Has become much louder of late though the brakes work perfectly.
Am I right in assuming the brake booster has gone ?
Are the booster and the servo the same thing ?

Sounds like a servo (vacuum) leak

Without looking I`d assume so.

Does it seem to hiss when foot is taken off the brake? I'd say it's the servo if so. Seen that people have sprayed a bit of WD40 on in and seems to have stopped the noise (probably not fixed the issue though!)

Lol. :D
There's a couple of vac pipes under there as well. Might be worth having a peep and see if ones gone adrift.

Booster=Servo. I had mine replaced about a year ago and I know others who have to do the same (MRG Volvo in Chippenham). I would not be confident in offering you advice on what else it might be but mine was hissing when I released the pedal and eventually was hissing all the time. My brakes were perfect with a single press but if I was on and off the pedal a few times in quick succession the servo assistance reduced (harder pedal). Fine with new servo.
