Fuel flap has broken hinge, and locking pin not engaging

Hello all,

My newly acquired PH2 V70 has a broken fuel flap, in that the plastic part that the spring should sit in is broken meaning it has no tention to keep it shut, additionally, the locking pin no longer engages into the fuel flap when it is pushed shut.

It's going in for a full service soon, so will ask them to look at these, just wondered how major a job it will be, and if it is a common issue.....?

Hi new hinge is about £8 on eBay very easy to fit ,just push the 4 pins in to remove the old one then on new one just hold new hinge to the holes in body then push the 4 pins in .
Re locking have a look behind the trim in boot to see still plugged in to the loom there is a manual handle as well.
Also it only locks after 2mins you lock up the car re refuelling delay.

mine's closer to 10 mins mate but the delay is the important bit. lock it then about 20 seconds after, the deadlocks will go, then sit and wait - you'll hear the fuel flap lock.

So theres a delay? I just noticed mine didnt work, I will look into the delay. Im sure on the older ones it was instant

Thankyou very much Harvey, I now see a large range of hinges on ebay - I assume they are all much of a muchness?

I think I understand what you mean re the pins, but one question, you say to puch them into remove the broken bracket, but then how can you push them in again to fit the new one, would I not need to pull them out with pliers or something?

That two minute rule could be the problem as well perhaps - so even after you lock the doors, the fuel flap would not lock for two minutes?

Hi, the replacement hinge will have four plastic pins moulded onto the outside edge, you just need to push these down through the holes into the body of the hinge. Most eBay photos won't show them, but they are definitely there.

Yep, the new hinge comes with the pins and does only take a few mins to put back on. I got mine from Rufe on here, can't remeber how much though.

I'm half wondering if infact the lock is not working, if this might be because the spring is broken, and hence the flap cannot be in the right position for the pin to engage.

If it ever stops raining over the weekend I will have a looksee.

I used the plastic springy thing that connects the fuel cap to the filler door. If you twist it a particular way, it pulls the door shut :)

When you receive the new one the pins will be sticking out just line up with holes in body push hinge onto panel then push pins in until level with the rest of hinge.
To remove old hinge just tap pins in can be a bit hard to move by hand use a small pin like thing and a small tapper to hit the pins in ,which will just fall into the panel.

I've done two before, and will be doing a third tomorrow. They're fiddly, but relatively straightforward to do.

just to update, came home today and the fuel flap was indeed locked, so that's a result, and hopefully with the hinge ordered my issues will be gone for the time being.

Thanks Harvey, so you tap the existing pins through the panel, and remove them from inside the boot I guess?

That certainly sounds fairly straightforward - might try and get the broken one removed this weekend, ready to accept the new one next week.

Id wait till you have the replacement, you dont want some little scumbag nicking your fuel lol.
When you punch the pins out, theyll disappear into the cavity between the wing and arch panels.

There is a 10min delay set on the fuel flap locking as standard. My S60 was in at RT and I asked them to plug the car in, update all software and also run through all the options on the phone with me. Adjusting the time on the fuel flap lock was one of the options. I left it at 10 mins though.

Fitted this successfully yesterday, took a bit longer than expected, as didn't realise how delicately the pins were attached to the hinge, as a couple pinged off as I tried to tap them home - luckily my girlfriend managed to refit them, and it took no time to tap home.

My tip would be to push the pins the majority of the way through the hinge before starting to fit it - easy enough to puch back through a bit if you go to far, and start expanding the 'plug' as it were.
