I am spoken to two companies one tells me that one from a early V70 will not fit a late 850, one tells me it will Btw these are salvage type bussiness both dealing with Volvo's !!!
can any one put me right on this please ;-)

Depends if the towbar application from saloon to estate differs as the V70 would be an estate and yours is a saloon. I can't see why they would differ in the way they fix to the car but the revisions to the bumper between the models may affect fitting and I suppose there is a chance Volvo could have modified the rear of the 70 series cars which could affect towbar fitment due to revised mounting points. Best way to check is to double check part numbers for towbars with a towbar specialist. If the numbers differ then chances are they may not be interchangeable.

Just be careful when purchasing a second hand tow bar, as i did this a while ago when i got my first 850 and my best mate said his dad still had the tow bar left from when they had one. so i handed him some cash and headed off to install my bargain bar, i jacked up the car and looked underneath to see whether there were any existing bolts or what i would need to get. No bolts, so i phoned the bars maker (whitter, very helpful) to see about ordering the suitable bolts, only to discover i would also require a set of spreader plates to go in the chassis box sections and the rear bumper would have to come off to install the plates... so as i found out my cheap tow bar was nearly as expensive as a new one, by the time i bought the fittings to fit it correctly as these bars need to be.

good luck....p.s tow bars are also now tested as part of your mot test...
