View Full Version : RTi and Phone Niggles

Hi all after some advice.

I have recently been doing a little digging around the car trying to solve a few niggles (2002 S60 D5).

There are two main issues I want to resolve.

1) The RTi system constantly displays "please insert disc" or "disc cannot be read" or words to that effect. I found a guide on VOC for cleaning the laser and it hasnt helped, infact Im sure the disc isnt spinning anymore but was before taking the unit apart for cleaning. What viably is the best option? I want to rule out the disc and the remaining RTi kit so really would like to test a known working reader and discs before buying a replacement for mine.

2) The inbuilt phone says "Please Insert SIM" despite a SIM being present, I have tried multiple networks and even an original 64k (non 3G SIM) from a known working phone of the cars era (yes sim still works). The unit powers up and allows me to type using the keypad etc but constantly displays please insert SIM. Does anybody know of a common issue or a way to resolve this?

Many thanks

Dunno about the phone mate but have you inserted a lens cleaning disk (Tue type that uses a fluid) let it run then eject and repeat, several times? If a previous owner was a smoker ajd didn't use the cd drive, a layer of ikkyness could build up on the lens which is a pig to remove. It wouldn't cause the phone problem but may be a cheap solution to your lack of Kylie albums ;)

The RTI system has an independant DVD player in the boot Martin. I have tried cleaners multiple times prior to taking it apart and using alcohol on the lens itself with a cotton bud.

Im almost convinced its dead but would like to find somebody with another disc or RTI unit to try that works so we can rule out and identify the issue.

Hmm, I was gonna suggest the alcahol next :)
I've heard of this issue before and I think you have a dead 'un there.
If it powers-up then the rest is fine, just the radio/rti gubbins is toast. not sure if it can be fixed.

Found a selection of dash bulbs for you, I have no need for them any more (my new DIM is LED) so I'll send you the lot tomorrow ;)

@ Bulbs = Thanks very much.

As for the RTI, well at the very minimum the controls and screen works so I guess its probably going to be a new reader. Ho hum.

I have by no means lost faith mate, it was cheap and I knew these faults existed. Even if it costs 800 quid to repair them all (which I doubt) its still a top of the range D5 for less than 2k.

I had a similar problem with my RTi, it was solved with new navigation disks.

Thanks Paul... Im hoping to try someone else's discs and if that fails RTI unit. I believe Pedro is going to help me with this next time Im passing, that way I can rule out certain elements and get to the bottom of it without simply guessing.

Oi! I'll have less of that unless you fancy having another shade of white on the car :mgshoot:

Besides if I were to do a track car, unlike pedro mine would be finished by now... :hidesbehi

The DVD not readable error is a very common issue on the earlier model years (prior to 2005) RTI drives. Mine has just started doing the same thing with no warning. Cleaning discs don't fix, alcohol on the laser reader not fixed it either.

The answer is a new laser pickup. If you have the RTI DVD drive located in the boot area the laser pickup assembly you need is Panasonic RAE-0440 which can be supplemented by model VED-0440. They are not cheap at around £100 that is if you can find a new one which I have struggled to. There is 1 ebay seller with one but wants £130 for it! If you find a decent source that is well priced please let me know as am still looking! Don't even think about a replacement drive from a dealer.. It's about £1,200!

Also, see the thread below for some more detail on this:

Hope this helps

Burchi, many thanks for your input... finally a solid answer from someone with the same issue.

Ill keep my eyes peeled then. Having taken mine apart Im confident I could replace the laser unit myself so thats not an issue.

Ill keep you updated.

I had the same issue in my car with the RTI, I tried cleaning the DVD disc with a cleaning kit. It made no difference. I then used my dual action polisher and some Megs 105 to polish the disc, and it worked. It may be the laser pick up in your car, or the disc may have fine sratches like mine which renders it as unreadable.
Good luck.

Many thanks Burchi, Ill watch for your results and pending the result buy one. Silly question but is the motor incorporated into the laser assembly? Reason I ask is I know the laser wont read a disc but since dismantling the discs dont appear to spin?

Hi there, I have tried the disc in another RTI system and it worked perfectly... kind of narrows it down to the DVD reader I believe. Cheers anyway.

No, the motor is separate. What I did notice was though when I took mine apart and re-assembled, I had not located the laser lens part correctly on the guide bar that it sits on. Also make sure that the plastic cogs line up and mesh together correctly. A second strip down and correction of this made my motor spin again fine albeit still not reading the disc though!

Ah ok thats interesting, ill attempt to try it again when I next get an hour or two spare then.

Hi there,
There is a guy on this site (and also on Volvoclub.org) that repairs these systems. Unfortunatly I cannot remember his name at the moment, I think it might be MARCEL. but if you ask in the I.C.E. section you might find him.
good luck,
Joe.

Marcel from Central Services in Ipswich, I bought a replacement CD changer from him, he is Volvo's authorised centre and where dealers they send all their units.

on his website it says - "For all satellite navigation system repairs call us on 01473 725 953"

He is a very nice guy and was keen just to help me out (admittedly I did spend £350 on a new CD changer!)

for the sim card holder, cut a piece of card the same size as the sim card and put it under the sim card before inserting back into the slot.
the card you use needs to be just thinner than a sim card is. - this was a common problem where it does not make contact.

Little update on this...

Yesterday however before biting the bullet and buying a replacement I decided to try and old trick and to leave the laser in Isopropol alcohol overnight and let it dry during the day.

Well after a little re-assembly and re-calibration of the motor slider assembly I am pleased to announce...

Thats £200 spared :)

I have (had) the same problems you had. The phone issue was solved by putting a piece of paper under the SIM card.
W.r.t. the dvd player, I have replaced the laser but still I have sometimes problems.
Could you please let me know what you did when you re-calibrated the motor slider.

I think this can help.

Thanks!!!

From what I can remember I had to adjust the small piece of metal which contacts the rotating rod which slides the laser unit along.

Ill try and hunt out the guide I used for you and post back.
