Well I had an itchy eBay finger that needed to be scratched and subsequently I bought this 1994 960 last week and picked the old girl up today.

Was a 400mile round trip to collect it and she drove faultlessly on the way home. Cruise control at 70mph and away we go.

Shes a 2.5 24V manual with M90 box, CD spec with all the toys and only 124k on the clock with some history.

Initial plans.....pfft who knows!? I was going to run it for summer then strip it for spares but now Im thinking its too good for that and I might run it then sell it on or run it and then T5 it.

Heres a mixture of pics from the eBay auction and my driveway once we got home.

Pub lunch, next to my mates Golf which we went down in and was backup vehicle should anything go wrong:

The interior is really good apart from the doorcards have the old 900 series wrinkles along the top and the drivers side electric seat mechanism has fallen apart. It still works but its all open and broken.

So this is the new project you needed room for lol. Lovely motor mate. I love the sheer size and presence of the things. And as for T5 ing it, you've basically got a n/a T6 block there... Need i say more? ;)

I need room because I also bought a Peugeot 106 Quiksilver this weekend!

The 960 has some proper road presence looming up the outside lane of the M1. I did think about a T6 but finding a T6 engine cheap isnt going to be easy but I do practically have everything there that I need especialyl because its already got the M90 gearbox thats such a ballache to find.

t6 engines are cheap mate because all the s80 t6s are nackered because of electrics and gearbox problems mate.

Just outside Kidderminster where it seems to have spent a good chunk of its life. I was amazed to find a leaflet for Eden Camp World War 2 museum in the glovebox which is ironic as thats only 20miles from me so its definitely been up this neck of the woods recently.

TEMPTED!!!!! Wonder how hard it'd be to fit......

Thanks! Shes a good honest bus. Im seriously thinking about running it until the MOT runs out in August then putting her in storage and doing a turbo conversion once the 255 T5 is finished.

Shes too good to break.

Today I fitted a new rear numberplate and started to de-badge the tailgate then got bored and I decided I would try and prove a theory amongst my mates. Do Galaxies fit a 960 even though the offset is for FWD. The answer......no.

The fronts are fine but the rears just touch the arch liners under suspension travel due to the soggy suspension. With the arch linders removed/some arch rolling it would all be gravy. DAMN 960's AND THEIR STUPID SOGGY SUSPENSION!

It does look ace I think though...

The car needs to be lower but its IRS with a stupid composite leaf spring setup. The most stupidest and softest setup in the world...bar none! Lowering them is a right bitch :(

Yeah that's a feature of the later 960's unfortunatley... But then it's not the sort of car that you'd instantly put at the top of a list of cars for lowering either I guess. Perhaps if you were really interested you could convert to the earlier setup or a 940?

The rear ends the problem on them. The stupid composite spring and shock setup is useless. It can be converted to coilovers but its a huge cost.

I do love them wheels on it but they dont really fit due to the 960's FWD offset and the galaxies are destined for my 240. Ideally I'd like a set of Volans with tyres to go on the old bus. :)

They aren't Smithy's old wheels are they?

Yep they are Smithys old wheels. They are eventually going to go on my 240 T5 when its finished but in the meantime they are sat tucked up safely in my workshop and I thought I'd try them on the 960 to see if they fit.

If the suspension wasnt so soggy they would be fine but the back ends that soft and wallowy that the arch liners touch the edge of the wheel with any weight in the back. The fronts have bags of room.

Thought I recognised them.. Strange how they fitted Smithy's 940 ok but not the 960. Perhaps the 960 has a wider rear track with the IRS?

The 960 uses a FWD offset like the 850's unlike the 940's RWD offset. A set of Volans would fit perfectly with no issues at all but the Galaxies dont because of their RWD offset. Stupid isnt it!

It depends how I get on with it. Im already missing the T4 :(
