Thinking about doing a satin black/chrome job on the Big Sweed, so, as is my tradition, I got my photoshop head on...

Opinions please guys...

Saw so many S60s on my roadtrip to Camberly today, that's what got me thinking about doing something with mine.. ultimately, I'd like R bumpers but funds won't allow it, they're effin hard to find and I can't be doing with the backlash is get for trying to mimic n R. ;)

Sooo tempting, I even have the means and materials to do it bit I'd oe permanently paranoid about pebbles getting flicked up off the motorway and going straight through it and hitting the I/C.
Looks good tho.

So are you modifying the chrome one please, as I think mine would look good like that as well, with the graphite alloys. If you do it, will you share your method with me please, or is that being too cheeky?

Well, the plan is to remove the grille, then take the slash off (its clipped on, I believe) then mask the outer chrome border. A few coats of primer, a few coats of satin black then reassemble. Oh, ill put it through the dishwasher first. It worked wonders on the 850 grille I'm currently trying to flog;)

I'll probably do one of my how to thingys.

Look forward to seeing the results, and then I may do the same. Are you planning to tackle this over the Holidays?

Well... I've got tomorrow afternoon off...;)

Only question is... Anybody know how to get the grille off these things without taking the bumper off? Lol

Look in through the grille, you should see the clips (3 I think). Use a pointy-thing to release the clips and pull it out.

It looked like it was made of chromed metal then I realised it wasn't when it almost snapped in half trying to get it out :)
Just waiting for the last coat of black to dry, so will probably be tomorrow before it gets fitted.

Doesn't look bad in the pic mate. I've found that mine's getting plagued by stone chips. Time for a style change methinks...;)

I'm sure the Volvo slash should just clip off, mine was missing when I bought it. They do look loads better in black though

There's 4 horrible little washers holding the slash on.

They look good when you make the effort...

i remember the horrible washers when i did the same job on my s40 and the v40 but for some reason the facelift it's been changed to more bloody clips!
am i right in thinking that the s60 grills don't fit the v70?!?

bet there is some serious amounts of lacquer on there to stop chipping.
i may buy another grill and do it with plastidip to hopefull lessen the chipping.

I only sprayed mine last week and I've not had chance to drive it yet so it's still chip free.
On the old 850's I used to spray it every 6 months or so

I'm trying to work out how much of a ball-ache it would be to vinyl wrap a grille... the whole thing, not just the outer edge and slash.

danny-R
Monday 4th March 2013, 00:12
Can't imagine it would be easy. That plastidip stuff is a good idea though
