I think TC mentioned £300 if he could get a few orders

Tomcat
Monday 16th January 2012, 22:20
Not sure yet, depends on how standard you want to keep hinges, catches and things like that..Bear in mind that the standard hinges have some pretty beefy springs on them to keep the bonnet open, if they stay it may mean launching the bonnet every time you open it and possibly snapping it.

Interested depending on cost. Wrap it in CF, job done!

How much of a weight saving would it be?

Buy a heater to keep you warm and it will dry the fibre glass quicker lol.I could pick my bonnet up if it will fit in a 850 saloon lol im not far from you

I think we'll need two seperate prices, one for a full bonnet and one for skin only.

just some numbers for you. The standard bonnet (on its own, no hinges) weighs 20.5kg, cutting out the internal reinforcement removed 6.2kg. Leaving the metal skin weighing 14.3kg

i have removed more since this pic, all the edges are now ground flush

That's a good idea, keeps it simple.
Just the skin for me! :)

It would be interesting to no what the fibre glass bonnet would weight

wont know until I make one, but the weight can be varied dependant on how many layers of glass I use.

I think just a f/glass skin would vibrate to pieces.....
For me I'd be looking at some rear renforcing to maintain the shape.

Would be willing to be proved wrong though..

I'll be ok because the scoop/bulge would stiffen mine up

just a thought....if you make the front end on these cars any lighter, will you ever get traction? lol some of the tuned volvos spin up to third gear so having less weight may be fun once your flying but getting going might be a problem??

I think the idea is fantastic and it will certainly save a good few kg's over even a stripped standard bonnet. If pedro is correct and the metal skin weighs 14.3 then I can see a fibreglass skin weighing at least half.

Probably a silly question but how does fibreglass with alot of heat? Would the glue not begin to "undo"?

to loose all that weight must be a good thing?
a loss of traction on a 1/4 mile maybe, but round a circuit the idea is to get the weight as low down in the car as poss,to stop the roll through the corners.

so in my case for example, If I Loose 10kg off the bonnet I will need to add 10kg somewhere else as I am close to my race weight. this "ballast" I can put low down and move it from front to back to aid setup.likewise the boot lid, if they are available too, brilliant!

so its a good gain in my opinion. :)

Tomcat
Friday 20th January 2012, 17:44
Ok, can we just confirm who's actualy in then well talk about deposits etc..

As a rough guide I'd say £300 for a full bonnet and £200 for just the skin.

Also....What the hell are we going to do about getting these to you?.

On another point, if a couple of you want boot lids then I should be able to do them too.

Guys can I please have a definate list of who's wanting one?, Seems Pedro and Claymore are sourcing theirs elsewhere, Can you just confirm if your in or not, that way I can take some deposits, order the supplies and go find a bonnet. I also will do the boot lids but again I need numbers.
