when i press the air con on button i hear no noise, or see a fluctuation in the revs, if the system is totally empty of gas would it still try to work as normal? as kwikfit are doing their guaranteed air con service for £50 again, could do with air con for my holiday

No there is a pressure switch which will say no to it.

When did you last use it as if it's low on gas it will still work but not as well as it should, but if it looses to much gas it will just stop working so not to kill the compressor.

It's annoying when you get frost on the outside of the windscreen tho, you gotta use the wipers to clear it off :D

I would guess mate that they would conduct a pressure check on the system first. If it shows a leak you could be §§§§§§ed. The garage should not charge straight away as there are major environmental issues with dumping gas out.

The machine works a little like this...
Suck all the old gas and oil out,
Vacuum test - if it fails, the machine stops there and that's the end of it.
If it passes, the machine cleans the system and leak-checks it. if it fails the leak check, it stops and again, that's it.
Then fills the system with coolant and oil and prints a readout of what came out and what went in.
Mine had only half the correct amount of refrigerant - about 500g.
Even if there's a fault, it often doesn't cost much to fix - my mate's P2 V70 had a perforated A/C rad and to have it changed and a regas cost him £235 all-in.

The 850's are known for evaporator problems. I think most of them left the factory without Cabin/Pollen filter fitted, this allowed leaves and other debris to drop into the fan and then get mushed up and propelled towards the evaporator. With the evaporator being constantly wet when the air con was in use, the debris would stick to it and over the years would eventually rot the aluminum.

Whoever regasses the system, if they have a 'sniifer' device, make sure they stick it in the dash vents to detect if the evaporators leaking.

It's probably a good idea to buy the retrofit volvo cabin filter, I think they're only £20 + the cost of the filter and is simply fitted under the scuttle panel on the passenger side.

If anyone's interested, the retro fit pollen filter tray part number is 9488526. PartsforVolvos have them.
