not on a 850/v70 it isnt..
look like this once seperated..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-V70-V90-850-V40-MAF-sensor-Air-Flow-Meter-PART-1275749-/251006891365?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a712d3565

the right side of that ebay pic is where it fits on the air box..

and this ebay add is how a pipercross filter fits on the maf

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIPERCROSS-INDUCTION-KIT-Volvo-850-2-3-2-5-Turbo-T5-/270312235142?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3eefdd6086

The airbox lid really does pull off the maf housing, 2 torx screws and rip the round thing out of the square thing. then just put the air filter straight on the maf and let it rest on the bottom half of the airbox...

Very true on a n/a car but do uou realise how hot a turbo gets no matter what filter you have the air will heat up tremendously that's why we have intercoolers some like them some don't

I got the standard t5 fresh air pipe from the front to my cone filter(which is a K&N bought secondhand for the pricy sum of £10) and seems to be fine
