Hi Everyone,

Just bought a 2001 V70 2.4T complete with all three keys and two remotes but...does anyone know what I can do about the revolting sticky decomposing plastic on the keys themselves?

Can they be coated with anything to stop them leaving black goo all over my hands? Can you buy any kind of cover to go over them?

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Cheers,

Stuart

Welcome to the forum sir. This is somerhing that has bothered me for a while now. I'm gonna try something in a bit. Will post on this thread if successful.
Other than rotten keys, how are you liking the car?

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the welcome. It'll be interesting to see how your plans go. Other than the rotten keys, I'm liking the car so far although I only picked it up on Saturday evening so I've not had a good play yet.

Cheers,

Stuart

Carbon fiber vinyl wrap and a heat gun. Took a few attempts but didnt look too bad. I've been playing with the stuff for a few weeks now. Theres a link to the wrap I used on my thread...

Just ordered myself a few little sheets to play with. Any tips on getting it to work well? You seem to be the resident obsessive - I mean expert!

Trust me, I'm not the only one ;)
Tips...? Heat guns are awkward when you need to use both hands to manipulate the wrap so jam it in a vice or similar. Keep your fingers clear of the hot air! Don't get the wrap too close to the heat. If you get it wrong, peel it off and heat it up - it will revert to its original flat condition. above all, take your time ;)
Have fun bud.

I tried heating the wrap and ramming the key through first but it didn't go well...

Then I wrapped a bit round, with a bit of heat...

And stretched a strip over the top, to tidy it up a bit.

Hope this is of some use ;)

Funnily enough of all the little niggles I've had since buying the car this was the most annoying because I couldn't see a fix without spending lots of dosh on a new key !

Electrical heat shrink sleeve and careful trimming :)

Well after a very pathetic attempt at vinyl wrapping I had a brainwave as my wife and the kids were busily painting with acrylics and I spotted their pot of matt polyurethane varnish...

Four coats later and the keys are nicely rubberised and no longer sticky!

Problem solved, hope it helps others with the same problem.

Cheers,

Stuart

PS. I used FolkArt Artist's Matt Varnish 888
