patched up - my local place does them for about a tenner.

I think its about an inch from the corner on the first set of tread blocks (the shoulder?).

From past experience (and I can tell you there have been a few :slap: ), it'll have to be sent off for specialist repair rather than a quick patch up job...I'll know a bit more later.

Let us know what you think of the Koni FSD's. The S60 is definetely under damped but I can't decide whether I should go for Koni Sports Adjustables or Koni FSD's. I've got Koni Sports adjustable's on my Saab 9-5 and they are fantastic.

aeroresh
Saturday 29th October 2005, 15:04
I had Koni adjustables on my 9-5 too, but I found them just that little bit too stiff for the chassis which wasnt the most rigid!

Brakes and suspension have arrived, just need to get them fitted once the car comes back from VT...long story but they've had it a couple of days to do the 19T conversion but Hamish told me this morning that my ETM is crackered :slap: ...there goes £600!

Actually I may ask VT to fit the brakes and suspension whilst its in...It will be job done then! :B_steerin

Simon
Saturday 29th October 2005, 15:44
Interesting...

My 9-5 with the Koni Sports adjustables on the softest setting and lowered springs is much nimbler than my S60 with Eibach springs and standard dampers even though the 9-5 weighs about 100lbs more than the S60.

At the same time I would say the S60 in it's current state is stiffer i.e. less forgiving over bumps and pot holes. I wouldn't want the S60 to be any stiffer which is the main reason I am undecided between the Koni Sports and FSD's...

Those WP Pro discs are big aren't they! :shockedbi

aeroresh
Saturday 29th October 2005, 17:40
If I remember correctly I had my Konis set on about level 3 so not the softest, which may account for the difference.

I know alot of people will say:-

:worthless

so I'll take some piccies hopefully by the end of the week once the suspension and brakes are fitted.

Ive also got some carbon fibre door trims to replace the fake wood ones to fit yet too...oh, and a replacement for the well-worn spaceball gearknob. I'll probably call it a day then and actually get round to driving it! :B_steerin

aeroresh
Saturday 19th November 2005, 16:35
It's back and Im well chuffed!

19T gives the car real guts from the bottom right up to the top end...its quite easy to spin the wheels in third if you want, even in the dry! However, its been mapped so the power is delivered alot more linear than before...this is essential as first and second gears would be absolutely useless due to traction issues.

As some of you are aware my car has had its fair share of problems, in fact Adam and Hamish had the car for over 3 weeks trying to get it right. A couple of sensors and a new ETM later its just about sorted. Peak power is 281 BHP at the wheels (about 330BHP at the crank) running only 1.1 Bar. Maybe a bit more to come with some more tweaking! New stainless exhaust custom made for VT is beefy if a little loud for my tastes, although the sound is amazing.

WP Pro Brakes are superb, they are 6 piston calipers with 360mm discs...No fading here!..My only gripe about them is they are a bit noisy.

Suspension is KONI FSDs with Eibach springs. Ride is actually better than stock even with 19" HEICO Volution V rims. Only stiffens up when you go round bends.

Outside, its as you see... HEICO 19" Volution wheels with Goodyear Eagle 235/35/19 tyres. They're dead expensive but wont knacker your handling or ride up even with stock suspension. No rubbing either. Ive also added HEICO front spoiler flaps and OE rear spoiler then had the lot colour coded.

Inside, Ive got rid of the wood for some carbon fibre trims (hand made using that Foliatek stuff!). I may get rid of the space ball soon in favour of a MOMO item as its a bit worn.

Overall its like a completely different car...Its a Beast! :firedevil

I was told to expect something in the region of 300 BHP at the wheels. The fact that mine produces only 280 is down to my particular vehicle being exceptionally sensitive to tuning and would only allow 1.1Bar boost to be run. A bit more time on the dyno may see figures pushing 290 or so but at the end of the day, every car is different and it'll only produce what its going to.

However, if you take away the headline figures and look at the way the power and torque is produced compared with the Stage I, its like night and day....Its silly fast!

Adam, if hes around, may be able to give a better answer but Im more than happy with the results...for now!...Mmmm, Stage III! :B_steerin

The sensors were from a local Car audio place and had them fitted at the same time as a Bluetooth Parrot, so some of the fittng cost was lost.

Sensors themselves only cost about £30 for the kit, but you have to colour code them yourself.

Estimate on about £100 fitting unless DIY.

They're not anti tuning. Some just take a lot longer to custom map than others. Naresh's wasn't helped by the fact that his intake temp sensor was faulty which had us stumped for a while until we found the fault. Then we basically had to start the remapping from scratch again. Just one of those things! Plus, we were aiming for as linear a power curve as possible to give the best driveability.

I had some Koni FSD's fitted to my car today together with some Poly Front Wishbone bushes and my first impressions are very very good. The car definetely feels smoother and more composed, especially in high speed bends giving more you more confidence in the cars road holding ability, which it didn't do at all in standard trim.. TBH I think the standard suspension set up on the T5 is terrible for a 'sports' model.
