It's a bit different on the R models - somewhat easier, in fact, if you only need to get to the connections on the radio, as in this case you don't need to remove the ECC panel.

1. Disconnect the battery (don't omit this step or you'll be visiting your Volvo Dealer to turn the airbag light off if you disturb the ECC connections!)

2. Open cupholder cover, and remove gearstick surround by pulling firmly upwards at the rear:

3. Remove 2x T25 torx screws at base of panel:

4. Pull firmly perpendicular to the panel to release it:

That allows you enough room to reach the cables on the back of the unit (eg to fit an IMIV, etc).

When finished messing with stereo, refit by reversing the above steps 4 - 2, and then:

5. Turn key to position II and reconnect the battery.

Done.

I may be removing the whole head unit in the near future, if so I'll document that as well.

I need to take mine out, i have a weird problem with mine, somtimes when i touch the bass, trebble, fader and balance buttons it will knock my front speakers off! And there a nightmare to get back on, even going over bumps knocks them on and off. Volvo checked the connections and said they were fine, i think its a circuit board problem in the unit itself

I might be replacing my HU-850 with another double-DIN unit, so might be an easy replacement for yours if the unit does turn out to be at fault. Just a thought!

Maybe al, thank you, i dont think there a straight swap, i think it might be mated to the car....

That'd be annoying, though entirely believable.

Though my 2001 Phase 2 V70 stereo WAS a straight swap, when I did that previously.

I can try my dads one in the car and see if it kicks up a fuss
