Hi, lol after fitting my bigger turbo and polly bushes i'm noticing the Gearbox making more noise,

She doesn't jump out of gear but it's just well you know your own car.

If/wen the box goe's what sort of Box should i put on? i dont no what box is on there atm.

Car is a 1994 obd1 style 855 t5 Manual.

Any recomendations? or things to avoid?

Been told best box is the m56 the one you have or m59 the one from 850r with LSD.

You will have the M56 box, with external clutch slave cylinder.

Only really have 2 choices, either the same again, or, if you can find one, a M59 with the driveshafts out of a 850R (I can never remember if its an R or a T5R!) then you will gain a sort of limited slip diff.

Also, it needs to be an early type box, with a speed sensor, unless you fancy a bit of wiring.

Yes it's the 850r, it has a viscous diff, m59, I've got both, still f...ing spins like a spinning thing when pulling away quickly.

Or, you could try the way I went, and fit a Gripper plate type LSD, still no guarantee it will stop spinning the tyres!

Make sure it's the m56h not m56l as its the high ratio box, yes might do the LSD route myself. I have to change the 850r box it's a little worn on synchro

It's not the wheel spining thats getting on me tit, it's the syncro's i think they are wearing out, it's like i can here them even when a Gear is engaged. worse when the box is cold.

Thanks for all the reply's by the way

The m59 does not have a lsd, its the viscous drive shafts that help with traction not completly elimanate wheel spin.
Gav if your budget aint too tight, the best set up is an m56h fitted with a gripper diff. . . . . . . . . Around 600 quid tho. If you need to do a bit of traveling dont forget ive got the diesel audi! 60mpg. . . . . . . . Yea boy lol i dont mind helping mate aslong as it aint million miles away haha

Ok how do i tell the above apart? is there a part number on them somewhere?

Would a Diesel Box Fit? early typre like mine?

How do you tell a early box from the later obd2 box?

Sorry for the questions just dont wanna get the wrong box?

Also is the M56L lower Gear'd?? Could be advantage?? dont really need all that top end performance you see.

Ok Looks like a M56L is the box that is fitted to mine, as the M56h take the speedo pick up from the abs rings.

Did Volvo ever produce a M56H box with the speedo sensor in the side of the bell housing?

If so what Volvo would i find this on?

Its not a problem if your 'new' box doesn't have the speed sensor, you can join the sensor wires to the ABS on the N/S/F wheel.

I'm doing that to mine, as now it has a Gripper in it, it no longer has a speed ring

I got my M56 I had for £50. Gearbox's are strong as hell on these cars. Unless you have money to fit LSD I'd just swap like for like. People usually want £300 for 850r M59 boxes because of the viscous, which isn't a proper LSD so makes very little difference to traction. I have read somewhere that the M56 is stronger than the M59 anyway.

Early boxes had the speed sensor on the diff, newer ones had it wired into the abs whether H or L if that helps

I don't know how big a diffence is with the h or l ratio,s does anybody know? Should be cool now brick just a bigger turbo needed

the gearbox you want and need is an early 2L.20v box it will traceform year mate but make sure its this gearbox because the diff and ratios are alot different compare to the others.emlyn has got the gearbox you want with the speedo drive on it.when i tlod him and woody about the conversion they listened and never looked back.take it from me you want to do this and if you can afford a gripper diff then you will be laughing or ask wobbly if he is willing to sell his spare quaffe diff if he has still got it.

If it helps, the M56LK will do 192mph with one diff and 170mph with the other. Has the internal clutch cylinder tho.

Really? I always thought that the M56L was a low ratio box in the 850's and if it is then you won't be doing the clock with one of those fitted ;)

On a side note, have you considered that as a result of effectively hard mounting the gearbox to the subframe with the polybushed lower torque mount that the engine noise is not the only thing that will be amplified through to the passenger compartment. I found that with mine after having the lower torque mount poly bushed, the box is slightly more audible and that's an auto ;)

as long as it is a 2.0 20v then yes thats the box and at that reg should have the speedo drive too

yes the m56l are low ratio but in the 2L.20v they had to put a gearbox in that would make the car do 60 in 10 sec flat to go again the other cars at the time ,so volvo fitted a bigger diff to compansate it .don at kalmor union fitted the same box in his s70 285 bhp t5 with a gripper diff and pulled a 14.2 easy and had never been on the strip before.
