Angle gear does seem to be the major bugbear, although ours was given a clean bill of health when it was serviced. Don't know if the suspension is problematic or not, but our car had the front shocks changed under warranty before we owned the car.

As said make sure the angle gear HAS been done. Look out for misting on the shocks as these are expensive, but they are coming down in price now. The cylinder liners are prone to splitting. This can happen on standard cars as well as tuned cars, I have done a 2.4 T5 replacement so I have a spare 2.5 engine surplus to my requirment in my garage. My inter cooler was on the verge of splitting. So I took the oppertunerty to replace it with a FMIC. Also check the A frames and if you buy take it to have the 4 wheel alignment done.

Your probably used to the diesel s torque, the Rs can feel a bit unbalanced at times under normal driving, but if you really push them , it would run rings round any standard Volvo of that era
