View Full Version : My First 850

Having helped JT build his 850 to go racing in (after initially questioning his decision to buy and old mans car :saythat:) I've come to really like them, and so decided I wanted one of my own. So after keeping an eye on eBay, this weekend I went out and bought my very own Volvo 850 T5 :)

Welcome to the club :) think you've got to be one of the youngest t5 owners in the country. What you got planned for it?

Well I already have an R bumper to go on it...

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/johnnytempest/IMG_0284.jpg

A set of Titans and maybe lower it a bit too. I think that's pretty much it for the outside

As for the inside before anything else I need to get rid of the tape player!! lol

They're the first things I want to do, but I'm sure I'll think of plenty more later on

Nice one, great stuff.
That's one nice looking car you've got yourself, and with the suggested wheels and fitting the R front bumper it will look brilliant. Think you should try and source yourself an R saloon boot spoiler to finish the look off ;)

:) Thanks, will look even better soon hopefully. Lucked out that weekend really, perfect colour, manual, cleanest car I've ever seen and the R bumper is already the right colour for the car so no need to get it sprayed.

Sorted the insurance last night, just need to get it taxed and away I go :B_steerin

Im not even sure what luck is anymore... spend three years looking for a mint T5-R saloon find one.... well you know the rest, get my old car back and have nothing but problems.

Its no cheap thing Volvo ownership but it adds character, I have no idea how those who cannot repair them themselves manage however!

Both very nice cars indeed...

I paid a bag of sand for my last T5-R but im doubtful ill manage to do the same again.

I wouldnt mind buying one with a bust engine and building one up over time now I have some temporary wheels, why break the grey estate you may say then? Well I was never really happy with it, it would never have been an R and having been a member of that exclusive club its hard to explain the appeal until you have... jamest5r will understand ;)

Excellent! Yes I did just send a text.

Seriously though if you do want help after work friday or whenever just ask, we'll have it working... I bet you!

Electrics are my thing JT, I have always been good with the stuff that goes bang in the wet.

You make it sound hard? Its only a series of coloured wires and im Colourblind! Anyone with a multi-meter and a basic understanding of ohms law should be able to wire anything in series or parallel... these blooming electricians get away with charging a fortune, hence the need to learn.

Nothing against you personally Johnny, your a decent guy but why can electricians never quote you a price inclusive of VAT? lol

I strongly reccommend the H&R coil springs, I had the 30mm drop H&R's on my 854 and it sat perfectly and handled briliantly, smithness can vouch for this. They are now sat in the garage looking sorry for themselves.

Question time:

On the way home from work today I gave it a boot full up the slip road on to the dual carriageway (just for fun as I was the only one on it :)), but after a couple of seconds or so a light in the bottom left of the dash started flashing, I instinctively lifted off straight away so I don't know which one it was but looking at it there only seems to be bulb warning lights and the fuel warning light there.

Any ideas what it was or what might have caused it?

Monday 5th September 2011, 19:40
Hi mate

its Qady! supplied your JT afew bits for your car....and the new wheels...you will like!!

Regarding the light, is it still on? Im assuming there is enough fuel in the car right. Otherwise, if the light doesnt stay on, it might be worth having the codes read...if nothing present and its driving fine...i think you should be ok

Cheers

Oil is kind of low, but not below the minimum mark. More importantly the oil light is on the right hand side of the dash not the left

JT's Mechanic
Monday 5th September 2011, 21:11
On mine its on the right hand side, I switched the ignition on (so the dash lights up) and its definately on the right, bulbs fuel and washer fluid are on the left

JT
Monday 5th September 2011, 21:13
as Jim said maybe its just low on screen wash??

AndysR
Monday 5th September 2011, 21:16
Probably just low screenwash light, top the oil back up again and top up the screenwash with water and do the same tomorrow. All the important brake and engine ones are on the right, so it can only be the screenwash level light.

If I rev it to 6k its at about 65mph. The camera didn't pick the noise up very well, but its not really really loud anyway

If it's the Volvo boost - o - meter, then you won't go very high anyway (not very good the volvo ones)
Noise wise, I know what you mean, with a standard pipe, they're not supposed to be loud, they're an executive tourer after all. Mine's almost silent when cruising. It's when you open her up and get that lovely 5-pot roar that only a T-5 makes, coming up through the floor. Always makes me smile ;)

Well, I noticed oil on the driveway yesterday and sure enough when I looked underneath my car I could see the back end of the sub frame covered in it. Pulled the dip stick out and sure enough out came white smoke :(

So today I got the PTC out which wasn't necessarily blocked but was definatly full of crap so I cleaned that out and put it all back together.

I also changed the hoses from the turbo control valve thingy as they all looked pretty knackered and I already had half the stuff around it out of the car, and the air filter as that didn't look too clever either.

Anyway, took it out for a bit and came back and there's still smoke coming out of the dipstick so I definately need to do the PVC, which I kind of knew anyway as I found the plastic pipe that goes from the top of the oil catch tank thing round to the top of the PTC was snapped in the middle under the foam outer layer anyway.

If I keep driving this to and from work until I've done the PVC am I going to do a lot of damage or will it be alright for a few days?

Right, next question. Was on my way back from giving a lift when a rather noticeable knocking noise at the back developed over a bumpy bit of road. First instinct was the exhaust but when I got back I tried moving it around etc and it all seemed pretty solid.

Then I checked the nuts at the top and bottom of the suspension as me and john just changed it, one was loose which I tightened and went out again but that didnt stop the noise. The rest were all tight.

Can anyone think of anything else I need to check before I go to work tomorrow morning?

M-R-P
Friday 30th September 2011, 22:56
Did you check the threads on the one you tightened? it may be slipping. I fix machinery for a living and see this sort of thing a lot, you tighten something till you think it'll stay put then a jolt is enough to pop it. worth a look.

Lol, wouldn't even notice the corsa in the back of one of these no matter how much it rolled around lol. It seems as though the spring wasn't sitting properly at the bottom, so after john noticed that we moved it around a bit before tightening it and that seems to have solved it.

Not updated this for a while (had to go to page 8 to find this thread :smirk:)

But I robbed johns standard RIP kit today as he's redoing it with silicone hoses etc... and fitted an air filter of my own so he can have his back

Love the noise of the cone filter

The more I look at it the neater I feel the original intake piping seems. I still don't get the whole feels like a different car scenario but I would imagine a difference is noticeable in certain applications/conditions.

Still love the car btw ;)

Andy seriously, why dont you try the R,I,P on your's Buddy.

I promise you, YOU will feel the the turbo spool up much quicker and easier.

Try mine if you like, Just as a Comparison of course. Id never go back to normal piping have done and certainly didn't like it.

I could do, just need to be careful with the boosting characteristics of the turbo don't want to affect that too much. Plus which not having all these secondary mod's gives me an excuse to use when you acheive your 14.5 1/4 ;)

You could be right, Perhaps Your Bespoke mapping does a similar job to my Mechanical secondary Mods?

Adding the Rip may well cause a strainge effect to your Map, but surly it would go back to normal once it was removed?

I noticed for intance jut removing the cat increased boost pressure by 1 - 1.5psi.

This is the route i'm going down with the 18t v soon, Probably before she's rollin roaded Next wk

If I was to do a RIP kit I'd have the car remapped at the same time, but to make the most of it I'd have an aftermarket intercooler at the same time ;)

De-catting before the RR session.. Your just worried about your chances against Rotch aren't you... ;)

compare the 2 in the diagram, the RIP kit is alot straighter & believe 2foot shorter. You don't think thats going to help the air flow faster?
