Ok, so I've had the exhaust fitted now.

First impressions are sounds wise its spot on. Subtle enough not to wake the neighbours at stupid o'clock in the morning yet give it a bit of beans and she sings a lovely note. At motorway cruising speeds you barely even notice its on there which is perfect.

The only part i'm still not 100% sure about is the tailpipes. I might consider getting one of the custom exhaust companies to possibly see if they can swap the tips for a pair that more closely resemble the standard slash style pipes. Or figure out a way of darkening or painting the current ones to match the wheels and badges.

Thank you.

To be honest she is pretty much how I want to keep her now. Might possibly go for a RICA or MTE remap at some point and possibly a Ferrita DP but not just yet.

Dark silver manifold paint mate, that'll bring it near enough the same colour as the wheels.

Looking good.

Isn't there a carbon cowl you can get to fit to the bumper round the pipes?
I'll see if I can find it...

Looking good mate, TBH I prefer the tailpipes to the slash cut pipes. Can't wait to hear it on Sunday. :)

I think the carbon bit only fits the earlier 'R's. I might have to investigate the manifold paint though. Thanks for that :-)

Superb Pictures.

I am still on the look out for my exhaust and take in all these posts.

I'm really impressed with the sound.

Some might say its a bit too quiet, and that it should roar like a lion with a sore head, but all I know is it won't annoy the neighbours :-) (Unless I floor it down to the bottom of the road)

I have the ferrita down pipe and cat back with a MTE map. :) as you have found out it sounds good. Quiet when needed, no drone at motorway speeds and a sporty sound when giving it some.

I am happy with the MTE map. You will have to have the down pipe to get the most out of it. Unfortunately you will have to put both on together. If you just do the down pipe it will bring the EML because less back pressure and it will boost a little higher. If you just put the map on, you won't get the full Benifit from the map.
What year is your car? Mine does not have Volvo spaced out like yours.

Hi my car is a MY54 car. I've recently changed the badges from stock chrome and bought the later volvo badge from ebay as I prefer it spaced out. Cost me £20 to have them all painted which I thought was bargain.

As for the remap yeah I know to get the full benefit you need to to the down pipe on as well. You can with the rica build the map in stages depending on your spec. IE replacement element filter and cat-back is first stage then add the DP for the next stage.

I think I'll run it othe Cat back for a bit till I get used to it then go for the DP and Remap.

Got to agree sharkey I'm not sure about the tail pipes, I dont like haw far over to the left Volvo have put the exits on these cars and I think it makes those pipes look funny.

I don't know if the system is adjustable in the sense of moving the tails forward a bit. I'm seriously thinking about trying a custom exhaust centre to see if they can change them. Just worried they might butcher it. I love the look of the pipes on LeeT5s V70R. He had the system made and the tails look stock but are slightly bigger.

It sounds like it lol, I thought you actually meant you where just getting an off the shelf bolt on pipe, the welded one will look better.

God no, I want it to look like its part of the original system. That way then I get the best of both worlds. The sound of the Ferrita and keep the stock look. Just hope they make the tails in the same size as the Ferrita ones.

UPDATE:

Ok so i've made my mind up. June 9th the car is going on a little journey to have some exhaust surgery. Going to take a trip to Fast Road Conversions to have the exhaust tips on the Ferrita removed and replaced with stock style slash cut tips and then I'll be 100% happy.

Sharkey R
Friday 18th May 2012, 19:42
Yeah definitely. Everything I've done so far to the car I've really liked but when I saw the exhaust after it was fitted I knew straight away I wasn't happy. All the research i'd done into the sound of different exhausts paid off because it sounds just right for what I want and need. But its just the look. It just doesn't look right. When I saw LeeT5s pics of his V70 R I knew that the only one to get was the stock look but i'd already ordered the Ferrita. Although there are places closer to where I live that do custom stuff, the review Lee gave on FRC was enough to make me contact them. Just hope it all goes to plan in the end.

I quite like it, but it does stand out a bit I would almost expect there to be a matching one on the opposite side.

It looks horrid under Neath the car, you used to look under and not see anything all you see now is the exhaust pipes coming from the right of the car bit like when our exhaust brackets broken and it's hanging. Think it's spoilt it now.

Sharkey R
Saturday 19th May 2012, 18:22
It's not that bad, it's just more noticeable cause its a tad shiny plus you've got the bracket that shows too. Another reason I've decided against lowering it because apparently if you clout the bracket it can smash into the prop and do some proper damage.

Sharkey R
Saturday 19th May 2012, 18:23
I'll do a few pics tomorrow from low down behind the car so you can see the fitting.

Harvey
Saturday 19th May 2012, 18:30
Yes you hit the centre box up bend the prop shaft that a nice big bill, have you removed the centre bracket that goes under the exhaust that looks like it does nothing ,I was told that it's there to stop the exhaust moving if you have a big shunt,I seen a number of people fitting a stainless cable where the bracket was to keep it in place.

Sharkey R
Saturday 19th May 2012, 18:43
I've not got under and had a proper look. The car was off the ramps before I saw it after it was fitted. If that's the case though when it goes into FRC I'll see if they can remove it and do that then. I still don't fancy lowering it. It looks like it sits a little high at the back but I kinda like the slightly sloped stance anyway.

Not heard that before! Mines lowered and if it scrapes (i'm normally going dead slow if i think it will) then it's always on the mid section. It would never touch the prop, not on mine anyway, cos FRC's made the exhaust in such a way that it routes away from the prop slightly. You would have to be driving like an idiot and bottom the car out real bad to do any lasting damage.
generally speaking clearance is fine. Obviously the first thing i did was remove the center bracket anyway. It scraped even before i lowered it!

Hi here are some photos that some R owners have done

Simple cable mod nice and cheep note center box missing.
http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r499/harveysr/s60rcable.jpg[/IMG]

This is the rain squeal bracket this is a Volvo fix it holds the exhaust away from the prop shaft when it bends with snow/rain e.g it uses the same bolt holes as the factory bracket
[/IMG]http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r499/harveysr/rainsqueal.jpg[/IMG]

This is what is on the car as stock most have been removed by now with any luck as this is what will do all the damage it gets bent into pipe then pipe hits prop and can bent it if unlucky.

I might get FRC to have a look at these pics and see if they can do a simple bracket mod. If its a cheap fix than can save a lot of money in the event of catching it on a ramp etc its worth it.

Sharkey, i wouldn't bother. I removed my bracket in the first week of ownership. It is a recognised mod at the Dealer and you can buy the new large oddly shaped washers that replace the bracket. They are needed to prevent the heat shield from sagging.

The bracket does nothing.

When i had FRC build my exhaust they designed the middle section of exhaust to bend away from the prop slightly and importantly the rear Haldex ECU...

See pic below:

Finally got the look and the sound I wanted thanks to Charlwood Volvo for fitting the Ferrita and then Fast Road Conversions in Ashford Kent for customising the tailpipes.

Can't praise FRC enough for the time and attention to detail they put in to their work. The guys were very patient and listened to exactly what I wanted and certainly came up with the goods. Excellent job. Highly Recommended.
