Hers the story so far of my 98 v70t5 cd

Just finished the paintjob on my v70t5, i took her off the road some while back and left her at work to do a full body resto. my car was a pocket money s*itebox and to be fair drove nice, good power etc but the bodywork was cained. accident damage, rust (yes a volvo can rust lol) and 13years of abuse. ive been playing around at work with tricks in the paint, tinting laquer and stuff but cant really play aroud too much on customers cars lol. heres some pics of the before, repair, prep and paint.........

Great response guys, thankyou very much. Will post some more pictures at the weekend, have done some custom touches with front and rear lights which were easy but mega effective, ive also just finished a custom splitter for the v70 r.

Its been a labour of love and many times i have thought about throwing in the towel. My car was destined for the crusher before i bought it, and i did contemplate sending it there halfway through, but i feel that after lavishing all this time and work the car will repay me with many years of faithful service (it owes me it, lol). It will also be priceless when my guvnors 50k merc wont go as well or look as good as my sub 2k ovlov brick, lol.

OMG....that looks so gorgeous. I love that colour.

All the work and effort that has gone into the car is clear to see in the fantastic results that you have achieved.

Seeing your pic's makes me a tad jealous, as I have a car covered in parking and rugby ball dents, swirls, scratches and the clear coat lifting on the bonnet.

I want to get my car looking pristine again, and so, not knowing much about car painting and preparation, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions that I have?

Once you had identified all the dents on the body, did you panel beat them out with a hammer and dolly and then apply filler, or just fill and sand back?

Is the epoxy a binding agent and filler/primer?

What exactly is the “pearl twist”, the “tinted clear coat” and “the pearl tvr laquer”?

What is a “mat”?

Sorry for all the questions, but I find all of this a tad confusing and slightly mind boggling.

Anyway, keep up the great work and I will be very keen to see the next batch of pic's of your progress.

hey mate, as many of the dents that i could get to the back of were dressed out with panel hammer and dolly, some others you make bare metal at the lowest point of the dent then use a sort of spear on a welder to spot weld it to the car and then pull it out, if the metal has high spots either side of gouge type creases u need to used a metal file surform to file off the high spots. on v70 front wings there are bulges from the pressing of the original panel and i got rid of these also. sure you can "lob up" dents with filler but in 5 years time it wont looks so gud. also noted is that the front doors have a natural bow in them, volvos arent arrow straight anyway but im fussy so skimmed up little bits here and there to get the car as straight as im physically capable of. bumpers and skirts were cracked on my car so were laminated up with fibreglass sheeting on the back and filled over the top. the trick with all panel beating is to block everything, just sandpaper in the hand is a big no no.

these were the custom lights i have made for my car. the headlight glass and indicators looked "too white" for my taste but i dont like any of the aftermarket parts i have seen to date. the rear lights also werent to my taste so set about making my own. you start by using a water based degreaser and a trizact pad ( a 3000 grade polishing disc/pad) and lightly rub this over the surface to give a key up.

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010923.jpg
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010922.jpg

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010918.jpg

i also did this with the rears and then masked out the "clear" sections and papered over the rest of the lights.

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010838.jpg
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010844.jpg

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010924.jpg

then you mix laquer with black base coat, i used bmw sapphire black 2008, at a rate of 50% before you add the hardener ( you can mix anything up to 50% to get the tint level you want. you can tint two pack laquer any colour you wish) lay two coats over the desired tinted areas

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010925.jpg
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010929.jpg

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x340/gavt5/P1010927.jpg

you then wait for that to flash off (partially dry but still soft) and spray over some clear laquer. in the case of rear lights care fully remove all surrounding masking from the lights but do not for christs sake touch the grey wet laquer. then as the unsprayed parts were already trizactd you spray over the top with clear coat.

bake in the oven at 60'c then "voila".

simple, cheap, effective, different.

the headlights are being re-assembled with brighter beams (hid) and will have a look much like the new audi tt etc, grey tinted headlights. also as the lights only need to pass a brightness test when on, they are 100% legal.

more project updates to follow with custom splitter salvaged from the farbio scrap parts bin, re-worked rear spoiler and custom gauge pods.

ive also taken the opportunity to fit a bigger intercooler whilst my car is dismantled. i got hold of a THS 3 inch core item from a senoir member on another volvo forum. as luck would have it, my air con condensers had it and the air con rad was accident damage so i removed the air-con system from my car and my god did it make installation simpler. secondly i now have uninterupted airflow to the intercooler which will be far better in the ACT stakes.

thankyou for your comments, i am pleased with progress thus far but its nice that other people like your work too because it tends to be a unbiased opinion. i had a vision when i first saw the car of what it could be when done, and i drew a picture of what i had in my head. i find when doing a car like this where you can change your mind a million times, go back to ure original 'vision' and then you'll stay on track to achieving what you set out to do. many times i have seen projects that are finished and they dont turn out as originally invisaged.
cant wait to drive her, it taken far longer than originally thought, gone too far now to do anything else other than persevere with that image in my head i had at the start of the year when i first saw her.:car-smiley-031:

im happy with most of it, especially the splitter, i would say that the fogs look good switched on but not so great off. they were supposed to be yellow, not lime green lol so ill either redo them or how bout this for an idea, make a couple of covers using the glass as a mould and then vacuum form some acrylic over them. paint them body colour and theyll be stoneguards as well. i will play around with this, but overall happy with progress thus far. im on a week off now so can get some rest from her and look at her with fresh eyes next week. more updates soon. Decided not to tint after seeing pictures of tinted 850/70 and think it suits light coloured cars. Instead i will concentrate on sorting the cream leather so it looks good through the glass rather than hide it away. I've picked up a rough volan and will try a dark gold finish with a fine red rim. Maybe it will be a bit fresher looking and give a different angle on a legendary wheel. Will keep you posted, keep the ideas and feedback coming guys....much apreciated. Gav

next on the fit up list is to fit my gloss black mudflaps all round, mouldings, roof gutter trims and rivet in the sh*tshields. then sort the interior out (still dismantled), customise interior, then fix a arb link that's knackered, fit the 6 pot brakes, fit the methanol inj, fit the new specced turbo and downpipe/race cat, fit the nitrous (oh yes!), new carbon induction box, rebored inlet and throttle body, bailey breather, blitz boost controller and 4bar fpr and 470cc injectors, then remap it and see what i end up with.

lots still to do, maybe on the road for new year??????

hi toplights, had a busy few weeks work is manic so havent had much time on the old bus, however had a spending spree on her so sort of progress but just in the parts gathering stage. Decided that the 468cc injectors and 19t wont be man enough so have revised the spec. as we speak the head is off and will be ported and polished with bigger valves from mikael petterson racing, i have a twin scroll td05 big 16g going on and am hunting for 550cc high impedance injectors. got a deal going with mike quaife to get a nice slipper in the box and 400 crank bhp is the new target, the bottom end will get forged rods, new piston rings and of course the block will be honed. more than likely i wont get back on her until new year as we have to all be working flat out to get customers cars back to them before xmas, but im doing some r&d on compression ratio's and cam timing with my engine bloke to see where gains could be made, will keep this thread updated as the 2nd phase of the rebuild begins, POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yep, it hasnt been a terribly productive couple of months on this car. some of my other projects drew my attention (read money) for a while but now have the funds to make my visions a reality.
i watched as a boy the btcc 94/95 and always wanted a volvo estate from a young age (my dad always had them 1800es,245,240x3,740,940 and still got a mint 25k 240 torslanda) so maybe that helped. a family friend had a gul yellow 850t5r estate that i got taken home from school in a few times and back then aged 10ish i promised when i grew up id have 1. ok a olive v70 isnt the gul 855 but its still my baby and no matter how long it takes, it will not be given up on until its "finished to my satisfaction". Bloody cars eh, they frustrate and drain money but pay it back ten fold on that bright sunny summer afternoon on a terrific road, windows down hearing that 5-pot sing!

due to size constraints and boost controlling issues i will be running it externally wastgated using the bung in the back as the port for the outlet pipe. this means i can ditch the actuator and the supprorting lugs on the top of the turbo which would otherwise hit the bulkhead.
the turbos compressor housing also needs reclocking 180 degrees for the intercooler piping/plumbing. also this new turbo is oil cooled only and as such water piping will be re-routed back into itself bypassing the new turbo completely.
should make plenty of boost, then to deal with the plenty of lag!!!! lol

update
Engine build is in 2 phases, first phase using 19t and greens should yield 350 bhp at flywheel. Phase 2 using my gt3782 and 630cc deka's should see 420 plus at fly, phase 2 will also see forged rods and pistons and much head work. Phase 2 will commence over the winter.

I assume by the thread that you paint professionally for a living? Don't suppose you are close to me - West mids. I've been quoted crazy prices for my front bumper.

Also be careful with the brake bias on your 6 pots - or what you gain with one hand will be lost to another. Make sure that the volume still suits the master brake cylinder.

Lastly who made your over the top pipe?

depends on many factors, most colours you will find varients in. 435 saffron pearl for example has 9 variants in the glasurit range so for perfect matching to see the car would be beneficail depending on what colour it is. the paint i use requires a certain high build primer, and different colour base coats need different colour primers. i generally dont paint over other peoples prep as cannot guarantee the end result and i dont like anything other than mint, so bit of a hard question to answer for you. what car is yours? and what colour is it? what is the reason for painting the bumper? damaged? paint fade? laquer peel? stone chips?

my splitter was salved from a farbio gts, although the 211 e-class 320 estate lower splitter would also fit and look ok with a section added in the middle. i am mucking about with a old r bumper to extend the spoiler in fibreglass. work is so busy atm that i havent had much down time to do much on this recently

yes that turbo is capable of those sort of figures. it does obviously move the power band very high but will not tail off like my little td04-19t. the turbine housing is a/r 1.12 so pretty big witha 4 inch housing and downpipe. should sound alright lol

fogs werent supposed to look like that but i like them too. laquer can be tinted with any colour so i just mixed some solid yellow glasurit 68 line tinter 2:1 with laquer before adding the hardener, key up the fogs with 2000 grade abralon pad using waterbased degreaser, plastic primer them (plastic primer will etch into glass if done right, spray the coloured laquer until the desired colour/opaque-ness (apoligise for the poor grammer lol) and then spray clear laquer over the top. yo can have whatever colour you like and it is removable.

or just buy lamin-x lol

Major issues with my front bumper is the cracks & missing paint around the inlet potions - you can see the car in my garage or on BRV. Stone chips, missing paint, scars. Sadly it is one of the main things letting down the whole car.

I'd love to be able to respray the whole car - start over - but I don't have the budget.

Essentially it needs removing - rubbing down - I can get it smooth - issue I have is the colour match. A proper re-furb.
I had it done about 4 years ago - but the years have not been kind.

Surely you will floor it, get loads of lag, start to build boost, come on boost eventually, oh my god tear your head off and hit the limiter before you can change gear lol?
Or has the turbo been specced so that lag isn't a problem, complete amateur question as I have literally no clue how that Garett makes its power

well the paint and materials is where the money is, you would be looking at painting the doors as blends on silvers if the rust is anything other than the front edge of wings, so more sripping out of the car would be necessary, labour is charged out by us at £40 per hour so i would say for the front bumper fully repaired, two pack primed/ painted, wings repaired/painted and doors blended, £500 is reasonale frankly. paint and material would be 125 ish and the labour time to strip, repair paint, refit and flat and polish would easily be 10 hours mate. depends if you want it done properly or cheaply really dude. ponit of note is my painjob would have been over five grand in labour and materials lol

this can affected by the a/r ratios of the given turbo, the exhaust downpipe and system and the map you run. the original use of this turbo is the scania dc9 8.8l 5cyl truck, but why i chose this is the compressor map. it flows a huge amount of air at 1 bar compared to say a gt28. the maller a turbo the quicker it will spool but ultimately can pump less air, i will be using revised timing with the cams, much more advance. also will have a map for the water/meth injection and have a nitrous kit to go on. this kit will be used UP TO 1 bar and then shut off to spool the turbo. wont be too bad on lag but will blow for well over 500 bhp no problem at less than 1.7 bar

bearing in mind a gud v70r (desirable) bumper goes for around 150 quid, surely would be cheaper to find a good second hand one from a car being broken etc and get that in the same colour if yours is that mullered? cant imagine a good c70 bumper would be much mre than a ton?

That is another option I have been looking out for.

As far as your project goes - I think much beyond 500nm you will struggle to put it down & it will exceed the capabilities of the chassis. Don't get too focused on peak numbers. If you can push and hold the torque through useable RPM then it will be all good.

Ditch WI - it will not help.

What is the overall aim for this car? It seems a shame with such a lovely paint job to ruin it with unrealistic power plans.

exactly, you get where i am going with this, the engine biuld will have the potential for big big numbers for a t5 fwd, but it will be mapped to be usable. the diff to be used will help but going onto the emerald k6 is the clever bit. it has the ability to have a target boost presure for each gear linked into its own traction control monitoring, launch control etc. it will get its power down when mapped correctly. will do what i can with mechanical grip and then sort the traction with clever boost control. (in theory) soon to prove lol

Wobbly Dave
Friday 13th April 2012, 23:29
I spent a lot of time & money on getting the diff right last year. I am in the process of forging an ME7 engine so I can run around 500NM but I hope to hold that till at least 5K rpm. It is no small feat - the numbers involved get tricky to control at that point.

I wish you all the best - still looking awesome. I hope we'll see you out on the track - be a shame not to use the BBK for some thing more exciting that slowing you down at the end of the quarter.

not being built as a track car, itll handle like a p**sed buffalo, and 1/4 mile will only be low 14's late 13's really i think. just going to be a fun fast road car. maybe to 1 track day for a laugh but i have an addictive personality, ill get hooked

I ran 14.1 @ 104.2 mph - with my current set up. That's 400NM between 3 to 5.5 & peak 320 bhp in 4th. Figures for the lower gears is anyone guess. Don't get time to use 4th!

For fast road application - TBH you don't need a BBK or NOS or a truck turbo. With a slick looking motor like that I'd be tempted to go for more premium rather than out and out power. Keep yr torque curve long, high and smooth. You certainly don't need to waste money forging it.

There are certainly things you can do to make the handling better - without ruining the road feel. Decent set of springs & some good quality shocks - e.g. Munroe Reflex would be an ideal set up for a fast road machine.

Still be fun to see you out on the track. Probably looking to do Oulton Park in November again for sure.

i had a power run on my old 18t that made 302 pounds ft torque, over 400nm i believe if ive converted it properly, 19t and greens should see a bit more than that.
i have plenty of handling upgrades, adj shox, good lowered uprated springs, arb drop link upgrades, camber adjusters, uprated rear arb(not yet fitted) etc just a 1600kg estate will never handle like a caterham lol.

The 19 will certainly work well to keep the torque up for longer.

As far as handling goes - I am obviously a little behind the pace on your project. Yeah - it will never handle (or swap ends) like a caterham but have you tuied going out in the rain in one? - but on a track day it doesn't really matter, as there are no prizes. Just grins. there is much fun to be had. I'd sooner see it being used than idle away in some garage and kept away from the winter weather.

nightmare to do as had to obvoiusly use vht paint, for itto have any chance to not peel off under heat, the whole job had to be less than 100 microns. the etch to go on first to the alloy was 65 microns per coat, then then ground coat, cerallic basecoat and laquer are 10 microns each so really fine spraying required, gud to do though, better than hammerite!

i have bought a good low mileage t5 lump to use for the basis of my new engine build today. the idea being i can run around as it is for a little while whilst the new engine is being built.

i am going to concentrate alot on the headwork and looking into camshaft options. cant see any point in a camshaft more lairy than a 285 degree as want something resembling an idle! ive seen the piper cam kits available and also know tim williams' missile used n/a cams (although not sure what engine these were from).

regarding upping the rev limit, anyone run uprated valve springs? what sort of redline could be expected to get with ths forged rods?

lastly, forged pistons? or (a bit monkey i know) machine 1mm off the originals?

need this lump to be bomb proof with a higher rev limit than normal to suit the big garrett that is going on

Wobbly Dave
Sunday 29th April 2012, 13:08
I would have thought red line would be restricted by cam & valve timing and the mass of the moving internals, namely the momentum of the pistons.

gavt5
Sunday 29th April 2012, 15:20
iirc the rev limit can be raised to 7700 before the pcv and breather system becomes a problem. regarding the unequal crankcase pressures of a 5 cyl engine (compared to a 4 or 6) the solution i would put forward is to drill a hole between the cylinder walls so the downwards pressure is transferred to the rising cylinder a la suzuki vl twin bike?

i have a turbo tuner ecu as well but havent fitted it yet. that'll be an interim until the k6 goes on with the gt3782 so will play with that and the 19t and greens to see what can be got out of the old lump, running it to the limit is no prob as having new motor build up as we speak so maybe can push the afr's a little bit and ee what a standard lump will do with gentle boost control

after nearly making it to the road, my car got backed into by the skip trick driver, gently but enough to cause alot of creases to the passenger door

put through the business it varies dependant on what colour, condition, size of vehicle etc. we've just finished a old merc 450sel and that was a £3000 but have done a white escort that was £1000, so varies massively mate

Hello all, 10months away, work and family and life getting in the way lol, now back. I had thrown in the towel on my t5, just wasnt finishing it. Brought a old saab turbo and just spent my time/money there instead.
A change of career means less time to restore/modify cars so all went belly up really.
Two weeks ago i got my old job back, and got to see the old t5 again, as she was still in the corner of the workshop where its been for last 6months.

So here we go again, t5 project round 2.
Ive got sum coilies on the way for it, new engine bits and aiming for some track fun in summer, whats gonna stop me finishing it this time?!! Lol
Good to be back peeps

Picked up this low mileage engine to build up for my t5, 80k on clock when the car got broken so about 1/3 of the lump in the car now lol, must resist temptation to paint up the block and head.

Was weird seeing the car after such a long time, started with a jump and fresh fuel, handbrake was seized on so took her home on a trailer. only problem with a volvo estate is there isnt much room in a garage to work round it as you can see, at least it shouldnt get keyed and vandalised now, i can sleep better at night.

must get finger out and fit all of the crates and boxes of parts i accumulated over time, and make it into what i always wanted to be.

more coming soon peeps

Due to financial issues, losing job etc, ive backed into a corner, so the project has come to an end. The car and all its parts will shortly be listed for sale unless a miracle happens.
it hurts and ive had to sell 3 other cars as well to make ends meet, wanted to avoid this but now have no choice.

if interested in car/ parts/ whole project pm me

i will put up a thread in the for sale section shortly

Back with a new daily driver, managed to sell my old e24 bmw 635csi to keep the t5, so brought a t4 to keep her company in the garage.
Quite a quick car and handles well, funny contrast to the 70t5 lol
