Had the S60R serviced in the week, and it came back with a few things that need to be done, so just wondering what I can do myself, and what I should leave to them.
1 n/s driveshaft oil seal leaking
2 Both rear link rods worn
3 Bevel gear leaking. (I'm guessing this is the angle drive box, the garage have quoted 3 hours, plus needs to stand for 24hours before it can be driven)

So, other than the driveshaft oil seal, which I don't feel confident doing, is the angle drive easy (ish) to do for a D.I.Y. mechanic, and how do I reseal it? and do I have to get the rear link rods from Volvo, or can I get them cheaper elsewhere?

Can no-one help in answering my questions?

Having seen the likes of Tom @ HLM struggle with the Angle sleave - for 2 days - I would say no it isnt a job you can tackle. TMS Coventry have a special airtool to remove the sleave (assuming this is what you are on about??).

IIRC rear droplinks can be bought as A/M pattern parts as well as Volvo originals. I bought Meyle ones for the front of the C70 - I don't know if they do the rears as well but I wias impressed with the price & the quality.

I shall be back later to see if I can find'em

Thanks Dave, but as far as I'm aware it's just a case of the bevel (angle?) gear box leaking. Do you think by link rods they mean drop links, maybe I should give them a ring, this is the problem with the wife going and not me.

I can only go off what you said. I am not 100% certain what the leak on the angle gear is. The sleave is the sacrificial part in the AWD set-up but it is a right bitch to repair.

I didn't find any Meyle products. I would expect given that they are on the rear that they are indeed talking about the link rods between the rear anti-roll bar and the rear wishbones.

Not sure how hard it is to fix the angle gear leak but if I were you if it is that what is leaking then I wouldn't drive the car in till its been repaired as low or no oil in these can damage the angle gear very easy & could end up costing you more than twice as much.

I've got Meyle drop links front and back on my V70, so I would expect they do them for the R. Well worth getting hold of.

Stribo - speak to GazT4R on T5D5 about how hard it is to do the bevel seal. He has just done his angle gear so should be able to give you an idea.

The driveshaft seal isn't difficult at all really - maybe an hour. They aren't expensive from Volvo either.

Angle/Bevel - same thing just different terminology. Brand new they are £700 + fitting and a Volvo part only.

If the bevel gear is leaking, don't flap! It wont spew its guts out on the road so your safe to drive it to a garage. In the meantime, i'd advise that you don't use the vehicle unless its life or death.

Dave is right, they are a complete and utter slag to replace. The bevel box doesn't have a drain plug, only a filler. So the oil needs to be sucked out or you can drill a hole in one of the casing bolts if your good at bench fitting and make a drain plug, thou i would advise against that.

Link rods/drop links - same thing different terminology again.

As for standing for 24hrs before using!!! WTF are they on about? Load of bolox mate. My advise would be to ONLY take your R to a Volvo specialist like HLM or a main dealer. The vast majority of local garages have never seen an R let alone worked on one. They are more likely to do damage if they don't know what they are doing and on these cars that's very easily done....You have been warned!!

I had my local main dealer replace my rear drop links for £75 fitted! Bargain. They will easily last another 70k so i'm not bothered about other makes. If they were £750 then i might shop around but seriously, is it really worth it?

To be fair mate our Volvo was taken to a Volvo specialist, http://www.pwcars.co.uk , who have worked on, and have bought and sold the car we now own, so obviously, I thought they's be the best place to take it. I'm an average D.I.Y. mechanic on Fords, as I know them, but having never had a Volvo before, am a bit wary about getting something wrong. Looks like I'll just be doing the drop links for now, and let the garage do the rest, until I know my way better around the Volvo, and to be fair they do give us a courtesy car whilst it's in.

I know in a couple of years time when I know the Volvo inside out, I'll kick myself for doing it, but at this early stage in our ownership I don't want to ££££ it up.

Thanks mate, but it looks destined for the garage until I'm comfortable working on the car.
