t4's what are they like on fuel??

Hi there, i'm loosing my works van soon, and gonna need to commute in my own vehicle, What are s40/v40 t4's like on fuel (just out of interest).

For your comparison cos I have both:
T5 - 20-25mpg (21.5mpg on comp screen)
T4 - 28-35mpg (29mpg an comp screen)

Much better than the T5 in my experience. I get 30mpg and I rape mine half the time. Could get more if I was sensible. A stock T4 is as quick if not quicker than a stock 850. Dooooooo it my son.

It will start off as a daily then you will realise how good it is and have to make a big decision. Or you could run both and be a very lucky chap!!!

i get between 29 and 30 mpg in my T4 and I dont hang around.

For how well they go they are actually pretty good on fuel, i got about 27mpg on my journeys to work (22mpg in my s70r) and could get 38mpg on a long journey (34 is the best i'v had out of the s70)

Both were autos.

They sound like a bit of a bargain, my mate had one new years ago be said it was much better than his t5

They definitely feel smaller though, not as refined ride as an 850 or V70.

But What they take away they give back with handling, from traffic light
Capabilities and probably cheaper to insure and run.

I found the t4 was a fair bit cheaper to insure and was much easier on the tyres.
My lightly modded auto t4 could manage 0-100mph in less than 14.5secs.

I average between 300miles - 350 to the tank. If cruising in Europe the highest I ahve got out of mine is a little over 450 to the tank and my T4 is not standard...

I got 44mpg today but I was doing 55mph as I was trying to get to Sainsburys to fuel up and was on the A1 heading back to York. While I bitch and moan about mine I wouldnt now go for an 850 T5, only thing that would change my mind is an 850R Saloon. I reckon they are oft missed cars and I was surprised at how nippy they are.

As for road presence no it hasnt got any, but thats a good point imho.

People i knew, said they it was hard to tell what it was after i'd taken the front grille off the t4.#

Thats why i kept all the rear badges on, so everyone knew it was a volvo that had just smoked them! lol

Phase 2 T4 and sensible driving will see 33-35mpg. I've had several!

They also handle loads better than the larger cars... bonus.

Yeh def Phase 2 as you pointed out to me when I was looking for mine. Or 1.5, although isnt it the P1's that have the slightly stronger engine if your modding?

My 850 t5 is shocking on fuel at the moment, I reckon its due a full service soon which I'm hoping will bring it to more than under 20mpg! Any one got any other tips? Apart from stopping driving it like I've stole it... Because thats not gona happen lol

Its the 1855cc engine thats the stronger one.

Just replaced mine with the V70

Get the `98 1855 T4 forge pistons which is very reliable and not 2 litre 2000- the head gaskets blow because the liners split.

The T4 is perhaps one of the most economical of the range apart from the diesel and maybe on a good day the GDI

20 around town and up to 45 on a run with Shell optimax / 98ron only, if you use 95ron you will burn the exhaust valves out.

Although on my insurance, Group 17 my T5 is Group 16 and dearer

Average use 28 to 30

By the way my V40 T4 went round a corner like a threepenny bit!!

Mrs Niles New (to her) V40 Turbo diesel......long run (proven) 62mpg, round town (school runs/shops etc etc) 40 mpg. remap box will chip it up to 145bhp.
