Thought I'd get to the bottom of this today!
So cleaned MAF again having a spare to fall back on - reset ecu (battery off) - no change
removed all intake pipes to inspect and clean, new flame trap, and after going through everything I found it - the 1" pipe from the "bypass valve" ( I think that's what it is?) onto the vacuum tree was just loose I suppose its got a bit hard with age, put a clip on it and....... fuel economy, performance, and smooth running all returned - brakes are better too
Wish I'd taken more notice of an earlier post about the vacuum tree now!
Front suspension next.
