HELP Engine System Service Required.

The other day I started getting the little engine symbol lit up in orange. Today I am getting the message "Engine System Service Required". To top it off I am heading for Devon on Friday night.

Can anyone recommend someone in the York area who can read the codes and fix the problem?
Only noticeable problems I have seen is that for a few months now the engine power delivery has been hesitant at times. Although it did improve on premium fuel. Could this be a throttle problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Need to sort it fast. I imagine it would be a bad idea to risk a 300 mile journey?

Yes it could be the ETM, but as you say you will only know when the fault codes are read.

Given that you are pushed for time, and don't know any local independent Volvo specialists, getting to a dealer for diagnostics *only* might be the way forward. That way they can plug the car in and give you a list of the fault codes, and then you can come back on here and work out how to fix them :)

If it is the ETM then you will need to fix it before going far. When it breaks for good the car becomes undriveable. There is a thread I wrote somewhere about ETM replacement and how to limit the costs.

Hopefully it might be something simpler, but the "hesitation" and year of your car does indeed make it sound like ETM is a possibility. Sorry.

Will look at your thread. I've just found the website for a specialist called Huttons in Slingsby might try them as they say they have VADIS. Not going to bother with Dyrdals in York as they couldnt do any diagnostics last time I saw them.

Huttons seemed very helpful and will read my codes this afternoon for £25. Watch this space.

there are very few garages i trust and hutton bros is one,the repairs etc are reasonable but the cars are very expensive!

nah its not the usual serviceinterval message.Had a full service in Feb.

The good news is it is just a sensor:
ECM-1600 Boost Pressure sensor. "Signal too low".
He didnt have one in stock unsurprisingly, but twenty miles since he reset it and so far no error messages or symbols have reappeared. So clearly an intermittent fault and not constant.
phew, what a relief. I can drive to Devon without worrying. Being 10 yrs old and nearly up to 159k I know a biggy is approaching, but glad it wasnt this time. Believe my ETM was done at 130k by the previous owner. How long do they last, and what do they cost to replace?

Boost pressure sensor uses vacuum and/or positive pressure to signal the ECM.

Dirty contact or corrosion in the plug could cause the low voltage signal, as could a perished vacuum hose. Loss of pressure in the hose would give a genuine low boost signal.

If your Magneti Marelli throttle body has been replaced with a Bosch unit then it is unlikely to need much more than a clean IMHO.

I wouldn't be too worried about the ten year biggie. TBH aside from routine wear and tear maintainance, not a lot goes awfully wrong in my experience - just watch your cambelt and don't get an AWD!

Turned out it was a faulty air flow sensor. My mate put in a new one for £86 quid and its now running sweet as a nut and I reckon it should be ok with 95 RON fuel again. Plus I am no longer getting any more warning lights since he cleared the system of errors.
