It looks as if the head gasket has gone on my old 855 2.0 10 valve, considering the cost of parts to repair, If I could obtain a replacement lump including gearbox could I fit a different engine i.e. 2litre 20 valve or 2.4 non turbo along with the correct ecu?

If you can't do the head gasket yourself not much chance of fitting a bigger engine?
If i were you i'd be on the lookout for a cheap t5 can pick autos up for around £500 and couple of hundred more for a manual. Cheaper in the long run.

£229 + postage + fitting makes this look dirt cheap,

shame it's an auto, i'd love another estate.

The question was, can a different engine be fitted, is the wiring the same for sensors etc

fit a 850 2.5 20v and ecu and the injectors witch you should be able to get at the same time mate i had a 2.0 20v and blew the engine so fitted a 2.5 20v on the 2.0 20v box now that car was quick mate and better on fuel too.and everything is straight swop too.
