View Full Version : Back in the fold TFM´s S70 T5

The Flying Moose
Saturday 10th September 2011, 18:47
Well chaps, back in the fold. Just purchased a S70 T5 on ebay with 80K on the clock for 450, was originally up for 600.

I think I have got a real bargain for 450 quid! Especially 6 months rent and such low mileage.

Out the country till Monday morning so will be picking it up at the weekend.

Looking forward to it :)

Unfortunately the rear seats are different. Yeah its got the cloth interior, its pretty basic to be honest however for the price and mileage it really doesnt bother me. I have always liked white cars and with a little tlc and the odd bit of work here and there it could be a minter... at 79k possibly the lowest mileage S70 T5 on VPC???

You know what that needs on the front, some crystal headlights

All in due course my friend, lets get it home first!!!

Well done son and cheap to looks like will be chasing them times again ;-)

Yep, I knew I would find something before October Avon, although it wont be running half as well as the 850.

If I remember correctly it should currently be a straight flange 16T with Blues, 302´s and as its R reg pre ME7. It therefore ticks all the boxes. Bolt the 18T on get a MBC, get it mapped and away we go.

Imo the best looking sweed, and a bargain too.

Cheers mate, Worth more in parts for sure so either way if its a dog its cost nothing.

The only downer is a 700 mile round trip to collect it!!! Its probably going to owe me around 600 by the time I get it home... however as mensioned still a bargain.

I might have to cover it in BTC stickers, hang on.... wait a minute, perhaps had a few too many glasses of port, wine and beer tonight. Last day on holiday before returning to normality via Ryanair :(

Do u think thats genuine miles, really low and ex police

I have been provided the V5C no and the MOT certificate number. It all checks out according to the DVLA´s electronic MOT register so I have no reason to think otherwise.

It has all history from the previous constabularly too so will make interesting reading.

All things aside however, even if it were 180k its still a very cheap car.

Not a bad idea there! First things first will be to get it home and fix all the little niggles which if true to his listing shouldnt cost too much at all.

Could possibly put the Volans on that are sat in the garage? It certainly has potential and assuming the mileage to be true then it should last a good while.

I have seen ex cop V70 T5´s with low mileage, many will have been involved in accidents and left for repair for quite some time hence the mileage, none of course are recorded as ever had an accident although anyone with sense realises they will have had the odd prang during a tactical maneoveour.

Looking over some more history the car appeared back in 2008 with 69k on and was commented on VOC, at least then the mileage between 2008 and 2009 of 10k car be justified.

I think its definately ex police although an SE spec ex fuzz? Its a merseyside registration and I discovered that Northumbria Police had a traffic S70 with almost identical reg.

This one is R822JFT and Police R826JFT!

Maybe if I spelt it Polce instead of Police I would get away with it... if it were a show car just for qaurter miles etc I probably would for a laugh! I know Steve on another forum has an 850 with the blue and yellow checkers and has been pulled over many a time but as they are not reflective they are legal.

Looks like youve got youreself a genuine car anyways mate. Always nice when you can trace all the history.

I hope so mate, I am certainly going to try track all the history.

A few year old post linked to an autotrader link for the car some years ago had the car is pristine condition inside and out and there were no signs of holes anywhere, perhaps an unmarked white car?

Could well have been an unmarked white one either that or somebodys spent the time restoring it to factory condition.
Theyre using all sorts of unmarked ones round cumbria at the min. Got a good range of colours in V50's and V70's. Theyre getting sneaky. Theyre all out to get me. Lol.

Cheers for that mate, I was unsure whether they were whites or blues fitted. I know it will be a 16T for certain which is an excellent start I guess.

Assuming it is ex police there may well be 302's already fitted, if not I still have the discs and carriers for the 302 conversion in the garage. As Liams R reg S70R is straight flange I assume a T5 of the same era will be too.

If it looks half as good as your brothers when Im done ill be very happy. Although if I can achieve a look similar to that of the car above ill be very happy indeed.

Well after much google-ing, I'm inclined to believe that the car may not have been plod. I was registered in newcastle but there's no plod related info. I keep coming up with photos of the plod car pictured above but not yours. The car did appear on a few forums a while ago and similar questions were asked but the general opinion was non-plod. It may be worth emailing newcastle plod to see if they have any info. If the car was plod, they will have records.
Alternatively, check in the front grille for stealth brackets for the strobes (they don't take those out) and give the roof a good look over for signs of a respray - especially around the window rubbers.
I'll keep looking tomorrow. ;)

An easy spot is to look at the speedo for a calibration sticker. All plod P1 S/V70s had this sticker. The later P2 V70/S60 didnt have this sticker as the speedos came calibrated from the factory as part of the "police preparation" package.

They could but I suspect there would be tell tale signs of a sticker being there, maybe a discolouration where its been or remnants of glue. I left mine on when I had my P1 V70 ex plod.

Well got it back without hitch, the car mechanically is sound. Its very nice actually as it feels tight so leads me to believe the mileage is genuine.

The interior is a little tatty to say the least and the body work could do with a tidy... nothing I cant deal with however. Will probably end up re-spraying the whole car white again in the future as it should be easy and cheap on a white car.

Was at smithness's last night and alreasy taken the Perfo's off and fitted the Volans. At first I though there is no way the Volans would suit but supprisingly they do. Also fitted the front leather seats from my 855 back still cloth but fronts were in terrible condition.

It is definately ex Police and has holes in a few places. Going to go to my local scrappy today and remove a new dash and centre console... possibly door cards if available.

Will post up some pictures later.

Good to hear all is well. Holes in interesting places... center console? Wondering if it was unmarked or CID or something like that? would explain the lack of pictures available. Still, it may be worth getting hold of Newcastle plod for info. Masterofmadness did it with his and got sent a folder full of info. Thinking about doing that myself but to be honest, I know what I needed to know about the car and the rest will probably confuse me! :cop:

Definately ex plod mate. It has filled holes in the roof for light bar, multiple holes in the dash, holes in the rear roof internally where strobes must have been fitted and four holes in the boot floor which I assume was for a gun rack.

I believe it was ex armed responce for sure, gut feeling.

Impressed by another feature, not sure if on all S70's but the boot release button on key fob and in car works... when pressed the whole boot launches up and fully opens... easy access to weapons perhaps? I was sure they normally just pop up slightly to unlock?

Yeah thats ok mate, just need a live direct from battery and an earth. It has been done before on my 850 T5 when I fitted the R interior so should be an easy hurdle.

Thanks again mate.

Well I wish the first ever photo's of the car were taken under different circumstances but unfortunately not.

The Flying Moose Plus Volvo Spells back luck it seems.

Nipped over to LiamT4's this afternoon to collect a set of headlights as the fronts on mine were so far gone that the main beam were as bright as normal side lights.

Anyhow we got these fitted, wow what a difference... even if these were apparently poor on Liams S70R.

Here is a Photo of Liam getting familiar with a socket and wratchet!

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P9190336.jpg

Now unfortunately its all down hill from here.

After fitting the lights we decided to give the mapped ECU from his S70R a go in my S70 to determine if mine were mapped.

Well it went so well that infact the bonnet decided the best thing it could do would be to launch itself onto the windscreen at 20-30mph.

Result is bent bonnet and bust bonnet catches. Luckily the windscreen and roof had no damage neither did the wings. Next dilema, bent bonnet and brackets, no tools and 80 miles from home... AA it is! Time to re-coup some more money. An hour or so later a secured bonnet for the journey home.

I can grab it for you if you want, but I'm guessing you're gonna want to have a rummage round if you make it down.
They charge £1.25 entry (insurance) and charge for tool hire so you'll need kit. We can take my car to collect bits if you want, haven't got a garage or driveway but there's always room outside the house for tinkering.

My thoughts exactly, this one is in Birmingham which is over a hundred miles closer each leg. I also need to visit Birmingham so two birds with one stone.

I appreciate your help though, if this one goes ill be heading south!

bloody hell your not having much luck at all are you how did the bonnet manage to let go was it a mechanical fault.

Nope not in the slightest mate.

My professional sounding diagnosis on the bonnet leads to the following conclusion:

Bonnet catches insufficiently or inadequately greased/lubricated at service. As a result catches failed to operate within the designed parameters and were "permanantly" siezed open, thus meaning no grip on the bonnet. The centre catch designed to be the secondary fail-safe was also found to be in the locked open position.

forgot to mention springs arrived yesterday thanks emlyn,,

Brilliant, I forgot to mension I posted them! Came to £25 just to post the buggers in the end!

Its definately due to poor maintainance mate. These catches MUST be regularly inspected.

The Flying Mooses Tip of the day:

Go out and poor every grease and oil compound sat in your garage onto your bonnet release catches.

They used to be rubbish, but they did originally have crap bulbs and the glass was really bad (nowt like the ones that were on yours though!).
After i had some decent bulbs put in and used some scratch remover (or something like that) on the glass to really get the dirt off they weren't so bad, but compared to the new ones they were a long way off.

I weren't joking about duane either, but don't think my neighbors would have been amused.

I quite simply have had enough of bloody Volvo's and maintaining them.

Not heard from him for a few days, is it going that bad? lol

Its been pretty bad mate, sorry I havnt been online for nearly a week, money problems, depression and illness.

His 18t is back on ebay...

Indeed it is mate, need the cash. I have decided I'm happy with the 16T and need to be more sensible with money.

Well here is an update.

Wheel bolts as mensioned... problematic.

I was going to start a comprehensive service on the car Wednesday and decided to start with flushing the brakes and replacing the pads, this of course involved slackening the wheel bolts prior to lifting the car.

That is as far as I got after three of the bolts snapped.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P92403511024x768.jpg

Which in turn ended up with me drilling and extracting the bolts this afternoon after recovering a little from illness.

Not a massive amount to report on this week, the car was given a full service, all ignition parts replaced, sparks, oil, filters and the gearbox was drained and re-filled with fresh fluid.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/P9280379.jpg

Also started playing and trying to find the boost issues, I replaced nigh on all VAC lines and found one that wasnt connected. Reconnected everything set off and found it still wasnt boosting right.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/PA040384.jpg

Upon further inspection and hitting the CAT it seems the CAT may be blocked or broken up as it rattles badly when you hit it (also explains rattle at idle).

After this found a shot top mount and replaced that too.

She is slowly getting there :)

Ill check on Vadis for you now mate, find the exact Volvo specification.

The official part number from Volvo for the M56LK oil is 1161745 (1 Litre Container) you need 2.1 Litres.

The part number for the M56H and M56L is also the same so I assume that 75w90 as in my box will be fine, smithness has run it in his before and I too in another box.

I have been trying to sort a few niggling leaks from the heater matrix and the steering rack which have been the bain of my life but nearly there now.

Stage one nearly complete, last mechanical issue to resolve is the cat. I think im going to cut it out bare it out and re weld it on so as at MOT time next year it appears a CAT is still in place.

These arrived in the post today though... :)

Cheers Andy, originally I wanted to make it like an S70R. The only issue is however the bodywork and paintwork leaves alot to be desired. The only viable thing to do was to cover it as it needed a complete blast down and re-spray.

Hopefully it will look unique and turn a few heads at the Volvo meets.

My intention is to allow anyone who wishes to do so drive it.

Well finally got some decent work done today with the kind help of a friend.

Also now got unlimited access to a four poster lift :)

So, sorted a few leaks today first.

As you know the car wasnt running well at all and was producing little or no boost and rattling uncontrollably. Next on the list then was to locate the source of the rattle, this was found to be a heat shield... now gone. Finally the downpipe and CAT were removed and cut open with the grinder to remove the contents, the CAT had very much collapsed. Once everything was removed from its internals the CAT was then re-welded and re-fitted.

As a result of todays work the car is now running almost A1. Just the brakes to sort and mechanically its pretty much there.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/IMG00019-20111106-19.jpg

The insides of the CAT exactly as it was!!! All crumbled out.

http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k549/EMLYNT5/IMG00020-20111106-19.jpg

Re-welded and ready to re-fit. The reason? Well with the new MOT regulations a CAT must be in place if fitted on the factory line, is one fitted? YES ;)
