So decided today to do the engine bay and start decontaminating the outside. Not very nice day and feeling a bit under the weather so didnt get too much done.
This is how the bay started

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/4984/dsc02236h.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/248/dsc02236h.jpg/)

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7568/dsc02238e.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/440/dsc02238e.jpg/)

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/9858/dsc02242d.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/827/dsc02242d.jpg/)

Weapons of choice!!! Dish brush and bog brush for the non painted parts and hard to reach bits and paint brush for elsewhere! Copious amounts of Megs Super Degreaser at 4:1 and im about 60% happy with the result but will have another go in the new year.

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/959/dsc02243x.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/dsc02243x.jpg/)

After rinsing and then closed bonnet to dry it out

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6313/dsc02246z.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/534/dsc02246z.jpg/)

Once dried out i wiped excess with a cloth and realised im out of 303 so grabbed some cheapy stuff for the minute

Looks a bit shiny i know but it has dried off and gone a nice matt now!

Looks like a job well done I say!

Im assuming 303 is a variety of silicone sealant or similar?

Its the best, bar quartz stuff, for plastics and trim. Brilliant on engine bays by far and last ages!

Err actually, no. 2" left and half an inch up there's a block with 3 6mm bore hoses and a wire attached to it. It should be attached to the airbox mate.

I can throughly recommend Aerospace 303 Protectant as a great dressing once you have cleaned it off. Keeps your plastics healthy & looking good.

Looks good mate!

Just to let you know, the inlet manifolds on these Volvo's come up nice with 'Gunk degreaser' and a tooth brush in my experience. Don't brush your teeth with this brush afterwards, though.

...and the cam cover may need a little wire wool, the top of the cam cover corrodes and goes all white and powdery :(

Really good transformation on your engine bay.

I always try and hide the fact i'm cleaning my engine bay when I do it....my neighbours think just washing the exterior paintwork more than once a year is going beyond the call of duty...

Not quite sure what you mean by engine lacquer?? If its the old greasy anti rust stuff they used to put on cars i had the same problem with a golf i did a while back. Didnt have any white spirit to hand which is meant to work but did try Auto Glym Super Resin Polish and with a bit of elbow grease it came off!!

(actually a Mr 'I now have a T5' knows...my whole car needs a good mop and polish). Looks great after a quick wash but I'd love it to look like a new pin).
Happy to volunteer my very own workshop and all my effort to help.

Needs more than a mop and polish, more like a major detail (especially the inside!).

boot floor is now clean as a clean thing. Got some fanatstic degreaser (meant to do hands but you wouldn't believe what a good job it can do on other stuff). Interior is just daily yuk. Nothing serious.

My workshop is fully closeable. so anytime you want is ok. Going to my mates on thursday to steam clean my engine bay so the major nasties are gone.

cool but just remember its all in the prep! I would defo advise having a couple of brushes that have very long handles or at least wrap some tank tape wound the handles to a long bit of wood for those bits you just cant reach but can see! Good luck with it and just dont be scared, get stuck in and do keep the engine running when your jetting it!!!!
