Get a code reader on it if you can mate, if you can. The fan kicking in for no reason usually means something's wrong, or at least it thinks something's wrong and it's trying to protect itself. Has it been doing anything weird - misfiring or juddering, lights on the dash?

It's a brave man who chooses ex-plod as their first foray into Volvo ownership lol (I should know) what year is it?

Feel free to join the ex-plod register :D

Oooh, 57 plate? nice :)
If the lambda sensor is due to be changed then that could explain it. It's the sort of thing that would make the car panic and trigger the fan (mine does it when I blow a boost pipe).

See if you can get a reader on it but it's probably the sensor.

Well I saw all the others with their T5R, 850R registers, I thought it was time to have a more exclusive register lol...

HLM is your best bet for a remap - £300 and a before and after roller session.
As for exhaust, that's more down to preference. Ferrita sound the best on these engines imho but it's all about what you want. Head to youtube and listen to a few tuned Volvos and see what takes your fancy.
