View Full Version : TFM's 854R

As some of you may remember after my mishap with the old 854 T5-R which ended rather badly I borrowed a rather nice Red 850R Saloon from Mr Smithness for a month or so.

Well ever since turning down the first oportunity to buy it I have regretted every minute...

Guess what the opportunity arose once more and this time I have the car.

The previous owner has done the car a real justice and has kept it immaculate, very nice to see an 850R that has been cared for properly.

Plans are to restore it to full glory, this will include some paintwork and alloy refurbishment.

Mechanically I have a few ideas... first will be a new turbo and injector combination, this will more than likely be a 16T or 18T with whites or blues. Following this a remap. Also have a 302 conversion to fit and an RIP kit to sort. After that it should be a nice all round car with that little more poke.

Below are a few Pics

I think I may possibly re-fit the black grill but with a Volvo slash, I do however like it looking standard at the front.

Ive had a 16T/18T and 19T mate infact owned all three turbo's at once. The reason I am considering the 16T is simply because I know good power can be made with little lag.

The 18T and 19T can be made very well and with little lag on manual cars but its definately a little harder with autos I think, we'll see!

Well the S70 owes me £200 so Im in no rush to get rid. I think I may well break it and use the turbo, injectors and RIP on the 850R. Would also be ideal for the donor parts for a manual conversion, although id use the M56L I have over the M56H.

Listen it wont be staying auto forever, when I can afford to recon the box and fit a gripper diff then Ill go manual.

Too weak Frankie, as and when I can afford the diff ill probably forge the bottom end and buy a bigger turbo too.

That said if an M59 comes up cheap then its the obvious choice.

Well completed a little more work today.

First did a full engine flush, I decided after 138k it was probably due one. As expected not a lot of gunk came out but enough to justify the flush. After this a complete oil change with Millers XSS 10w40 Semi Synthetic oil.

Finally the summer coolant was changed for winter coolant to avoid the frozen block!

Below are a few pics... supprisingly good nick underneath, no oil, excellent nick powerflow and more supprisingly and something I am happy with is that it doesnt have nivomats! Easy then to upgrade to something a little firmer.

To be honest its quite quiet. It only has one silencer but its a large one and the CAT is still in place for the time being. It does however sound nice if a little mellow when you apply your right foot.

Powerflow however do have a vast variety of silencers. On my old 850 T5 I too had a custom powerflow but with two smaller silencers and it sounded fantastic. Infact I think the words I used to describe it were "Its quiet at idle and sounds like a jet on boost".

Best thing you can do is start with one medium silencer and add another if its too loud.

Well cracked out the Makita, spanners, screw driver and Torx bits today.

Jobs completed...
-Replace failed bulbs in the Dash (yes dash off job unfotunately!)
-Refurbish front grill and fit Chrome Volvo Slash
-Fit TC Splitter.
-Removed Chav Indicators and replaced with standard units.

Also have a set of fully refurbed Volans in anthracite now fitted :)

All in all happy with the days work. Still have the 302's to fit and the car needs a bloody good polish before the Ace Cafe meet.

I havnt decided on the Grill yet, I think the black compliments the splitter very well. I also have a mint condition standard grill so can revert back at any time.

Yeah I think it suits the red too mate, it didnt look right originally though I dont think with the Volvo badge abscent.

I really like the idea of giving the lower grills a lick of paint, I think ill be doing that.

The standard indicators look a little tired compared to the almost brand new headlamp units so I need to do something with them.

Oh yeah an all black grille requires the chrome slash to break it up. Plus with the grille badge/slash present it looks factory along the lines of a 740 or later 240 grille so doesn't stand out like a grille without the badge would.

I would, been thinking about doing it on mine.... The ONLY thing stopping me is that due to their locations they'll be crying out for stones to chip them.

You hit the nail on the head with what I wanted to achieve, I hate point blank aftermarket grill's so was aiming for one that was improved over the original unit but still looked like it was "meant to be".

Im not overly concerned about stone chips, a good few coats of decent laquer should prevent that.

I really hope that I wont end up having to buy new indicators as I cant see them being cheap from Volvo. Luckily I have two or three pairs so can experiment with various chemicals to try an achieve the best possible finish.

Indeed, and if your good original grille is really good you might be able to sell it ;)

Prevent, I'd say reduce as it's going to happen.. lol

Around £39.00 a piece when I bought mine, if you've got a collection all well and good. I am sure I've also got my originals somewhere that your welcome to, provided I can find them, if you can't make a good set up out of the ones you have although from memory I think the n/s one has a small section of the outer lip missing but is hardly noticeable once fitted.

After a very lazy period, partly due to lack of funds there has been little progress of late with the 850.

I did however trear her to an early christmas present and she now has a Tutbo-Tuner fitted. Its going to take a while to get the hang of it and I think a AFR guage is going to be needed but Im confident that its a piece of software that I can easily adapt with each mod as it arrives.

Had a play with the TT on the way home today from the Midlands meet and was really impressed so game on!

I have just never had the money, having just recieved some birthday cash I thought it be best spent on something useful like a Turbo-Tuner rather than unimportant things like food and clothing.

The Software seems easy to use, havnt really played with it much other than switching between maps, altering boost and putting the limiters on!

Also many thanks to James for kindly donating me a boost guage. It looks well and is all wired up now. Im not usually a fan of the boost guages however it has become neccessary to tune with the TT.

It responded as I expected, I have nearly completed a stage 0 and only the vacuum lines left to replace.

Definately need more auto's mate, couldnt agree more. I have decided to aim for fastest auto on VPCUK. So far I believe we have Andy at 14.4 so thats my target.

I have a few hardware changes to make prior to putting a map on but fingers crossed it will make good. stable power.

That was sort of the idea behind the insanity. It will also be a learning curve.

Ultimately ill end up having it professionally mapped once I have the "right" turbo fitted.

I have been kindly donated a map by JT for the TT which was custom tuned and configured for a 3" DP, air filter, 16T and whites. Running 1.4 bar at peak boost in the higher gears. It achieved him 291bhp on the Dyno so will be interesting to see how it performs on my car.

Ive not decided which turbo ill go with ultimately, probably some sort of hybrid maximised for mid range power.

However Im going to work with what I have got for now, essentially I now have ready to be fitted a 16T and a fully custom tuned map to a car of near identical specification.

I think its worth seeing how it fares up.

That's great news you've managed to grab yourself a TT Emlyn...

I have to confess I was apprehensive when I got my TT because it was one of the first in the UK, you can tell alot more have been sold by the number on your ECU, and little was known about them on the UK forums. I have to say the transformation that custom mapping has made to mine is worth every bit of cash and worry I had at the time. Yours should really be a flying machine with the mods it will be interesting to see how things progress.
Be careful with the manual map on your auto as gearchanges on an auto are done under WOT circumstances and you WILL suffer with boost spikes and potential rod issues if your not careful especially when running 1.4 bar in the higher gears.

Best of luck with the fastest auto feat. I have to confess a 1/4 of 14 seconds and a 100 mph terminal shouldn't be an issue with the right tune/mods especially if you do a brake start/torque start. I managed over a 100 when I did mine without brake starting, I doubt you'll be seeing mine on the 1/4 mile again so you shouldn't have any competition. 2012 you will automatically be fastest, although you'll have Ed's T5 which puts up a fair fight with very similar mods to your current ones ;)

Thanks for the advice Andy, always appreciate some input from someone who has experienced the products potetial.

To be honest Im not building a car for the 1/4 mile but nethertheless being a little competitive and enjoying the "spirit" at the events those are the times I would like to aim for by the end of 2012.

Im not sure ill stick with the 16T and with probably go down the hybrid route. That said however the 16T on your brothers auto propells the car down the road very well.

Well MOT sorted £180 out of pocket but its had the CV boot, bottom arm and new handbrake shoes. That includes the MPT price too.

Now next issue...

Been up to Woody's today to try and sort an issue. Basically the car wont boost above 1 bar. I suspected it was the vac lines so all of those have been replaced now.

Not sure what it could be, actuator seems ok and the boost is consistent so thats pretty much ruled out the BCS.

Perhaps one of the IC pipes has a small crack? Time to go vacuum leak hunting on Boxing day.

Time for a little update. Not really been up to much with the car with the christmas festivities and work shortly thereafter so the boost issue is still not resolved.

On the list to do before the new year is the following:
-Fit 302mm Conversion
-Bleed brakes
-Fit White injectors and 16T
-Fit Reverse intercooler kit.

Today however with little to do a work I decided a little housekeeping was in order, a bloody good wash, polish and hoover. Believe me it needed it. After one coat of Auto Glym Super resin polish you could tell the difference.

Right well more work completed and off the list.

Another trip north to see my good friend Woody T5 and we have completed yet some more work to the car.

Firstly the hardest, fitted a set of Koni Yellows with 40mm lowering springs. The actual suspension change is a fairly easy job only but a few bolts per strut and dampner. Unfortunately however things got rather alot more complicated when the CV joint decided that it would separate from the hub. NIGHTMARE! Hub nut still tight on and of course with no leaverage as it wasnt attached to a shaft a nightmare to shift. Luckily however this was the same CV joint that had the gator replaced for the MOT only a week ago and the hub nut came free fairly easily.

After a few antics trying to remove the circlip with no plyers and insufficent tools we got the job done.

Lastly reverse intercooler pipework installed.

Here are some pics.

Volvo and Capri, the best combination! Thought it was time to start her up as its been sat for nearly three months garaged away.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/PC300211.jpg

So the verdict.

Well the suspension has improved the look of the car massively. It has dropped the front and back to a "near perfect" level and as a result the stance is much better. Other than cosmetics however even with the Koni's on the softest rebound setting the car feels much tighter and the improvement in handling far exceeds my expectations. Before it felt like a plate of Jelly and now like a plate of butter... firm but soft when needed.

The reverse intercooler pipework speaks for itself, spool up and pick up improved massively.

The car is now running and holding exactly 1.0 bar throughout the rev ranges. Having completed the change of all perishable hoses the only logical explanation for the boost cap at 1.0 bar is a "leaking" actuator. It does however hold a constant bar and feels healthy.

The next direction?

Well I have been doing some thinking of late, and next year I will recieve a large bonus.

Now I could be sensible and bank it or I could see it as money I "never had". Now I know its still a year away but with little else to look forward to as of yet in 2012/13 I have started having some ideas.

Basically a complete overhaul of the car!

As it stands the car has the following:

-White 350cc injectors
-TD04HL-15G
-3" Throttle Body
-Reverse Intercooler Pipework
-Custom Stainless
-Turbo Tuner ECU
-K&N Panel Filter
-Volvo Strut Brace
-Koni Yellow Adjustables

Now with the bonus that will be coming in ill have the money to add the following to that spec:

-Full Engine Rebuild
-Forged Con Rods
-Garret GT2871R (custom made by Owen Developments)
-630cc Siemens Injectors
-Eurosport 3" Intercooler
-S60 R Manifold
-Manual Conversion with short ratio M56L and Gripper/Quaiffe
-Big Brake Conversion (6 pot fronts)

The question is to I be sensible and put the cash away, maybe even buy a nice bike or S60R or do I go all out on the 850R and spend the lot???

T5frankie
Saturday 7th January 2012, 09:54

AndysR
Saturday 7th January 2012, 12:36
A few years ago I'd say spend it on the car but now I'd say bank the cash and forget about it. When we're old and wrinkly state pensions aren't going to exsist and any personal cash you have will be a nice addition to any private pensions you have. If you decide you'd rather invest the cash in the car you need to be 110% sure your happy to invest that amount in it and that you'll be happy to keep the car to get the benefit of cash before you sell it otherwise it will just be a waste of time not to mention cash...

Spend some of the cash (some not all) on a nice D5 with a good re-map on it, so you'll save a lot on all the driving that you do and then just carry on modding the 850 like you are now and get it in a good condition as possible, then just use it for meets, shows, etc.

Or just get an S60R.

Its one hell of a machine Andy, the engine work combined with the suspension and handling make it probably one of if not the fastest and best handling 850's I have been in. The only competitor would be Woody's and as I havent been out in his for a while I couldnt make a fair judgement. I would however say that they perform very similar to each other.

I have been in cars with Garrett's but i am happy with what mine dose!

Like I said with the spec it's all a real simple recipe That Tim Williams came up with and no big secret!

The Engine was totally stripped and rebuilt with new bearings and and valves, Block Chemically strengthened, OS1 pistons, China Rods, Light weight fly wheel, Larger Throttle Body, 470cc injectors, reverse piping & 75mm inter cooler, S60R Manifold, Ferrite 3" DP with Milltek Cat back, Setrab oil cooler & water injection using Methanol (good job you asked lol)

I think the real work and improvement comes from Tim Williams and the fact of how good he is at porting and polishing the head and flowing everything, including the Throttle Body right through the engine to match!

Suspension is Koni Yellows with Koni springs, Male end links, IPD ARB's front and rear, New front arms & polly bushed.

Other stuff S60R water pump, Porsche brakes & S60 r disks Pro race 1.2s

There you have it mate! If you are going to do a build I would recommend doing the Engine as above then it is ready for any turbo?

You have a nice Motor as well mate!

Again was really good to meet you as well!

Cheers Greg

Right, I have litterally just got in after finishing the car! What a night!

Jobs done today:
-Refit new CV joint
-Adjust Handbrake Shoes
-Fit 302mm conversion
-Decat the car (use a gutted existing cat for MOT purposes)
-Tweak Actuator

Now well nothing was simple, to start the heat shield wouldnt come off , when it did the actuator rod was rusted and couldnt be adjusted. After this the downpipe was cracked and then the exhaust despite only being on around twelve months refused to shift and had to be grinded off and re-clamped. Then when fitted the new Downpipe one of the bolts sheared off so it had to come off again and be re-threaded. Thankfully the 302 conversion did at least go on with ease.

So bruised knuckles later the jobs are done! Oh and she's now boosting and holding 1.2bar and appears to be quite a bit quicker :)

On the ramp... only just!

Where has the exhaust and CAT gone? Perhaps a de-CAT a little too extreme?

Nice Job Emlyn

1.2 bar will be a massive improvement especially if its holding it as well!!!
I did not realise you did not have 302's the other night? You will now feel like you have thrown an anchor out the window especially with DS2500's!!!!

Good Job! But get a full face shield next time especially when grinding like that! I have had a wheel come apart at work and luckily for me the safety officer was watching which was the only reason i was wearing one! worn one since lol

Yes its holding the boost well now and holds 1.2 bar, perhaps the CAT was blocked a little? It did however this afternoon spring the lambda light and go into a sort of "limp" mode... will need to be looke over sooner rather than later.

As for the brakes, Im supprised you couldnt tell! Then again however with your brakes you probably wouldnt. The DS2500's are off at the moment as the 302's were off my old car and are slightly oxidised so Im using a cheap set of mintex pads to wash the rubbish from the disc before fitting the DS's.

Yeah, really does go but butter... not enough though!!!

To be honest the exhaust only sounds marginally louder, its still very quiet inside, just a little louder at idle. Ill probably still change the system for a better one at some point.

Nice work Emlyn you have been busy.. Nice to see you've achieved more boost and managed to improve the braking after all this time. It's amazing how much of a difference in the look of the discs there is between the 280's and 302's..!
Be good to feel the difference in the performance of the car at the next Essex meet if you can make it :)

Next on the list is to take off the polish you applied ;)

Tbh, i dont use a Machine just a good compound, only machine if it's really nesscery, Hadnt had a car thats that bad yet, your's is far from it.

I would use such by hand, followed by a Good Polish, then a Sellant and a Wax on top.

I honestly Only washed mine for the last meet and it only had a polish 2 wks before.

Well up for a Cleaning session.

I agree, indoors is best if possible. Im affraid my garage is out of bounds and is currently looking like Argos for Volvo spares. Besides that it would mean you two would need to head up here as opposed to just me heading south.

If you can decide on a day thats good for you two and let me know the price, Im 95% certain I will be able to get the time off.

Well a little update is in order.

Basically I needed to change all four tyres on the Volans, I had pretty much bought a set of Yokohama Parada spec 2's when I remembered a little birdie had a set of wheels.

Basically the Yokohamas were going to cost me £500 (215/40/17) as I needed 5 (one for spare too). Woody T5 had his mint Tritons for sale with brand new Hankook Ventus V12 K110 Evos fitted (225/40/18), what the hell for an extra £200 Ill have a mint set of Tritons I thought.

As a result I now have a set of tritons, ten Volans, five perfo's and two columbas sat in the garage!

Ill be keeping the mint set of recently refurbsihed Volans as a second set and getting rid of the rest.

Well to say I am pleased with them would be an understatement. They look fantastic! Coupled with the tyres and suspension set-up the grip and handling even in the wet is sublime. Suprisingly too due to the build of the Tritons the 225's dont rub either.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P1180291.jpg

Nearly forgot, also fitted a BSR Cat back so now running a decatted system with a BSR. The exhaust is a 2.5" system and I believe bar the silencers which are stainless the rest is mild steel. It does however sound really nice.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P1180292.jpg

For the first time in a while I can say I am pleased with the way the car is going. Cosmetically bar maybe some window tints the car is finished (oh and a bloody good detailing session!).

Whats next?

Well I have a 16T to fit along with some white injectors for the time being however, firstly the 16T is going to be ported and polished. Im also going to port and polish the inlet and exhaust manifold for better flow and fit the 3" throttle body.

After this, well slow time will be get the manual conversion done.

So what will it look like performance wise?

Well the end engine spec by mid this year will be as follows:

-TD04-16T Ported and Polished
-White 350cc Injectors
-Ported and Polished Inlet Manifold
-Ported Exhaust Manifold
-Decat
-BSR Cat back exhaust
-Custom Reverse Intercooler Pipework
-3" Throttle Body
-13 Row Mocal Oil Cooler
-Turbo Tuner ECU Custom Mapped
-K&N Panel Filter
(Hopefully Manual Converted)

I would like to achieve between 280 and 290 flywheel horsepower and this spec. Will just have to wait and see.

Oh and I found the culprit of by boosting issues! (No its not that the downpipe is not connected!) ;)

They are a fantastic set of wheels just not sure they "work" on the car, I think I'll reserve judgement until I see the car in the flesh however ;) Great news your happy with the car, it's certainly a good feeling when that happens :)

So what were the boosting issues? Collapsed cat or dead turbo/cracked housing?

26 January 2012:

A little update here then.

Last week I decided that despite all advice not to that I would wash down the engine bay, well as you can guess it went horribly wrong. After around 20 miles the car started limping and juddering to the point where I thought it wuld cut out. I did however limp home.

I suspected immediately that it would be an electrical issue and more likely an ignition problem. So firstly I began with a new ignition coil pack, then a new dizzy cap and rotor arm and then a set of spark plugs (which Im glad I did, refer to later) and the car still wasnt running right.

I thought it couldnt possibly be the HT leads as they are completely sealed off, however it turned out to be just that.

So a new set of Leads, coil pack, dizzy cap, rotor arm and sparks and she is purring like a kitten again.

Now, going back to the spark plugs which fitted at the time were NGK Platinum PFR7B's... upon removing (they had only covered 3000 miles) I discovered this:

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P1260313.jpg

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P1260314.jpg

It would appear that for however long the car has been running lean. Whether or not the limp home firing on probably only two cylinders attributed to this I am not sure however to be on the safe side a new fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator and set of spark plugs were installed. Oh and just to make doubly sure there was enough fuel the whites were thrown in too.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P1220302.jpg

Now considering I was only running 1.1 bar which is little over the pressure as standard with a Rica 304 or similar I can only assume somewhere something was at fault.

Once the 16T is on then it will be down for a custom map with the Turbo-Tuner I think to ensure the AFR's are spot on.

Just bought a wideband afr gauge to monitor such problems, maybe check for leaks somewhere?

She has had a full stage 0 and all hoses and VAC lines replaced. I am aware of only one leak which is in the turbo exhaust housing which is being replaced next week. Bar that I'm 99% certain there are no other leaks.

Glad you managed to sort it out Emyln!
Have you had your injectors Cleaned & Balanced?

As when mine was an auto and on oranges I always used to get one plug which looked like that! Can't remember which one?
But after getting them Ultrasonically cleaned By Jimathen on VOC & T5D5 who dose and excellent turn around service by the way!

They where always alright after that!

Cheers Greg

Ok the car has been inspected again since the fuel rail, regulator and injector change and I am pleased to report all has gone well and the spark plugs look very healthy indeed.

Today I visited Page & Bird Tyres in Kings Lynn to have my four new boots fitted. These were fitted intime for WD40 and Cadwell but unfortunately as I wont have the replacement turbo in time to fit it I wont be tracking the car... I suppose the only positive is there will be no tyre abuse for the time being!

So time to change the rather tired Federal 595 Evo's (215/45/17) for some brand spanking Yokohama Parada Spec 2's (215/40/17) after reccommendation and a demonstration from AndysR and JimS70R.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P1300341.jpg

The fitting centre was excellent and even managed to line the red dots with the tyre valves!

So first impressions? Well on a slightly moist day on the journey home I gave the car a little tickle to see how they compared.

On a slightly damp surface traction was excellent, I didnt push the car just enjoyed the corners and found alot of confidence and trust for the tyres.

I am looking forward to a bone dry day where the Yoko's should really excell.

However from what I can tell so far I would certainly reccommend them and at £365 for four fully fitted a bargain too.

Will do Martin, they are very sticky indeed. Seem to pick up all the little stones, they are a soft compound with reinforced sidewalls.

To be honest probably the closest I want to get to road legal track tyres. I looked at the more advanced Yokohama AD048's and Toyo R888's at around £140 a corner which I dont mind but I need some traction in the rain!

Yes back on the Volans, I decided that I wasnt 100% with the Trittons on.

After much "uming" and "arrring" I decided I preffer the originality of the Volans.

Its missing some little yellow prancing moose stickers above the side repeaters.

I agree, to be honest all Volvo's are moneypits... well mine are at least.

I agree too that the V70R looks better but typically demands twice the premium.

By mid next year I think ill have one though, wouldnt sell the 850R though that can go into permanent hibernation for a few years till they are so rare and demand a 10k premium. lol .... dream, dream, dream!

Definately prefer the 850 and 70 series as saloons but prefer the earlier and later cars as estates.. I've never been fond of the S60 rear end.. Although an S60 R with a modified carbon fibre boot lid and?
