On the way to work at 4am driving through the sidewards rain and the flooded roads my car started throwing a fit jerking and backfiring alot and it died, i could always start it but then it would die and couldnt be driven, i got the missus and 2 kids out of bed at 4.30am to tow me home, after i finished work and the car had dried out it seems to be ok. Any ideas what water has got into to cause this? scared to go out in the rain now

Normally they are fine in the wet, at least up to a point.

Any chance it could be a big air leak? Sounds like a similar symptom, if you ignore the rain?

Maybe got some water on ht leads/sensor? My old pug 205 suffered this in bad weather untill i sealed up the coil

If it starts and ticks over, id leave it idling for a good hour then take it for a blast down the bypass to dry everything out

I had the same with my old V70. Hit a bit of standing water pulled up a hill and then started jerking and then died. Towed it home started it up next day and was fine. Must have just sucked small amount of water into the intake because i had my airbox drilled. Dont know if it had soaked the filter and couldnt pull any air through or if some water had come in contact with the MAF and just killed it.

my bro loves VW's (mainly the older air cooled) which is part the problem, but i do think there overpriced. He used to have a race spec MkI which was very quick & had some close races with BT on the 1/4mile. Had a specially built 2.2litre Tim Stiles Racing engine
