Ok guys, having never fitted an induction kit or performance filter to a turbo engine, please excuse my ignorance ;)
I have just fitted a Powerflow cone filter, I was immediately impressed with it. The way the engine roars under boost is stunning... BUT I can hear, what I can only presume to be the recirc valve dumping into the inlet, which I know it is supposed to do but it's loud and it does it whenever I let - off the throttle after 3000rpm. there is a noticeable improvement in bottom - end grunt so I don't think there's a problem but if the recirc is being forced open due to a weak spring, and has been since I got the car then any improvement in performance would be noticeable?
So before I fill the text window with waffle, can anybody tell me...
a; should I hear the recirc?
b; when should I hear it
and...
c; should I stop worrying about it and enjoy the noise (cos the "BBBBWWWAAAARRRR -- SSSHHUUUUS" noise is effin brilliant!)
Thanks in advance :)

Martin

Its a great noise and can give people a shock when they hear it and turn round to see that its a volvo making the noise!

I do miss the noise a cone gives you, just running a panel filter at the min and you can only hear it a bit.

Mrs MRP thought I was daft cos I was giggling like a little girl, faffing around in second gear - BWWWAAAARR SHHHUUS, BWWWWAAAAAAAAAAARRR SHHHUUUS BWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR SHHHHHUUUUUUS - titter titter! :)
If only I could post a pic of my smile at the moment... (would put decent people off their dinner!)

Still a little worried guys, I've been suspicious of a boost problem for a while, not getting the kick in the back experience that I used to. Now I am able to hear the recirc, I'm 99% sure that I can hear it letting-by as the turbo spools up. Should I be looking for knackered hoses or is it gonna be the recirc valve itself?
Any ideas gratefully received...
Martin.

Panel filter in drilled air box will give the same noise as I removed my cone and re-fitted the drilled air box with K&N panel and sounds the same.

i got talking to a guy who races and he told me to remove all the fins inside the airbox and smooth it out to improve air flow and increase noise as thats what the fins are there for so i got to work with my dremel and 2 hours later job was done and it does sound louder without the heat soak i used an itg pannel i also removed the 2 maf plastic grills which is meant to improve flow aswell this little mod works just hope i dont suck up a nice liitle stone and kill the turbo .

Ok, Due to checking the hoses (which aren't great) and various bits around the turbo, I have got myself another recirc valve which Is in pukka condition (thanks Antz) and the spring feels stronger under vacuum than the one that's on the car (I didn't take my one off the turbo, just put a tube on it and made it activate) So, this weekend while I am flushing the tranny, I gonna have my recirc off and see what it looks like and put the new one on anyway. Will keep yall posted and bung a few more pics in too.

Replacement recirc (thanks Antz) after a good clean

Cheers bud, I just about got away with the cone filter, although the missus says it sounds "broken" under boost so I think a blanking plate may be out of the question... although, If i chuck a stronger spring in there, get it just right, it should chatter then woosh... hmmm.;)

I've got to sort me radio code out as the missus ant bin in it yet since the rip kit and now hlm ecu and blanking plate sat so if I get that sorted just turn it up so she can't hear it lol

Firstly, let me explain my logic behind this.
I did my back in BAD on friday, the hospital gave me diazipan, codine 30mg, naproxin 500mg and paracetamol 500mg all of which are just about making life bearable at the mo. I had planned to flush the tranny today but that was out of the question for obvious reasons. BUT... since changing the recirc valve involved lying under the sweed, mostly, I thought "how hard could it be?" Bad move. First 2 bolts came out relatively easy but then...
Just have a look at the right hand bolt (just visible poking out behind the turbo) , then look at the clearance between it and the heatshield and now imagine trying to remove it with my fat, banana like fingers...
http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/DSCF6906.jpg
20 Mins dropping a 10mm spanner on my face, shuffling about, swearing and only getting a few degrees of turn at a time and it's off. YAY! had a look at the old recirc and to be honest, it looked newer than the one I was gonna put in. However, it didn't hold vacuum and the spring was about 400g weaker than the replacement.
Old one...

Replacement..
http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/Photo0036.jpg
So, how do you locate a bolt in a hole when there's only enough room to get one finger in (oooh errr!) F**K Knows how I did it but it went in. then the whole thing went as well as it did removing the old one (pain, swearing, fidgeting, spanner to the teeth etc.).
Another shot, from above this time (note the sausage finger pointing in anger at the new recirc!)
http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g413/martinrpeachey/DSCF6905.jpg
So, was it worth it? well, the jury's still out on that one. SLIGHTLY better boost, SLIGHTLY louder recirc dump noise. Still suspicious of boost problems.
Now the PCV badly needs doing too! eerrrggh!
Rant over. thanks for sitting through it!
