The mileage isn't that high, have you had the codes read?

Without seeing the car it's impossible to make accurate suggestions but if you want my advise then start with an engine flush followed by an oil change. You never know, that might sort out you noisy hydraulic lifters.

The warning triangle that comes on may be low brake fluid due to heavily worn brakes. For the record, it would have thrown a fault code for that so get the codes read.

Check coolant level and specific gravity. If it's weak then it will indicate the previous owner has been topping up. Most Joe public wouldn't think of using a 50/50 mix to top up so the specific gravity will be low. Especially as the car has FSH, FVSH would have been better!!
If the gravity is low then suspect a leak. This might be the cause of your white smoke under load....the beginning of the end.

Difficulty start when hot OR cold usually indicates worn pump, worn injectors or possibly and more commonly a sticking EGR valve.
Again, fault codes will indicate this. DOn't bother to clean, it's fruitless and will never be 100% right. If it is the EGR then replace it.

Hope that helps, good luck.

4: brake light bulb out

For the rest, get the codes read and give it a good service. Check for intercooler leaks, they're famous for intercoolers.

Ok I thought my s80 is d5 but it is the earlier model wiv 2.5 vw engine. So the starting problems solved by setting up the fuel pump timing as was done wrong when some one changed all the belts less than 200miles ago.Now she starts from turn of the key but still smokie as I`ve heard these r very fassy on timing. In my timing autodata there is no s80 0r s/v70 2.5 belt set up so I used a vw set up using a dial gauge and moved it 55m from dead poin but I`ve red in some cases u have to go as far as 70mm.As I said starts on the button now but smokei. If anyone has set fuel pump timing on one of these plz let me know how much did u move pump pulley.

i would think the best thing to do is speak to a VW tech or specialist.
