Alright guys I need your input!

Ive got a spare 5cyl engine cover in my garage that I was thinking of using as a test pilot for some custom engine cover spraying for the 245.

Now....Ive already thought about carbon vinyl wrapping but the engine heat may cause it to melt or fall off, I cant shave the lettering off because its raised from behind and would leave holes.

So does anyone have any ideas?....otherwise I can see myself forking out £80 for a carbon fibre one which looks very tasty but very expensive!

Ideas on a post card to "i have an idea, antz house, uk"

What about painting the whole thing to match the car/engine bay then sanding the lettering to expose the black plastic underneath and lacquering.
? :)

I did think that but the cars white and white+oil makes a bad mix!

Provided you clean it properly there's no reason why paint won't stay adhered to it indefinatley, I've painted and airbrushed loads of engine covers and not had any problems..Check the link in my sig for examples

thanks mate! What do you recommend to clean it up? So far Ive just given it a good going over with some super strength industrial cleaner thats good for pretty much everything and seems rather good at breaking down grease and oil.

Give it a good sand down with some fine grade paper to give the paint something to "tack" too aswell. I have just been doing the very same thing to my covers. So far so good no paint flake.

Give it a wipe down with panel wipe, a scuff up with dome fine abrasive paper (as Emlyn pointed out) and you can also use something called 'Adhesion promoter', it helps the paint stick to the plastic.

Sounds to me then like getting the rattle can and sandpaper out is your best option.

I'd be interested in a custom cover TC - if you are still doing that kinda thing? It'll annoy the hell outa Hamish.

there's a cold-galv spray I got my hands on, zinc and aluminium heat resistant up to 800 degrees. I'm gonna have a go on my standard charge air pipe, wet 'n' dry it and buff it. Should look like a shiny metal pipe when it's done. Will post pics if it looks any good. :)

I was thinking on something mechanical - almost X-ray like peering down into the engine?
