Always had a soft spot for the early 740's and 760's and have been toying with the idea of getting a turbo'd one. I know out the box they're not going to set the world on fire but anyone on here had any experiences of them? I know about Smithy's 940 build has anyone else had one at all?

Yes that's right :)

What are they like to drive, what do they actually feel like performance wise compared to a bog standard T5?

Ive sat in a T5, and owned 2 940's.

The T5 seemed a bit firm for my ass, whereas the 940 (740s almost identical) seemed more like driving around in an armchair. They are really comfortable. I had some 40mm lowering springs on mine and it made a world of difference.

Takes alot more effort than a T5 to get the power though, but then again.... it is going to the right wheels :')

the 760 turbo intercoolers were 182 bhp with a garratt t3 turbo as standard but the 940 had a better engine and squiter blocks too.and also some of the 700 series turbos ran 9mm rods instead of 13mm rods too.perfect option would be get a 740/760 turbo and drop the 940 engine with the 740 cam turn that baby up to 20 psi then less than a 6 sec to 60 mph mate.but i still like my 137 bhp 940 just looks right with the pearl paint too.and yes you can make a 760 turbo go faster than a t5 just using an mbc

That's where the 7/8/9 series Volvos age so well, P2s will be dog food tins well before they will ever be considered retro imho :(

A black 740 turbo intercooler estate (Preferably without the gopping red leather) Is the only car I'd swap or sell mine for... At the minute. I did have a hankering for a black 93 Viggen, But it needs more chassis work than a 740. Lol.

they were good on power but now where near as quick as the t5 standard and all of ours were autos but as smithy said you can make them quick with very little effort

Yeah I was looking it up a while back. Later block with the oil squirters, 16v head etc. But the right one just never came up.

hiya mate

Iv got a 940 estate. same year, colour, engine etc as smithys but as i said just an estate. Its completely stripped with just the 2 front seats, soon to be plastic buckets.

It goes like FU(K when it boost properly and iv got grip! Wasn't boosting properly but just cleaned the MAF and the 1st run was a success. Id say im about 30-40% through my tuning plans.

So far its got, Ebay intercooler and 3" hard pipes, 960 throttle, 740 turbo and head and cam, mbc, fpr, 3" exhaust and cut springs running 14psi. Iv got a 19t and VXR injectors to fit and going to do a clutch upgrade soon. With the new turbo/injectors and the boost wacked up t0 24psi il definately have over 250break at the wheels. with a new cam and chip im hoping for well over 300 at the wheels.

You can ask emlyn AKA the flying moose how well it goes when it boost ok!!! It will pull away from his T5r noticable which as im sure your aware has 240 bhp. And that was me only running 14psi, with the setup iv got i could run 17/18psi.

Id like to thank Smithy as he is my guru of 940 tuning!!

I think its great fun. I had a evo 6 before with 366bhp so it obviously doesn't handle as well or it isnt as fast YET. I love the looks i get whilst driving! It has the hks backbox on it that i took of an evo 4 i owned before the 6. People just shake there head at me but then i laugh when i see them getting smaller in my rear view mirror!! Plus my bird hates it which is always a bonus!

My plan is to start drifting it next year at the pod hence why i stripped it. I cant wait intil i fit a hydro handbrake next year, its gona be soo much fun!

All the best

Joe
