The clock spring behind my airbag is broken, has been since i got it.

If i replace it will i have to go to main dealers to get it reset or will it reset itself.

Dont really want to have to go to main dealer as the nearest dealer is a 2hour round trip and a robbing git.

The SRS or air bag light will not reset itself once a problem is detected. It does need to be manually reset.
On some 850's this is something you can do yourself at the under hood self diagnostic panel.
Do you have one on yours? It is right next to the washer fluid reservoir fill tube.

Download the service manual:

http://www.2shared.com/file/12210882/52a3a1e5/Volvo_850.html

Once it's downloaded open it up and you'll get a page of PDF sections of the factory service info.

Open the one for "Air bag restraint system"

A little more than half way down it will have a section "self_diagnostic system"

This will show you how that panel works to read and reset the SRS light.
