there seems to be quite a bit of 'slack' in my auto box on my T5

not sure how to describe this but ill try as best as I can... basically sometimes when changing up there is this thud that you can feel as the box changes up, only after the thud does the car start pulling again (i.e. when the next gear is engaged)

i get a similar sensation sometimes when coming to a stop like at the traffic lights. The revs drop a wee bit lower than the idle point and i hear/feel a bit of grumbling from the box for like less than a second or so then the revs whip back up to normal idling.

Anyone had this ? Does it mean theres trouble afoot with my auto box ? or maybe some adjustment required ?

cheers

Rich

Check the condition and colour of your tranny fluid & replace if necessary (ie burnt smell, dark brown/black). Also check ATF fluid levels. Otherwise I suspect you need to have the opinion of a specialist.....Sorry.

Hi,

I had exactly the same issues about a month ago but was too busy to check it,
Next thing I know I have a 'Transmission Service Urgent' alert, and within 2 days I have the car off the road and now Volvo say my Gearbox needs replacing in it's entirety, (€5k+) so take swordy's advice and get it checked urgently.

I was told that my issue may originally have been a solenoid problem but that the damage was too great for that to matter now.

May not be related at all, but I had exactly the same experience that you describe, have you found the box also 'hunting' for gears under acceleration?

Good Luck!!

I had my AT box done on the 855R last year - Cost £1200 for a full recon.

I too had lots of "slack" and shunt into fourth. Then the whole thing failed. Suggest you use Dave's chap.

Andrew.

My "man" is John Rawle - AT Specialist of 30 yrs - extremely good. He is nr Redditch of the M42 though (south of Brum) so that might not work out for you? Be worth bringing it up here for him to look at. His number is 0121 478 2064
